New Interface on Test Server

The new interface is now live on the test server. I've included some (huge) screenshots to show what it's like while doing various actions. A few notes about it:
  • To Enable the interface, you must manually add the line NewUI=TRUE to your eqclient.ini under the [defaults] section. This Case Sensitive. This must also be done AFTER patching, and closing the patcher.
  • Bazaar window (ALT+T) is active, but not finished apparantly.
  • To set up a window as a dedicated channel, you need to both assign input and output to the window. For example to do /ooc to a dedicated window: Right click on the main window, select new window. Then Right click on the new window and from the filters menu click on ooc. This will put the output of ooc to this window. To have anything you type without a modifier go to ooc in this window, you can assign it under the defaults menu.
  • If you can't move your windows, you might have locked them. use ALT+L to lock/unlock the window settings.
  • Some people were noticing performance issues when running at color depths less than 32bit.
  • The limit on the number of bags you can have open at a time seems to be gone. The Screen Shots.
  • Character Select
  • Duelling
  • Inspecting Items
  • More Inspecting

Think there's a memory leak related to the UI.
Spent a while playing around with it on test last night. Died several times - takes about 3 times as long for me to zone - and after something like 1 hour windows crashed me to desktop and gave me a low virtual memory warning....
    Skins
    # Jun 26 2002 at 6:01 PM Rating: Decent
What app would one use to design a skin? Any thoughts?

Edit: I think I answered my own question...

    From the EQ Developer's Corner

    * For those interested in developing custom skins for the interface:

You'll notice that there is now a directory called UIFiles beneath your EverQuest install directory.

The default skin (aka "The New UI") is stored in the directory called, predictably "default," and we've included a document called "AboutSIDL.doc" in the UIFiles directory.

If you make yourself a new skin, please create a separate directory for it in the UIFiles directory. Once the skin is in there, you can switch to it by typing "/loadskin <directory_name>"

Working with the skins at this point is not an activity for the faint of heart, but if you're inclined to hack around in those files, AboutSIDL will hopefully help out a bit.

That looks great! Wheee! No more open bag limit is great! That will make my pottery and brewing a ton easier.

And minimizing windows is a fantastic idea, more of a view of the world around me is great.

...now if I can just get Illia to give me her gear...164 STR on a chanter, thats wild.
    Cool

I went on the test server to check it out myself, and it looks durned cool. I especially like the totally pointless but nonetheless very cool explore feature in character select. I'll probably never use it, but hey its cool :-)

I did notice some serious slowdown when I had either the inventory or spellbook open... but that might have been 'cause I wasn't at 32-bit color depth, if I'm reading some other things right.

Hope it goes live soon, this new interface kicks the old ones ***

They are saying mid summer but it may be sooner. Who knows. I think it looks almost done. Only change I would like to see is to get rid of the split health bar when you have a pet out or change it. I love the fact that your pet has a real health bar now but the yellow is too overpowering against the red of your own health and you can open up a new window with your pet's health anyways wich I preffer to use since it's much easier to see a drop in.

    RE: release
    # Jul 02 2002 at 3:10 PM Rating: Decent
Not sure where you live, but in the US summer starts on June 21st, so the end of June could hardly be considered mid-summer. Maybe between the end of July/middle of August would make more sense.

BTW, summer ends on September 21st.

    When?
    # Jun 26 2002 at 12:00 PM Rating: Decent
Checked out the Test Server briefly before heading off to work this morning. It did seem to lag, but that could just have been my PC or bad time. It looks great and I really hope it is what we all want, the current UI being somewhat combersome. I am eager to see it go live. Do we have to wait for the expansion, or is it coming out sooner?
    RE: When?
    # Jun 27 2002 at 2:27 AM Rating: Default
Well, seeing as the New UI was supposed to be released with the Luclin expansion, they'd better release it as soon as they're done, and not with the next expansion... Personally, I think it was a huge upset when Luclin came out without the new UI. What good is a Bazaar if there's no coding to let people actually sell stuff in it?

    Just my 2cp...

    Hmmm, couple things about skins.

You can put any of the "Gauge"'s (Exp bar, hp bar, etc.) in any window, inventory slots too.

