A Look at the New Interface

The EQ Live coders wanted to say hello in their own special way, so they sent us a screenshot of the whole gang in the Temple of Veeshan. Besides showing off the whole team, the screenshot also gives a nice glimpse into the new interface they are working on. This is definitely worth checking out. To get a more detailed view, make sure you use the zoom in function of IE (right click on the image). Click here to see the screenshot.

Have you noticed all that the spell gem window can contain one more spell than usual that mean one more spell to memorise, hope it still like that when it came live.

Yay! They finally made the windows more like DAoC's. It's about time too. DAoC stole so many conecepts from Everquest that it's about time EQ steals some ideas from DAoC.
What are you people smoking
# Jun 22 2002 at 1:11 PM Rating: Default
I don't know what version of DAoC you all are talking about but I play that a bit more than EQ (Mainly because eons ago I got bored with EQ and just up and left ORPG's in general...until DAoC)

However the only thing that even remotely resembles the DAoC interface is the little X on the windows, the rest of it is fine. And personally if this goes live soon, I'll most definately just switch back over to EQ, DAoC is alright for the first 35 levels but by the time you hit 50 all you want to do is slit your wrists to add a bit of color to the world.
Looking Good

question about the GM
# Jun 22 2002 at 9:43 AM Rating: Default
See that GM Hobart? the barbarian in the back? Is he by any chance the basis for Hobart's War Helm? One of the best helms in the game. It's just that his name jumped out at me when I saw it.
#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 22 2002 at 11:18 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Alot of GMs get items named after them - Hobarts Ring of War, Hobarts War Helm, Rowyls Armor (Druid Thurg), etc.
Pretty cool, hope it is skinable like rumor claims.

Hopefully they stole the way you count money from Anarchy Online too, much simpler to just type in the ammount you want to take off your character/bank. Clicking upwards of 300times to get just the right amount of plat is quite annoying.

Another thing that'd be cool if they stole from AO would be the IRC item database/chat interface...so you could just drag and drop items into the chat screen and the item's description was made available for everyone that sees the text via clicking.
Hopefully...

Hopefully, this will be live soon. Hopefully, they included support for multlple chat box windows. Hopefully, they cleaned up the code so it will be easier to use those 3D glasses I bought. Hopefully.
When's it going live?
# Jun 22 2002 at 2:49 AM Rating: Default
ok the real question is
"What is this going live?" anyone know?
RE: When's it going live?

Actually I think they are planning on it being released this summer (with the bazaar interface soon after). They have said it would definitely be before Planes of Power (which should actually have a new particle-system for spells). The new UI is already in internal testing, but not on the Test server yet.

MOBHUNTER.COM interviewed Scott Hartsman (Technical Director for EverQuest) and talks briefly abvout it in the interview. It's about half way through the interview and can be found:

CastersRealm (EQ) posted about it on June 18th.

on the spell gem bar i see 9 gems? or is that a spellbook at the bottom? i would frikkin love the new interface just because of that if there were 9 gems, but alas it does look like a book...sigh

Unfortunatly, I believe it is a spellbook, but you gotta love the new look to things, even the spell effects! Can't wait for the bazaar interface also, will make selling hella easier!
Naming violation
# Jun 22 2002 at 1:38 AM Rating: Decent
In my dreams:

"Hello there, Raphalfelf. This is GM Fyrewalker. Your name is in violation of the Verant Character Naming Policy as stipulated in the EULA, as it contains the two words 'half elf.' Your name has been changed to 'Broflofsky' until you can choose a name within our guidelines. Have a nice day!"

Suck it.

I also like Veddartha which is most likely a combo of Vedder (Eddie Vedder, singer for Pearl Jam) and Siddartha (the original founder of Buddhism). This one I don't mind as much, cause they were both philosophers and he didn't just choose a gimpy name like "Muderman" or "Raphalfelf" (GAWD those are stupid names).
COOL WITH ME

Blah whatever. I just want pet health bars. Got a screenshot over at the mage message boards. Suppose to have buffs to. Only thing I want.
Interesting

Oh great, gota memorize what each spell icon stands for now(or use alt). Make it go away! I wonder if they'll let us keep the old interface, by going through options?
Sigh
# Jun 21 2002 at 10:41 PM Rating: Decent
What really makes me laugh is how you guys rip on them taking 2 years to do this, and how much the graphics look like DAoC etc. What you people need to remember is the graphics are probably one of the smallest parts of the interface. For the interface to WORK, it must be CODED. Meaning there is code written for scrollbars to work, for text to show in the right boxes, to be able to move windows, etc etc etc. Behind every little bit is code. For example, the group system operates transparently like the old one however it's been completly rewritten to fix the old "group bugs".

The interface looks much cleaner, more like the MMORPG standard of today, and looks like it will operate in the same manner.

Yes, yes, that's all well and good. But WTF are we paying these people for anyways?? 50,000 subscribers paying from 12.95 a month to 29.95 a month. Gimme a break, they can code a little. I'm not going to cry for them, and I will expect good things, cause they are capable whether they think so or not.
RE: Sigh
# Jun 22 2002 at 7:50 AM Rating: Default
make that 450,000 subscribers!
thats ( with no legends included ) a minumum of 5,827,500 dollars PER MONTH. sure they have to pay people and stuff, and do all their servers...but when your company makes 69,930,000 a year you better bust your butts to make us happy.
RE: Sigh
# Jun 22 2002 at 3:18 PM Rating: Decent
Don't forget the fortune they pay to Sony. You might want to read the article about the interview with one of their tech guys. He states they only have 46 people on the team which is very few for such a large project.

Just another note. How many times have you gone through the drive through at McDonalds or BK and they put mayo on your burger aor left out your fries but you go back to them time and time again and are never angry about the billions they make. Verant does a good job at what they do but to a small extent they still fall under the problem of this country that we have accepted mediocraty as the norm and therefore corporations will only provide us with what we demand. People have demanded a lot of Verant and it shows. If only we were so diligent with complaints and boycots to the rest of corporations out there.Just my little rant, thank you for your time.
RE: Sigh
# Jun 22 2002 at 11:06 PM Rating: Default
I don't put in 4-8 hours a day at BK or MCd's. I don't sit around for 1-2 hours waiting for the oil to heat up the fries. It's fast food and that's all you get. Code code code, Woopdy F'n Doo... It's no longer a break through game. It's no longer at the top. It may have been close to it a few years back. They need another break through efort and a top of the line Engine to keep people in it.

I've worked at McGonads for some time in my youth, and like EQ there are people that ***** regularly about the service....yet continue to come back on a daily basis.

Though I think that's more an issue with the prevalent stupidity of human nature, not mega-corporations ;)

Overall
# Jun 21 2002 at 10:00 PM Rating: Default
I would say overall it is an improvement in graphics, and possibly user friendly. Here it comes...... *but*, maybe too many options(from what it looks like) will hinder the players more than help. I think that they should keep it as simple as possible but just change the graphics from the old interface. The only addition I can see that would be the biggest help is the invite/disband buttons on the group window.
I might be skeptical, but I'm still excited to see how it pans out. I don't think they could do anything with the UI to make me stop playing EQ 8P
RE: Overall
# Jun 21 2002 at 10:37 PM Rating: Good
I don't think I have clicked the invite/disband button since level 2. (ok, not that long, but a VERY long time ago)

CNTL I and CNTL D work great, and are quick instead of moving the mouse somewhere and clicking.

Transparency

Hopefully there is a slider bar to change transparency. I liked that about the DAOC interface.

Just so you know that option already is in EQ it's just not a slider bar. Its the /wincolor command. Look for more details in your manual file.

Gallinte and his Forehead isn't cheating one bit. Have you ever seen casters and priests wearing: Golden Efreeti Boots (GEBs)? Well, there is a whole set of that armor. It drops from the Noble Dojorn in the Plane of Sky and is of course all/all same as the commonly seen boots.

chat windows
# Jun 21 2002 at 7:20 PM Rating: Decent
I would say that the separate "chat" windows are one of the best parts. Check it out: All your communication gets displayed in one window while you see actions in the other one. You issue / commands and talk with one cursor. No need to switch windows to do different things, just use the command and it goes to the appropriate window. Also, just a thought, but wouldn't it be nice to not have the / command text that you just entered disappear after you typed it? At least the option to not have it disappear. That way you could tell exactly how you screwed up that last command.
RE: chat windows

That feature is sorta available now... just hit the shift+up arrow key and what you type before will come back up.
9 gem slots

Maybe i'm the only one who noticed 9 spell gem slots.

that totally kicks ***...even though i'd like to see larger groups or the ability to group multiple groups together for exp sharing. also the group mates mana br idea is awesome maybe this is the unfinished version? /shrug
RE: 9 gem slots

Sorry to point that out, 9 slots would be pretty slick though.

so from what i see on this screenshot they added eye candy and seperate chat windows...woopdey freaking doo....I want the bazaar damnit!

I had the same problem with disbanding myself (or others). Just remap the 'disband' command. I changed mine to ctrl-alt-D.

Remember when...
# Jun 21 2002 at 6:59 PM Rating: Good
Remember when you first started how hard the interface seemed to be but now it's second nature?

That will happen with this one too. You will get used to it and "probably" like it more. Heck, I already never use the old Inventory screen.

This is definatly a (large) step in the right direction.
SWEET

My vote's in. The old interface is tooooo old!! Let's make this live! =)

I agree w/ the comment about the title bars. They are unnecessary and take up valuable room! =)

hey.. where's the window that pops up the current zone map on the screen?? ;)
Very Nice
# Jun 21 2002 at 6:50 PM Rating: Decent
I personally don't know of the DAoC Interface, but this new one looks great, a huge improvement. what I think will cause the most trouble though, will be the "menu" at the top of the screen, having to go up there to see how your pet is doing or to switch chat windows will be very confusing, at least for me. And I am also wondering about the logistics of the dual chat windows...how will one be able to type in one and then switch to the other? It seems like they may have thought this out a little too much. Yes a separate window for a different channel is helpful, but it will get confusing. Well, i don't mean to rag on the interface, but imo it is a bit over-complex.

I think DAoC had it right with the tabs for different chats and only one window. Windows everywhere obstructs your view.

God knows with the performance issues of Luclin that you can't afford to run 1600x1200 to get the real estate you need for that many windows. Hell, my box is a slug at 1024x768 and before Luclin it was smokingly fast.

However, I do like the new interface in general. It looks like they're expanding the icons for spell effects, which is good. Having 8 shields in my buff window didn't tell me much. More unique icons will be handy. It certainly gives the game a more modern and polished feel.

RE: Very Nice
# Jun 21 2002 at 10:22 PM Rating: Decent
The way that menu bar at the top looks like a toggle menu to toggle on/off the separate windows. That would be my best guess about what it does. We'll just have to wait and see, lol
