Coin Drop Ability to be Discontinued

This was posted over at the developer's corner: There are a number of scams out there where nefarious inviduals attempt to get people to perform a series of operations that results in the victim unknowingly dropping their coin on the ground. In order to help our players avoid these scams, we're taking action in the patch on Tuesday [note -- the patch is actually Wednesday]. We first considered popping up a confirmation box when attempting to drop coin on the ground, however upon reflection we could not determine a reason why anyone would want to do this, except perhaps when attempting to "self-trade" items and coin between characters. However dropping things on the ground is as you can imagine an extremely unsafe and unsupported way to trade items, and has created more headaches for players and our CS staff than it has done them good. To that end, beginning on Tuesday the dropping of coinage will no longer be allowed by the client. Players will of course still be able to destroy it if they wish, for instance, to releave themselves of unwanted copper. We look forward to hearing your comments. If there are any reasons that dropping coinage should be allowed that we haven't thought of, please reply and let us know.

Why don't they make it so you have a bank account that is good for the account (not every character) that way people can place items in the bank then take the item out of the bank with a different character. This is a great idea however I am sure it is not possible as someone has allready came up with this idea.
Nothing to do with scams

Prehaps this is nothing to do with scams...

Just think - people dropping coins all the time means more objects for the servers to keep track of and less information to pass to each player's computer. Eliminate the coins and lag goes down, servers run faster, game improves, bigger servers not required. Hurrah! Marketing, however, dictates that any change must be portrayed as Verant trying to respond to customer's problems rather than saving themselves money. No matter - less lag would be great!

BTW I've picked up copper lying around in the past and I was happy. However I would have got just as much by killing a few bats and selling the wings to traiders. The only time I've had plat from another player is when they GAVE it to me - I've never, ever, seen plat (or even gold) on the ground. When I've picked up bags with 100s of copper, it's been in places where a newbie wouldn't be!

To reiterate: even though I've benefitted from people dropping copper (monks mostly), it hasn't ammounted to a lot of money and I am quite happy if this change means less lag.

I guess I will put my 2 cp in to this lame post too.
Verant making it so we can not drop coins was a very lame deal but like most of the things they do are lame woulda been alot better if the game just asked are you sure you want to drop coins yes/no I have seen this option for many other things. I agree they need to spend their time on more important subjects like maybe sending their GM's to some customer service classes and maybe a little curtesy training. This IMO would benifit the game far more then the time they wasted making so we cant drop coins.
Coin Drop Twinking etc.

For those of us who prefer to solo this is a problem. While leveling, I prefer to keep my similar level characters in the same area. Shaman provides potions, Wizard provides evac of loot and purchasing of resupplies. Not being able to drop coin and have Wizard make purchases means must make the long journey to safe city for banking or TRUST that a stranger will not rip me off.

Furthermore, I believe the set of characters a game buyer is working on should be thought of as a team. Each character on the team should do what they do best and contribute towards the good of the team. This should be encouraged rather than discourged. A method for easily and safely trading loot between characters should be implemented with the next patch. This does not have to be in game. This could be built at the character select level. Alternatively, make use of the Windows OS and let us run two everquest sessions, so we can trade with ourselves.

The reason i dropped most of my cash is basically because non twinked lowbies really need it.

To us 500 silver aint that big a deal but to a first time player it really helps.

This is a lame *** twink fix. (a little late, everyone is twinked)

I find this "fix" silly.

If players are getting scammed that is their problem.

I collect everthing I can find since trying to get enough cash for my spells is nearly impossible by what come off the mobs. Maybe high lv chars have cash to burn but as a new player to EQ I'm starting to think about going else where. There are too many things that are too frustrating.

I thought this game was suppose to be fun.

How bout this, you leave the coin dropage how is it since i to have a twink and often go to a safe place and drop coin/items on the ground them log in twink and pick up items. If i lose the items/coin to server problems or just another player comes before i come back and grabs o well my bad. Now hers what you should do. I was in PoA last week and a belt of pine dropped but i had forgot to clean a large space out of my invatory and well we all know whats happens now.... nothing. No message that say you have no room clear a space and try and loot it again, it justs poofs. Now lore nodrop items i think SHOULD go back to the corps just like any LORE item. I bet 1000s of other people have had this problem with even better items. Fix that with your time plz. I think its a much better way to spend you time.

P.S. All the above post with anything refering to FU verant or any of its members should be deleted by monitor. Just playing childish.

I feel we should be able to drop coins. As a low level character people droping coins helped me get started, and now I would like to return the favor. Its more fun to find money than to have some one just give it to you.

I also feel it should be a little easier to make money on EQ the trade skills suck you have to have unlimited funds just to master them then you cant use them because you either loose money or break even when selling so why bother! Darkage seems like they have addressed this problem maybe I should start playing it instead!