Buttons can't be moved from window to window, but can be resized and moved inside a window.

    This is looking awesome.

    1024x768

I hope 1024X768 is good enough.

I don't see why they would limit the use of it like that however.

    # Jun 26 2002 at 7:13 AM Rating: Decent
I also normally play in 1024x768. However, the new interface seemed very cluttered to me in this resolution and I ended up jumping to 1600x1200 before I was happy. This was fine in an empty EC, but I expect to have trouble in that resolution on Luclin.

Lucky you, I'm on an Athlon 1.2Ghz, 384mb ram... And anything higher than 800 x 600 really lags for me on Luclin. Come to think about it, even this really lags in some parts on Luclin... *sigh*

I need a new video card...

I have one quick question still lingering in my mind...
What happens when you want to read a book in game?
    (like 'basic blacksmithing' or something)
Do you still have to switch to HUD mode? or does it come up in a window or something?
I know in the current interface you can't read a book in FullScreen mode, I've tried.

Also, do you still switch to HUD mode when scribing/meming spells? (this is kinda the same question, but could have a different answer)

Also the spellbook is changed from 5 spells on 50 pages (250 spell slots) to 8 spells on 32 pages for a total of 256 spell slots. This will probably mean alot of rearranging once it goes live but that's a small price to pay for having 60% more spells per page available to you.

You can read books in full screen. Additionally, You have access to your spell book in full screen mode too. There is a new spell book and new spell icons for the new interface. No more HUD mode.

    One of my favorites:

No flipping the page animation on the new spell book.

This makes going from page to page SO much quicker. You're right, we will need to rearrange our spells... but at least this will definately speed up the process. :)

    not sure about spells.

    Exp Bar?
    # Jun 25 2002 at 6:53 PM Rating: Decent
I heard rumors that the Experience bar would be separable from the inventory screen. In this scenario you would then be able to see your exp bar on the same screen that you can see your hit points etc..

Is it still necessary to go to the inventory screen to see your experience?
    RE: Exp Bar?
    # Jun 25 2002 at 7:32 PM Rating: Default
It's not separable in the default skin.
However, it is possible to make new skins and stick anything anywhere you darn well please...including the exp bar in it's own window if you wanted.
    Interface/color question

I have a question that has bugged me for some time.

Depending on which windowing I'm using, some of the colors are unreadable. I know about changing the colors in the INI file, but my problem is that sometimes I use full windowing and sometimes not, and more often than not, one set works in one and not in the other, if you get my drift.

    /sigh

I would just like to figure out one set of video settings and ini settings that will work on both situations. Any help would be appreciated.

    # Jun 29 2002 at 8:05 AM Rating: Decent
you can change the ammount of fade all windows have in display, or you can right click each window and change its 'alpha' normal and fade levels.
Normal is the level of fade on the window when you're working in that particular window. Fade is what the window fades to when you're working on another window or not focused on any window.

The focus is driven by the mouse. You can move it around to watch different windows gain then lose focus as the mouse hovers over them.
    RE: Interface/color question
    # Jun 25 2002 at 7:37 PM Rating: Good
There's no long any reason to switch from full to non-full screen. All the clunkiness is pretty much gone (ie you don't go into non-full screen when looting, trading, etc any longer) with this new UI.

Illia, if you re-read his post, he wasn't talking about the colors being unreadable due to the fade, he's talking about being able to see the colors he chooses for his text in full screen *and* windowed mode (things like white and yellow show up great full screen but they're murder on the eyes in windowed on that parchment colored background)

    =)

I am curious about something else though...
All the icons (both for the spells in the spellbook and for those on the gems) are now available in various .tga files. Does this mean we can change them to whatever the heck we want for our spell icons? The .tga files are in the UI's individual folder, so my assumption is that *everything* there is editable, not just the text of the .xml files. Are they actually permitting the players that much freedom?

I just set mine to stop fading in and out when windows gain/loose focus.

I find if the background is solid that the text is always readable, and since I use alot of defaults for text colours, it should work for you.

Under Options, check the Display Tab, and then set the slider to "Fade to 100% Transparancy".
