A Look at the New Interface

The EQ Live coders wanted to say hello in their own special way, so they sent us a screenshot of the whole gang in the Temple of Veeshan. Besides showing off the whole team, the screenshot also gives a nice glimpse into the new interface they are working on. This is definitely worth checking out. To get a more detailed view, make sure you use the zoom in function of IE (right click on the image). Click here to see the screenshot.

I think it looks really cool hope it goes live soon....nice job gals and guys .
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 23 2002 at 3:35 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) How about they fix the missing pixel in the capital W character...
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 23 2002 at 3:11 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I simply cannot believe that all this time has gone by and all they've got so far is this POS. There seems to be VERY little difference between the current interface and this one. You'd think that by now, with "all the work" they've put into this, the interface would be something to /gasp about but sadly, like many many many other things with EQ, it disappoints..
RE: An Impatient Customer
# Jun 23 2002 at 4:25 PM Rating: Decent
I think it was mentioned before, but changing the graphics is a mundane thing that probably takes them very little time. They are doing much more then just this. They are fixing and implementing a new grouping system that should (they said it) get rid of the group bugs that exist and allow for a change of leadership.

There could be other things in the interface that they aren't showing in the screenshot. They could have turned all the pet windows off (health, buffs, or whatever). To me this looks exactly the same as the basic EQ interface, aside from the extra chat window. Perhaps you should be more patient and wait for it to go live so you can play with it, rather then ******** about a screenshot?
Additional suggestions
# Jun 23 2002 at 3:02 PM Rating: Decent
The one main thing I would suggest with a new user interface is significantly more customization. I currently twink the .INI file both manually and with the couple of 3rd party programs for such things and I use "hitsmode" as well, though it took an entire afternoon to get the positioning and size correct for all three windows. I really like the suggestion of being able to click on a person and up pops a NEW window for chat complete with the tell sent to them - this should work for a person in my chat window, but also for anyone I click on. Having more than 10 hotbox slots would be helpful for those characters such as rogues and monks who have more than 10 abilities to put in there. The mule comment made was very right on. Banks should have more slots, period. like ten times the number along with organizational tools such as chests within chests and so on. Perhaps the ability to buy a room in a bank to keep stuff? These are just my feelings. Have a nice day. :-)

Dimmer switch
# Jun 23 2002 at 11:21 AM Rating: Default
Don't look too bad. How about a dimmer switch to control the brightness of the controls so they don't overpower a dark scene? Or a pop up chat that pops-up (duh) when someone sends you a tell?
RE: Dimmer switch
# Jun 23 2002 at 11:32 AM Rating: Decent
A pop up chat would (DUH) pop up at an inconvenient time. I can do without.
Anyway to give suggestions?
# Jun 23 2002 at 10:40 AM Rating: Default
Is there anyway to give suggestions to them on the new interface? The only problem I have is the transparent chat window, its the reason I still use the normal interface now, it just doesnt work right, some colors look ok, but then some fade through and are hard to see
RE: Anyway to give suggestions?
# Jun 23 2002 at 11:18 AM Rating: Default
And how about a dimmer switch so the controls don't drown out a dark scene? And a pop-up chat that's hidden until someone send you a tell (or what ever you define)?
New GEMS????, etc
# Jun 23 2002 at 9:57 AM Rating: Decent
The Interface looks pretty good and Annon (2 below me) made some great points, all of which I agree, so I will not repeat what he said. It woulod be nice to have mana represented for group members, along with health, but we have been doing OK without that for a while, so I can live without it. It would also be nice if you could get info for multigroups, like in raid situations. (Health bars etc). There are buttons at the top that seems to let you select different screens, so for all we know, all the features we are complaining about not being in the interface are there. What WOULD be nice is not having to learn a new command line language to customize your UI. I have no problem with it, but I know lot of people do not take advantage of custumization that's currently available because "it's too complicated". One final thought.....changing the Gem icons for the spells???? WTF? There is NO reason to do that at all, now we have to learn what the icons means all over again.....
RE: New GEMS????, etc
# Jun 24 2002 at 10:02 AM Rating: Default
New spell gems are a awesome addition, no more wondering if you are casting SoW or Snare. ;o) Sure there is a learning curve, but well worth it in my opinion.
lame

I may be a purist, but personally I hate the new look for interface. I find it ugly and pointless. Honestly if it ain't broke dont' fix it.

Start flames now if yer juvenile enough to need to.

hmmm
# Jun 23 2002 at 6:14 AM Rating: Excellent
Apart from the differing chat windows and the availability of invite/disband, I don't see a whole lot of difference between this interface and the old one. Just different bitmaps.

As long as they're changing the chat windows, I sure hope they change the chat text to be a little more customizable. Looks like they have multiple windows for multiple chats (which is cool) but there is still WAY too much space between lines. Ideally I'd like to have to ability to select the font, size, line spacing (!!!), color, window etc. for each type of text. Along with how much I want kept in the buffer for each text type (by size or by time)!!!