Eliminating the coin drops is a waste of time and a total annoyance. There are much more important things Verant should be fixing like MoBs that warp to the other side of the zone when your in the middle of a fight rather than worrying about a few stupid people that can't figure out how to move money around.

I have an Enchanter, in addition to my main Druid character, and also do the coin illusion to med and have some fun at times. If someone is to dumb and can't use a mouse and move money from inventory to the bank then they shouldn't be playing in the first place. I'm sure these so called scams Verant uses as an excuse to eliminate this type of drop only work if the person has no common sense. Besides, the only time you should be pulling money from your inventory is at the bank or if your giving it to someone purposely.

Plus it eliminates a little income source for me since I can't run around the zone picking up dropped copper and silver from people that didn't want to carry it (paid for a few spells at my lower levels). On a busy night I could collect a platinum in copper and silver from my group dropping the unwanted weight.
There's more important things that need fixed

The only valid comment I have read is the enchanters concern about having an object to use as a minor illusion. Also several raids I have observed used scattered copper to allow PCs to have something to pick up on a corpse run during a raid. This prevents the rapid decay of the Body and allows for a Rez if the charitor gets unlucky during the short run. I believe that the coin dropping scam is a minor annoyance and people once informed of the scam will be hesitatant to be caught in it. The information can be via postings here or during the patch in the NEWS section. This allows informed people to make informed decisions when approached by unsavory charitors.
I enjoy Everquest and wish to see good game play not be babysat by BIG BROTHER. Thankyou for allowing me my 2cp (undropped) worth
But why?
# Nov 08 2001 at 9:53 AM Rating: Default
It's not that I think this is stupid, or a half-baked way of fixing an exploit. I just don't understand why.

So, I decide to drop some coin on the ground... It's on the ground! If someone else picks it up, so what? If I think for a second, that someone else might pick it up, I don't drop it. Or, I dropped it because I don't want it.

Seems to me, that the next step in this line of thought, is that you won't be able to drop anything on the ground because someone else might pick it up.

What about us enchanters??
Im an Enc and I often use minor illusion when Im gonna med up. If there is nothing near you for you to take the form of, then I often drop a copper and change into that... now what am I suppose to do if there is nothing around? Im not gonna drop a bag filled with good stuff just so someone can run by and take it from me... but loosing a copper.. who cares
Personally I think it sucks..
just make a statement or something telling ppl about the scams, cuz this solution sucks
#Anonymous, Posted: Nov 07 2001 at 11:19 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It is no one fault but the players if they get scammmed for not using the heads. I have played other RPG's on line where people have tried to scam me and failed all u have to do is use your head. Like why would anyone with common sense drop their money and not a least use the trade box.
Reality
# Nov 07 2001 at 10:12 AM Rating: Default
I do not think this is a very good solution to the problem for the following reason. We all (the players) strive for a reality based RPG game, thus the patch takes a reality from us players, dropped money. Think of how many times youve went to the grocery store or some other public place and got out of your car to discover a pennie, quarter or some other form of money on the ground. Thats reality people have dropped money on the ground for years since money was introduced to society. That is part of life keeping up with your money. It teaches resposiblity something our society needs now more than ever. Isnt it better to learn this in a game on the internet than to learn it in real life first. Now im going to say something about scams this might offened some people (so i appologize to those it does). I have been the victim of a scam in the past when i first started playing EQ. But guess whos fault it was mine for not using common sense and thinking all people have honor. Thats reaity i learned from it and never made the same mistake again. Taking all forms of scams out of the game baby-sits players period. I can understand if its a computer based cheat that allows you to gain something from someone using software. But if your a fast talker and you get some person with a lack of good old fashion common sense to drop money on the ground for you or (give you his armor in my case) then so be it. Let that person learn a lesson you cant trust everyone in life or in EQ theres good races out there and evil races out there THATS REALITY.

I have not been able to do much "twinking" during my experience w/ EQ, but I imagine there will be a great number of complaints about not being able to drop coinage. I, for one, applaud this. I feel that a character should earn his $$.

On the other hand, I have been helped by other characters by them giving me enough money to buy my 1st lvl spells.

In short, I dont think that this is a very good way to "protect" people from losing thier coin. I think that a pop-up window would be the best solution.

This is just one Shamans opinion,

RE: Coins and Twinks
# Nov 07 2001 at 11:28 AM Rating: Decent
I wish we could make up our minds on coin drop, trades between characters of the same account, twinking, etc.

Right now if two characters on the same account wish to make a trade, they require either a trusted facilitator, or they drop stuff on the ground in a secret spot. If Verant doesn't want that to happen, they should just stop us from dropping anything of value.

It's not always a twink. Last night, for example, my cleric and druid did a trade: a stack of cat pelts worth maybe 80PP, for a weapon worth maybe 80PP. Why would that be wrong?

Personally, I'd like to see us give up on controlling twinks and same-account trades, because we can't control it.
