For some reason I can't even log into playonline, I could earlier today but now I get a message about the server being busy or needing to check my network connection. Is this just me? Maybe the router I got the other day is being a *****.

You guys do know we wont have to download anything right? Their changing the server machines, which means. Faster game performance. Which means less lag for you, faster it can send data to you.

Now for 18 hours....its kinda amazing that their tearing apart an entire server room. Keep in mind that there are a couple of hundred server machines and thousands of wires; That need to all be set up, CORRECTLY. It's amazing that they are doing it this fast. a Massive upgrade of equipment like this, could take a week. Yet they are giving it to you in less than 24 hours.

Just seriously go outside, get something done. If its your only day off from work, It's summer! Goto the beach! If you have a girlfriend surprise her and spend the entire day with her...something yah prolly haven't done in a while ;)

But I do have to admitt. I love how during every update I cna pass the time by seeing lots of pople scream "Omgz Liek No FFXI omgwtf SE are F***tards!!! we are demand monies...I havez n0 L1fe lolomgwtf"

LMAO!!! I come here to read those too. I am a network engineer and I've been on the other side of the user/engineer coin. It really does take quite a while to make sure you can put Humpty Dumpty back together again. I love server upgrades. You get all the latest greatest and if it works, everyone wins. They also have to make sure that if anything goes wrong with the upgrade that they can go back to what they were using before.

I'm happy about this upgrade because I've been having frequent lag/disconnects that I didn't have when FFXI came out last year. I'm hoping this will solve those issues.

A note to the people who can't understand the importance of all of these updates, Imagine that you're still playing Colecovision and using a Tandy for your word processing...Get the picture?

I dont know if Square does this (probly do) but many Japanese companies have places for employees to sleep inhouse. This makes it possible for employees to be there 24hrs a day for several weeks, this is how they got passed the Industrial revolution. What this means is they can keep that server room hopin all day, its a feat to us because you dont often see employees dedicated enough to devote 18hrs to all this, and we cant take a nap after 6 hrs.

I guess it can also be easily overlooked, if they are actualy replacing the servers themselves, they have to still moove all the data, and even if the servers are fully operational the data swap is time consuming, then it has to be tested and verified for integrity before opening to the web. They have a nice fat window to pull this all off, and for the Japanese this is lots of time.
Its like giving a StarTrek engineer 2hrs to fix a 30min job, only we cant order it done in 15... (wink)

yes and your right but the last few updates and Maint. have had time consumed for paying customers totaling over a week last one some were offline 3 days or unable to log onto thier 24/7 service this alone 18 hours min. theres 4 1/2 days right there. you would put up with this incompetence from other 24/7 services?
RE: O_o
# Aug 09 2005 at 1:39 AM Rating: Decent
How do you call making something better incompetence? Since there are always new players, they have to add additional hardware to alot for them. This reduces the amount of connection/data issues for the rest of us. Imagine you are having an addition built to your house. There may be a room that is unusable for a while until the job is done. Sure you're inconvienced, but afterwards you have something superior to the original. Which is better?
RE: O_o
# Aug 09 2005 at 1:58 AM Rating: Decent
Thier inability to do it with thier users in mind. I'm not talking only of this hardware update, I'm talking in general of thier actions. Thier are much better ways to give software updates than they provide they just seem to refuse to try and look into them causing nothing but problems.

And any service that can not in a reasonable fashion provide the service thier suppose to is incompetent in my books and probably many others.

In the last 8 months 9 months since December thier service has been unavailabe for over a period of 3 weeks this is an average of one week per 3 months (Data being collected for PSC) you don't find that incompetent?

I really would like to sell you some property in the Florida swamp.
RE: O_o
# Aug 09 2005 at 2:28 AM Rating: Decent
I don't know how they could better deliver these updates to the thousands of POL customers. Sending an actual CD or DVD with the updates to all of their customers would be difficult and costly.

I've never had more than an additional 2 hours of downtime after an update and that's only on the last software update. Hopefully this server upgrade fixes that. You can't blame internet based companies because of a slow connection if you're not willing to buy a T3.

The only way that SOE could provide real 24/7 service is to buy additional servers/bandwidth that act as reduntants while they perform these action. They could also limit service availability during software updates to certain regions or bandwidths. But that requires a lot more time and money to us the consumer than is worth it. Plus since it's all one community, some people would have an unfair advantage. Imagine being the last to get an update and you find that some new cool item has already been collected by everyone else except the people in your category.

All internet based companies have outages...even Microsoft...

um problem I'm on a 1/2 of T-1 the problem isn't the connection, the problem lies is SE's inability to do what thier paid to do provide the service 24/7.

As for updates to software do it like I do with other games (Sims, Sims2 whatever) or the big one for this FFXI (CoP) sell it to me on a freakin disk that way I have a choice. Leave the game to be played as I pay for. I don't want thier updates I never bought the game to have updates I bought it to play.

[edit] Or better yet put me a button to a completly diff. set of servers for updates and let me get them at my liesure but keep the game accessable [/edit]

Quote:

And these companies give me a choice as to when and what to download as per WTC article five which SE does not do.

As for What I do care about is the game not being there WHEN I WANT IT(seeings as thats how I'm paying for it)

Also, it's worse for updates over here in the UK coz we can't properly download until both the US and JP have mostly completed... which is atleast 24-48hours after the initial event. I don't worry about this tho. I jus get on with my life and go out for a drink or sumthin.
There is a message that you should read before next signing in to FFXI and it is along the lines of "Don't let your Real Life suffer due to gamplay"Pay attention to it and live on... best way really

Paying for services rendered........ lol, sounds like a night out in the Red Light District to me. But for reals tho, I've had many issues with FFXI in the past week alone:

- I've been disconnected 4-5 times, with three of those while in a mob fight, resulting in death to at least one pt mate.

- Others have been disconnected during a mob fight which resulted in my death if it was one of the mages, or the whm.

- After every disconnection, i could not sign back into FFXI for at least a 5 min period sometimes longer.

Im not entirely sure of whats going on, but im not too enthused with the service provided since I came back to the game 2 months ago. With that said, i'm not a penny counter, but i sure wuld like to get my moneys worth. Well i guess another stop at the Red Light District wont hurt, lol.

Mutiple points to make:

A: Updates. Ya this is BS, I agrea. Im anoyed especialy since its so recnt after tha last major downtime, only this ones a lot longer. However I think that I understand whats happened. They performed the avaiable software updates ahead of the Hardware updates to simplify the bugshooting. If they did them both at the same time, sure WE could save the diffrence in downtime, built thats twice the bugs, and a longer time we have to deal with the aftermath. If your doing your own computer updates you might do software update after the hardware update but then you never know if the bugs are the software or the hardware... and SE doent have a little home PC, its a lot of Super Computers with Thousands of users on each one at any given time.
So suck it up all! With luck "Something" will get better, and the wait will have been worth it.
(I just hope they dont do somthing realy dumb like swap server Operating Systems)

B: Software updates
I agrea that software should be provided on a CD as an instalation update. Its probly veiwed as an additional expense though. The CD installation option is so rarely used, its practicly virgin...

C: New Players
If your just joining the game. Im sure you would get a letter of appology for todays events, if you wrote to them. They value new player as much as any one values new customers, probly more than existing customers at that... Anyway you have months of game play ahead of you especialy if you have full time job, or college.
Also new players may use a world pass given by another player already in the game to join the same server. There are 32 active servers in all, be sure its the server you want before jumping in, unless you dont care where you land. Look around there are often Link Shells (eqiv: Guilds) from every server which will help you get a pass for the one of your choice.

D: Connections
Ive gone from using 56k for over a year to now using DSL. It doesnt have the Downband a Cable modem has, but Its like going from a classic dell with win32 to a spiffy PIII with XP, or for us special few, a MacPlus to a AppleG3. Anyway, I used to have many common connection issues, consistant drop outs, and sevear lag at times. Now the connectional are flawless, and thats on a restricted bandwith, Ive limited coming off my own own server, even updates go pretty quickly (still like to be faster) though even CD installs take time...
Downside is, though you get a better connection, the game is still restricted to 56k bandwith per user, I figure to alow more users on a single location (just a guess though).
Hardware Upgrade...

Look at it this way, for the Japanese, it started 10 pm, and doesn't get done til 4 pm the next day. Do the math, I'm not sure that there's anyway that the Japanese could make up the majority of the players of this game anymore, so why do they always get the royal treatment?

ever notice how most GM's bend over backwards for a Japanese player and practically ignore most anyone else? at least don't do as much for non japanese players. Was watching when a Japanese BST intentionally MPK'd several parties, GM did nothing, but when one of them managed to MPK the BST, the GM issued him a warning that everyone could hear

Ive had worse stuff happen. i worked most of the maintence.. But as i said on many during othert maintenence times, it could be done better.. at least in a way that it doesnt create a "traffic jam" You have few hundred thousand people trying to download an update at one time. they should make it to either A. they only let a set amount of people down load at one time, making it alot faster, especvially for those with good/decent connections. B. Eh <.< i dont know what B is but im sure someone can think of one. Though i knowthis is Hardware upgrade instead of a software, im just saying for software updates mainly >.>; ok i dont know what im saying anymore.. ive been away from my moogle for to long.

Almost a year ago they had an update with maintanace that went really well. The reason was that while the maintainance is up, it let you check your version of FFXI and then download if necessary, so there was almost no server jams. They also need to not do major POL and FFXI updates at the same time.
