Hands on: Rain of Fear

ZAM adventures through a preview of EverQuest's 19th expansion.

Fans of the Velious era will be delighted by Kael Drakkel: The King’s Madness as the fight between Frost Giants, Coldain and dragons is revisited. Poor old King Tormax has been driven to the point of madness by the shards, his fear manifesting itself in his own paranoid reality.

Giants and Coldain fight because the King’s terror at the prospect of an invasion has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Those veterans who lost hours to the Coldain ring events, me included, will get that sentimental pang that pumps through the heart of Rain of Fear. The developers’ intent to revisit great moments in EQ history pays off repeatedly and even though I haven’t been a regular player for quite a while, the itch to level my paladin kept coming back.

Another zone that hearkens back to days of yore is the Valley of King Xorbb. The Lord of the Evil Eyes’ gaze can be felt across the zone, with the orb based designs keeping watch over some dangerous creatures that you will no doubt have to be careful of when pulling.

Wen is there going to be a list of Progression through the Rain of Fear going to be put up on Zam. It sure was helpful with all other expansions.
Is it just the pictures?

Looking at the pictures here and at massively it looks to me like these zones are just plain ugly, especially compared to the last couple expansions. Is it the pictures? I got a beta invite just dont have the time to see for myself.

It's not really supposed to be pretty and clean cities like VoA was. The theme of RoF is the corruption of the land by the fear shards. If something is corrupted, chances are it's not going to look pretty and clean. (:
