There's a Rate Hike Coming

Hang onto your wallets. This was just posted at this link on the main Everquest site. EverQuest price increase 03/25/2002 Due to the increased costs of running the EverQuest game service, we will be increasing our subscription rates in April. Effective April 25, the new monthly subscription rate will be $12.95/month. We will continue to offer discounts from the new rate plan on multi-month subscriptions. You don’t have to do a thing; you will automatically be migrated to the new billing structure under your current subscription plan when your current subscription plan expires. New EverQuest rates as of April 25, 2002: $12.95 per Month $35.85 for 3 Months $65.70 for 6 Months HOWEVER, for a limited time only (from April 10 through April 24, 2002), you may extend your current subscription for an additional 12 or 24 months by signing up for the new EQ 12 or 24 month plan – and reap great savings off of the new rates: Extend for 12 months for $109 US – and get a 30% discount off of the new monthly rates! Extend for 24 months for $190 US – and get a 39% discount off of the new monthly rates! Now is the time to lock in these rates, so don’t miss out. All pricing plans (except for the 12 and 24 month extension plans) are recurring, meaning you will continue to be billed at the appropriate interval, until you cancel your subscription. Note that purchasers of the full game will receive their free month of game play after supplying valid billing information. If you cancel your subscription during the free month, no charges will be made to your credit card. New York State and Texas residents will be charged sales tax. All subscription fees will appear on your credit card statement under the heading "SOE*EverQuest". Please note: The subscription charges are in addition to the cost of the game. You will need to purchase a copy of the game from a retail store or online at the Station Store. The price of the game will vary depending upon the store.

i find it bad enough to have to pay for everquest before ever getting signed up. $40 Trilogy, $30 luclin, and now yet ANOTHER $30 expansion...

but what is really *PATHETIC* is how many people have stated is that having to bring down the servers for a patch and *THEN* bring them down again to fix the first problem they created with the inital patch!

30% increase...not too much right? like hell, imagine a 30% increase on a new car ($20,000 @ 30% = $26,000)...

seems to me that their solution to making money is to BOTH jack up the rates AND make a new buggy expansion just to rip us off from $30 more!

i learned my lesson with luclin, pretty much a useless expansion...they better make some DRASTIC changes in the first months...such as:

-making EXISTANT customer service
-making GMs that actually help you (and i'm talking about /report, not sending tells to GMs)
-fixing all the god damn bugs that they have yet to fix from day one
-stop with the unnecessary nerfing!
Price increase = butt

Im sixteen, and I pay for my own eq account and for my own cable modem. It might not seem like much but I really dont want to pay three more dollers for something that doesent work all that great. I really wish little things like the Bazzar would work, or they would hire some more cusstomer service people. They havent said anything about what the money is going towards, if its to improve the game im ok with that. But it seems like every time they promise something they give us something diffrent so we dont pay attention to what we wanted. I dont know about you guys but I would like to see the detailed grass and bushes like on the back of the Luclin box. And for the LOVE OF GOD, its been more then 4 months since Luclin came out, finish the town of Sanctus Seru!!!! And that DAMN BAZZAR!!!
Take it easy

Now listen, think of this..

420,000x10 = somewhere around $4,200.00 a month (420,000=how many players)

Now, in 12 months, that rises to like..oh lets say 50million. 50million a year isn't that much for such a HUGE game, not counting Legends which isn't included.

Anyway, a $3 inflaton won't make so much a deal for you, yah, it is +$3 a month but who really cares. It is for verant and SOE so they can make the game better.

Just deal with it, things happen, don't quit because of an extra $2.95
RE: Take it easy
# Mar 26 2002 at 4:23 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, I don't know what you were taught, but I was taught that $50million dollars is a good sum of money. Having said that, how many companies manage to survive and prosper while never seeing that much per year. And think about where that money goes. How much do you think they spent to rewrite the engine for Luclin to improve graphics, not to mention Velious and Kunark, both of them were billed as expansions, but they still weren't needed. They could have spent the money for creating even one of those to cover most of the increased expense they are whining about now, not to mention having some of those developers help to develop better CS. I personally don't think the $3 more is bad for the hours I've spent on EQ, I just object to their having new expenses they can't cover, yet they can take up the time and resources (read money) to run the Legends service. I think that rather than provide Legends for those that want to spend $30 more a month and bill us for the rest with this $3 more, they should have just raised the price a few bucks more and provide the Legends services for the rest of us. The only good thing is they have given us enough warning to decide if we still want to play a game that, for me anyway, stopped being fun quite some time ago. This is just the motivation I needed to resolve myself to completely severe my addiction. I am kind of interested in seeing how much they raise the prices when some of these new games like Star Wars come out. You can bet if they are raising it now to cover the costs that they will take a big jump when everybody that has said they are going there stop paying for EQ accounts.

Thrust Poles Own

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to tell ya guys that I have experimented with all 3 fighter classes already. My paladin, which I screwed up horribly by placing spec pts into everything hit like a girl, so I made a merc. Being a merc made me frustrated as I could not get into groups at the higher levels. However, using the knowledge i gained from the previous two. I decided to make a thrusting polearm armsman. Why thrust? Cuz of the sweet bonuses against chain which midgard wears. Why midgard? cuz they're currently kickin **** on merlin atm. I went full polearm and split my pts into thrust and parry. Currently my pts are:

Polearm - 26
Thrust - 18
Parry - 17

Experimenting with this I crept into the battlegrounds. I then squared off 1on1 with a Troll Zerker that was red to me. Opening with a crippling blow I brought him down to his knees by taking 3/4 of his LIFE in ONE shot! I followed up with the chain move Disabler and finished up in 2 shots. The advantage with plate against slash weapons were nice as well, as it took 3 of them to take me down before i killed another. The whole point of this? Thrust Poles OWN. and armsmen KICK *****
quite whining
# Mar 25 2002 at 9:59 PM Rating: Default
I am sorry, but for the majority of these post people are whining about 3 bucks per month. Lets put this in perspective:
These game has been running for 3 years at $10 per month. And in three years they have now only raised it $3 dollers. This is inflation if nothing else, be realistic. It cost butt load of money to run and maintain servers, to pay whining programers that are ******** about carpal tunnel and eye strain, and to pay all the costumer service people and lawyers trying to keep all of you whining B**** off of varients back.
$3 dollers is a pack of cigerettes, 2 sodas at a fast food joint, 3 candy bars, and 6 to 9 games at the arcade and a couple gallons of gas. You figure what wasteful thing you do in your life that cost three dollers and decided if the 10 to a possiable 720 hours of playing eq is worth giving up $3 dolers worth of that thing. Your decision, you can quite if you want to.
Now on Vi side, they get an additional $1.2 million dollers and besides initial reactions, all of you will be playing tomorrow with a lose of maybe .05% of total population. So stop your whining and take a nap and start playing again tomorrow. Thank you.
RE: quite whining
# Mar 26 2002 at 12:51 AM Rating: Decent
I think i am justified to whine when they can ask for more money, but cannot fix 3yr old bugs. In some states, that is regarded as FRAUD. So if paying more for less is something u like, I have a broke down car in my yard U can have for 30% more than what i paid for it....
Timing?
# Mar 25 2002 at 9:53 PM Rating: Default
Anyone else notice that the timing on this announcement is just about a full month after the Legends server came online? Perchance Legends was not quite the success that VI expected it to be and they must recoup in some way?

Personally, 3 bucks is no big deal. Though as someone mentioned, it would be nice if we would get some of the Legends bells and whistles for our additional cash...
How do I rationalize?
# Mar 25 2002 at 9:44 PM Rating: Default
I would pay up to 25$ a month for an online game.

So the price isn't what angers me.. what angers me is that i'm payinng for something that is 3 years old. DATED TECHNOLOGY. All Luclin did was modify the engine in some sorts. Still the same EQ engine they've been using for years.

The amount of servers / expansions I don't have don't concern me.

0h well, AC 2 or Star Wars Galaxies looks sweet!
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 25 2002 at 9:17 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Are they kidding? Surely they have to be kidding. Don't tell me they're going to raise the price per month by $3 . . . What justification do they have? Where do they get the guts to demand this from their already 420,000 (a direct number taken from a VI press release) strong members. That means that they were already getting $4,200,000 dollars a moneth. What the hell do they need all of that money for? Now they want $3 more per month from every single one of those members for . . . nothing. They havent changed anything, all they've done is produce a half-assed expansion and a new patch that makes the game easier for newbs to infest EQ!
Get used to it
# Mar 25 2002 at 9:06 PM Rating: Decent
Its just economics folks. One advantage to a monopolist is that they have any easy time controlling cost. Everyone has to use their product or do without. Introduce competition and you lose some of the economies you realize from a huge subsriber base. Of course, the benefit you are supposed to realize is a superior product driven by fear of competition. I hope verant realizes that the reason that their subscriber base has fallen off a bit IS competition and that it will get a lot worse in the coming months if they don't do some more to enhance quality.

you play 1.5 hours a day

thats 45 hours per month,

$3.00 / 45 = about 6.5 cents

You cant afford to pay 6.5 cents more per hour of playing.. . man what a whiner.

works out to about 29cents total per hour of play

God i wish the games at the arcade were this cheap.
RE: HMM
# Mar 25 2002 at 9:33 PM Rating: Default
You say only 6.5 more cents per hour? This $3 increase is a 30% increase in the current subscription fee. 30% is HUGE in a business that is as large scale as Everquest. I want to see what chages will be made with this 30% increase. More developers they claim. I'll bet the rate of patches, new content, quests, etc. will still remain the same as it always has been and the costumer service will still remain at no more than "crap."
They release a patch with some changes that players have been begging for over 3 years for and now they believe that this change allows them to charge more money. They still haven't implemented the bazaar and new interface which they had promised before the release of the Luclin expansion. These issues should be fixed first before VI even thinks of raising the subscription fees.

Im sure Im not the only one who knew there would be a price hike after the Legends marketing plan. It was obvious. What peeves me, is the fact that Im still waiting for Verant to clean up its mess from the Luclin upgrade. I spent about 2k on an upgrade on my PC. (way above recommended now). Yet, here is another expansion. Whoahhh!!! Anyone else feel like theyre being herded thru a Las Vegas buffet line?? I admit 3 extra dollars is not a lot, IF the game is still running as well as it did with the initial value. All Ive seen lately(besides new graphics) is a decrease in quality and support. Now comes a price hike?? BAD timing. By the way, Dread Lord Surak, do you happen to work for Verant? If not, you should. Durlinn Deviraux 51 Ranger

Dumb sh*ts like you make me sick - get a clue about economy before you start flaming others for bringing up valid points. Most people aren't pissed because of a price hike, most people are pissed because no valid reasons were given that justifies the price increase. The reasons that were given in the press release were mostly just half-assed attempts to justify an increase that will bring--most likely--NO changes to the service/improvements whatsoever. Where are the changes and improvements that the subscribers were promised at the launch of SoL? The Bazaar and the new interface come to mind.

Btw, my character's name is Laiele and I play on Tholuxe. Come ***** at me all you want there if you think posting anon doesn't allow for any measure of expressing one's opinions.

# Mar 26 2002 at 6:41 AM Rating: Decent
Something i always say is that some people have the worst experience from Verant Customer Service. And i believe them. On the other hand, on the same server (Quellious)kstuck is, i had no problems with customer service in 2years of playing time.

My last interraction with them was when the boats broke.

Guides Isobo, Yantic, Waeba acted as my personal teleporters around because i wanted to get my new spells and could not get into the boat. Of course they where obliged to do that since boats not working is Verant's problem but they DID help for almost 3hrs.

So it depends on what you ask them to do. If you died for example and you find CR hard...and want a GM to help you...thats your problem. Next time be more careful. Its not the GM's problem. So if you think not helping you when you die is crappy service then you are in error. Many people are that way: "I died and lost all my items...i fell of the boat...".

On the other hand if game bugs affect your gameplay, or stupid patches resulted on your not being able to play 24/7 (as advertised) then the service IS crappy.

Just wanted to put matters into perspective.

Sometimes it depends on what you ask for...and how...

I've been happy too - I've derived a lot of enjoyment over my last couple years of play. I think I'll sign up for their 24 month plan, as it looks to me that it comes out to less than $8 a month to go that route. And no, I don't think there is any fear of them going belly up during that time leaving me without a game to play.
Pay more? upgrade service!
# Mar 25 2002 at 7:50 PM Rating: Default
Paying 3 dollars more is not that big of a deal, but if I am going to pay more I would like more attempts to correct existing problems. For i.e. logging on, reducing downtime, better customer support, and at least an attempt to fix some of the glaring hitches that are all too common with EQ. Again, is 3 bills really that big of deal, well at the current rate it's not, but show some improvements that would make everyone happy. I'm sure verant/sony would get less complaining, and then they would have more time to do whatever it is they do when they're not producing more expansions. Thank You and Goodnight!!

$12.95 per month now? OK, I can handle it. A new expansion on the way? OK, but what about all the stuff that hasn't been finished yet? There are 22 zones for the Old World we have yet to see (look at your maps) AND a couple on Kunark!! Should we expect these zones to be "trickled" to us like Stonebrunt and The Hole? Sheesh, how long did THAT take? Why don't we try to flesh out what was originally envisioned instead of taking on new expansions?

Don't even mention Luclin, peeps are still finding stuff there...now PoP is coming too....oy, vey....
