Announcing EverQuest Underfoot!

Here is the official Underfoot expansion announcement as seen on EQLive:

Announcing EverQuest Underfoot!

In November 2009, the inhabitants of the world of EverQuest will enter the realm of Brell Serilis as they explore through the Underfoot. Announcing EverQuest® Underfoot, the 16th EverQuest expansion!

The Underfoot centers around the Heart of the World. This is the vast magma ball that floats in the center of a hollow sphere many miles across. Standing on any open interior portion of the sphere characters can look up to see the massive, blazing ball of living lava. The sphere is large enough that while individual areas have a "bowl" shape it is very minor. Lava flows into and out of the Heart of the World from volcanoes, lava tubes and crevasses all around the hollow sphere, like blood into and out of a heart.

It is into this troubled realm that players will travel.

Features:

Along with the many new quests, items, spells, and alternate advancement (AA) abilities, Underfoot will include the following features:

  • Expansion Progression Window – You'll be able to easily see what you have accomplished through Underfoot and which objectives you should achieve in order to travel in your desired progression path.
  • Focus Target Window – This new target window will let you add specific targets to your list which will be helpful to monitor the health of Friends or Foe.
  • New Zones – 12 to 15 new zones.
  • All Inclusive - The expansion includes all features and content from the 15 previous expansion packs.
  • More Weapon Models - Underfoot will have twice as many weapon models as any of the previous 15 expansions.
  • Visit the EverQuest Underfoot website for more details.

Background Lore:

The Plane of Underfoot

The Plane of Underfoot is ruled by a curious being known as Brell Serilis, the Duke of Below. Brell is dwarf-like in appearance, wears the garb of a spelunker, and wields a magic pickaxe. The plane itself consists of an elaborate system of caves and caverns. This plane is inhabited by all sorts of creatures, both good and bad, that normally dwell under the ground. Brell Serilis created the dwarves and placed them beneath the surface of Norrath as part of a pact among Tunare, Prexus and himself, in response to the arrogant claim staked on Norrath by Veeshan.

Brell Serilis

Brell is allied with Fizzlethorpe Bristlebane, and an enemy of Veeshan's. Followers of the Duke of Below believe that the surface world is a waste of space. They find true happiness in the caves, caverns and tunnels that permeate the belly of Norrath, but this is one of few points upon which all followers of Brell can agree. There are many different and often opposing factions who worship Brell. The Runny Eye Clan of goblins claim he is their father, much to the disgust of the dwarves of Kaladim who are certain that only the dwarves are the true children of Serilis. The vicious gnolls of Split Paw disagree entirely, for was it not Brell who sculpted them out of the sacred Clay of Cosgrove? Followers of Brell Serilis, in one form or another, can be found nearly anywhere you enter the Underfoot of Norrath.

History of the Underfoot

In time the other gods noticed Veeshan's work, and being often petty and jealous beings, they too came upon Norrath, intent upon leaving their mark. Brell Serilis was first, and from his Plane of Underfoot, a dark realm of vast caves and endless tunnels, he quietly created a magical portal to a cavern deep in the belly of Norrath. Through this portal the Duke of Underfoot seeded the depths of Norrath with all manner of creatures. Brell then returned home, sealing his portal within a labyrinthine chamber of mystical Living Stone.

And when the other gods came to Norrath, Brell Serilis approached each of them, and after some time convinced them to meet as one to discuss the fate of the world. The Great Mother Tunare, and Prexus, the Oceanlord were in attendance, and Rallos Zek, the warlord, was also there, yet in mistrust kept his distance. Brell, carefully avoiding all queries as to the origins of his information, told of Veeshan's discovery of the new and potentially powerful world in which she had deposited her brood. Words befitting the King of Thieves poured forth from Brell's lips and he proposed that they accept an alliance of sorts, to which all save Rallos Zek agreed, ignorant of the fact that Brell had already released some of his creations into the Underfoot of this new world.

The planet that would be called Norrath was divided up among these beings of power for the purpose of keeping the Wurmqueen in check. Each would create a race of beings to watch over Norrath and keep a vigilant eye on the schemes of dragonkind. Brell claimed the bowels of the planet and created the dwarves, stout and strong, deep beneath the mountains of Norrath. In the abysmal depths of the oceans Prexus left his children, the Kedge, hearty aquatic beings of great mental power and stamina. And on the surface of Norrath did Tunare create the elves, creatures of limitless grace and beauty, and Rallos Zek the giants, fierce and formidable beings, intent upon the defense of their lands. Thus began the Elder Age.

***

Fizzlethorpe Bristlebane and Cazic Thule came next to Norrath, and Brell met them, concocting a second pact with these latter gods, wishing another excuse to create more peoples into the world. Rallos Zek again watched from afar, determined to add to his creation as well, and this time Brell convinced the Warlord to join the pact, assuring him that it was indeed an appropriate time to fulfill his desires.

Deep in the earth did Brell return to create the gnomes, resembling dwarves to some extent, yet more wiry and gnarled, consumed with the tinkering of devices even more so than their cousins. On the surface, away from elves and giants, Bristlebane made the halflings, short and stubby folk, agile and with a propensity to meddle and even pilfer at times. Cazic Thule, Lord of Fear, was drawn to the swamps and jungles of Norrath and there created the green-skinned trolls and reptilian lizardmen. And Rallos Zek returned to the surface, pleased with his sanction to create even more peoples for his army. He made then the orcs, bred for battle and singled-minded in their desire for conquest and the ogres, massive, unmovable beings designed to have all the advantages of any race, hoping that they would develop as superior to all others.

You know EQ might not be dead if SOE would make some Game CD's to put in Stores unless its by Word of Mouth no one not even EB/Gamestop Bestbuy Walmart No Stores are telling people that Everquest is putting out a new expansion let alone even exists they are pushing EQ 2 in all the stores And the last real Disc CD DVD i got for EQ was from POP rest are all DDL.

I agree. For SoD, I didn't even realize they had started a digital download only policy, and I was hitting up every store trying to find a copy of SoD, thinking it would be cheaper by then than Sony's was (I was trying to buy it about 4 or 5 months after it came out). GameStop said they couldn't even find it in their computers and told me I must be mistaken about the title. They'd never heard of it. Nobody had. Which also means no one was advertising it.

Of course, this is because it was only available for digital download, but they didn't know that, nor did I until later. Not only is this a poor way to treat customers - I have to spend a few hours downloading and installing the game, instead of having it done in 20 minutes with discs - it's just a crappy way to save a couple bucks. If I ever have to reformat and reinstall everything (which I just did a month ago), I have to go through hours and hours of downloading again for each digital expansion instead of popping in discs. Thanks for caring more about your bottom line than your customer service, Sony.

When are big corps going to realize that, when cutting costs, customer service is not optional?
Good Idea, but...

This is a great concept. I have traveled to and fought in The Hole plenty of times, and have always wondered when the passage to the Plane of Underfoot would be accessable. I always wondered when getting past that door that the huge black construct at the bottom of The Hole would lead to something more then a dead-end.

And you know, I really hoped when that lore finally unfolded, and the Plane of Underfoot finally became accessable, it would be added on in a patch, as extra free content, similar to the way Blizzard adds on content in WoW. ...I hoped it woulden't be the subject of yet another expansion that we have to pay 40 bucks for. We already have enough expansions.

But I just expect too much, I guess.
Good Idea, but...

Looks like this expansion will reward the over-achieveing raiders. They should try a progression cap that will LIMIT the targets guilds can ingage in a period of time. Raiding guilds are killing our beloved EverQuest!

ALso, id like to reply to some of the negative posts directed towards Zanibus. NOT EVEYONE CAN BE A LOOSER WHO PLAYS A GAME ALL DAY INSTEAD OF WORKING AND SPENDING TIME WITH his/her CHILDREN! I BET SOME OF YOU SICKOS ARE THE ONES STARVING YOUR CHILDREN FOR EQ SUBSCRITPION MONEY! BWHAHAHA! LOOSERS! PATHETIC! GET A LIFE! STOP WATCHING EVERY MOVE SONY MAKES!

Yeah - sounds like another raid-only expansion to me:(

The last decent expansion was TSS - content for everyone from the high-end raider to the casual player like me. I enjoy playing a variety of characters in my limited playtime so am very unlikely to EVER reach the highest level. I am not the only one like this either - my enjoyment is in exploring different places with different toons but i haven't been able to go to any of the 2 newest expansion zones as I would get thwacked!!
I understand that Sony need to keep high-end players happy....but what about those of us who don't live and breath EQ - shouldn't we get something now and then???
yet another raid-only expansion????

If you haven't had time to see and do everything that's out there yet, then why does it bother you that more has been added that you won't have time to get to? If you weren't going to do it anyway, why does it irritate you that someone else can?

Enjoy what you have and keep doing what you were already doing, stop looking over your shoulder and comparing what you have to everyone else. You've already chosen to walk another path; so enjoy your route instead of envying others'.
What a Waste

I quit EQ 6 or 7 years ago, but I thought I'd stop by and see what things looked like now...

..and I have got to say, it looks hilarious. These are the same criticisms leveled against EQ expansions when I quit. Now to see a **16th** expansion. HAHAHA! Oh man, that is rich. Let me guess, they are stringing the player base along with more raid content while leaving the core of the game in shambles? Who needs a interesting world experience when there is bigger, better, more lootzezzes?! Literally chasing the dragon to figuratively chase the dragon.

Guess I haven't missed much all these years. Too bad, I was thinking how nice it would be to play again. I long for those early EQ days.

normally i dont post on public forums, cause the level of intelligence is too low for honest discussion and debate. and i never get drawn into flame fests....but you, sir, compell me...

a level 46 mage that quit 6-7 years ago? wow, your knowledge of EQ must be astounding. please, tell us why EQ sucks and we are wasting our time, almighty mage.

yea. 16 expansions. so, you can read....
yea. same complaints (and probably the same folks lodging them) since the dawn of EQ....

that means sony is doing something right, ya? if weve stuck around for 16 expansions and keep shelling out 40$ evertime they slap an exp together than apparently were having a good time, ya? and people dont complain about things they dont care about, its a waste of energy and somone elses problem.

so, taking that into account, i can assume EQ is better than whatever drivel youre playing, since it didnt even garner a mention from the almighty 46 Mage....

STFU and go back to wow...

Sounds to me like you are either still playing, (in which case, WTF are you bashing them for in the first place?), <or>, you also have quit playing. So whichever is the case: what exactly are YOU complaining about anyhow?

If you DON'T like the game and what it has become, then leave!

If you DO like it, then quit your ******** and play!

Just goes to show that you can't please everyone, so the happy stay happy; the miserable just try to make everyone else that way.

You sound like a bitter EQ failure. If you don't enjoy the game, stay away and don't begrudge those who do.

I have to agree with Philliden. You sound like a bitter little loser who can't stomach others enjoying something that he/she quit. Save your posts for losers.com.

Ralius please don't take this personally - not your fault SOE doesn't know what they are doing for the next expansion other than they figured out a title for it. How are you expected to report the news if they don't tell you anything right? 9 minutes and 8 seconds of video and I came away from that wondering exactly what Reyla said:

Reyla wrote:

I would have said:

They spoke about what great things they have done in the last 10 years, what they did all year, and how great the last expansion was. They told us and almost admitted their mistake in the 51/50 server and it's launch. Personally I think it was the reason for some of their VERY key staff leaving 2 months ago.

woopty-do Smiley: frown

They even had an uncomfortable moment when they announced the name of the expansion because it was suppose to be a big secret and it was busted right here on Alla's. Now that was worth watching the video for

Smiley: lol

I'm confused why they would introduce some unknown guy, technically called Thomas Terrazas by his parents, who's been with SOE for only 2 months. And who by the way has the charisma of a level 1 ogre. What in the world does he know about EQ that we don't? The only new stuff he provided in the last 1 minute of that 9:08 video was some drawing board shots. Talk about a puppet of Smedley.

woopty-do Smiley: frown

And the ONLY information he offered during those 9 minutes that was even remotely new was that players that participate in events in the game will get to have the expansion early.

woopty-do Smiley: frown

I'm bouncing with joy knowing now I can earn myself the right to buy (whatever that might cost) an expansion early that offers nothing. They're kidding us right? Allowing us to enjoy nothing early for money? New concept in business and advertising.

woopty-do Smiley: frown

------ I would add a cool signature to the bottom of this post but not today. Today I'm embarassed to admit I have just wasted 9 minutes and 8 seconds of my life watching an infomercial about buying into something - but first let me tell you how great we are... -----

just a slight correction - Thomas Terrazas has not only been with SoE for 2 months - he has been the producer for Vanguard for a long time. Not been a popular one though, as he tends to not really communicate with the playerbase...

He'll fit in with all the previous Dev's then. Other than Ngreth, I don't think a single dev. actively comunicates with the players if not forced to.

SKlug communicates almost constantly with us and has done so for a long time now. Other devs also pop in from time to time, but that can be difficult with their work schedule. While I agree that communication has not always been above water level, they have improved tremendously in the last year alone and SKlug in particular (also Ngreth) show up in the forums constantly. Good people if treated with respect. :)

We do try to find the time to respond to players... more likely than not it's when we have time, when there's a question to be answered, and when it serves the general well-being of the player-base. This doesn't mean we wouldn't like to spend more time on forums and participate in the epic threads of the day, but we are aware that the more interesting the discussion, the more time it takes away from other endeavors.

Private messages may also get our attention, if we're too wrapped up in things to notice what's going on in the forums. :-)