Other things I want? I want to be able to double click on a line in chat (in the trade channel, for instance) and automatically start a tell to that person. I want to be able to copy and paste text from the chat window. When I highlight a buff, I want it to tell me how much longer it has to run. I want to see mana-bars for my group members (!!!) Mana numbers instead of just the blue bar would be even better.

I want a journal, where I can scratch notes (locs, names, etc.) then get them back later. I'd like icons as an option for the hot buttons instead of five characters of colored text. Packs with more than 10 slots (maybe bank only, or just make the bank have more slots) - do they really want us to have mules just to hold crap? The ability to type in numbers instead of selecting them with a slider. Better auto-follow. More lines on the hot-buttons text definitions (five is not enough.) The ability to type a full line of auction text on the hot key text definition line (same text length as chat text.)

Spell book that doesn't take up the entire screen. Customizable stats window (so I can see only what I want and make the window as small as possible.) Rollup windows (that stay small until you mouse over them, then they expand to their regular height). The bazaar interface. Much better /bug and /feedback interfaces (what have I /bug'ed before, what is the status, etc.) I'd like to know where I am in the queue when I submit a petition.

Nice to haves? I'd love customizeable client side messaging "Your hit points are below 15 % !!" or "Harnessing of the Spirit on Rmog will wear off in 2 minutes". I'd love customizable real-time log parsing ("You have slain a Ravishing Dvorlag - the battle was 4.1 minutes long - you did 8 dps melee, 11 dps pet, 38 dps spell") I'd like secure MQ trading. I'd like NPCs to be more knowledgeable about their area ("Where's the bank?" "Let me show you!")

That's it from the top of my head... dinner's almost ready, or I'd probably have more.

Just a FYI about the spell book, it IS being worked on to show up in this new interface as a window (transparent I believe).

OMG.. if you like Camelot so much go play it. Its a piece of crap game. There is absolutly nothing about that game that is better than EQ.

Wooo the graphics look nice, but the gameplay sucks ***** Mithic's idea of a balanced game is to nerf everyone as much as possible. Where as EQ actually improves players.

Can you honestly believe that in 6mo time anyone will be playing DaoC with Starwars/WoW/AO2/EQ2 comming out? Highly unlikely. DaoC will just fade away.

Oh... the interface? Other than the invite/disband buttons, ITS EXACTLY THE SAME as before. So I dont know where your getting this EQ ripped off DaoC's interface...

Always fun to point out how wrong posts are when they say things like "Can you honestly believe that in 6mo time anyone will be playing DaoC with Starwars/WoW/AO2/EQ2 comming out? Highly unlikely. DaoC will just fade away."

Want to try for another six?

But this..

"Wooo the graphics look nice, but the gameplay sucks ***** Mithic's idea of a balanced game is to nerf everyone as much as possible. Where as EQ actually improves players."

Makes me wonder what you've been smoking. I don't know a thing about DAoC, but when exactly did you come into EQ? The past two and a half months?

Actually improves players?

...

Gotta be kidding.

looks nice and clean im looking forward to it even if it is nearly a year after it was supposed to come out. also i would beg to differ when you say that EQ isnt at the top anymore. EQ is still at the top, of all the people i have seen leave eq to play another MMORPG ive heard of at least 70% of them end up getting bored of (insert new mmorpg here) and come back to EQ and start a new and have fun. and exactlly what do you think is at the top? say DAOC or AO and ill laugh my *** off.
Mana

It would also be nice if they set up a mana bar on the team health box.
few visable changes

Except for new pictures and new boarders, the only thing I see different is a book icon ont he bottom of the 8 spell jewels and an ability to have separate chat boxes.

I wonder what they are doing besides what they have shown us cause so far this isn't that different from the current interface. I am looking forward to raid chatboxes tho.

I've never played DAoC, so I can't write about EQ allegedly stealing elements of the new interface from that game. That being said, I do like the way this is looking. It has a fresher look, and I like being able to (more easily) split different messages into separate windows. At the same time, it's similar enough to the existing interface such that it won't take long at all to get used to it. I would assume that the windows can be moved anywhere on the screen as was introduced with SoV. (I like having my chat window at the top of the screen, not the bottom.)

I can do without a numerical representation of mana. Casters have a pretty good grasp on their mana consumption and replenishment. As a previous poster suggeste, having a health bar for pets would be welcome (I hate using /pet report health, hotkey or not).

Numerical Mana
# Jun 22 2002 at 5:26 PM Rating: Excellent
I sure do hope they make a change and add a numerical version of mana. Its long overdue and quite unfair to casters trying to outfit themselves, trying to quesstimate how much mana either 7int or 25 mana really gives them, ie wich is the better item. Melee have had this luxury with HP forever and i feel many casters would agree that they would like to see their Mana in a number form. For deciding gear and also knowing their limitations. I mean in the spellbook spells have always had a numerical value assigned to them for casting, so why hasnt it ever been displayed numerically ?

I wouldnt mind numerical xp either. At least id be able to see the number going up instead of the manifying glass I currently have to use to see if the blue bar shifted at all.
RE: Numerical Mana
# Jun 23 2002 at 3:13 AM Rating: Decent
I admit there would be nice perks to being able to see exp in numbers...but if you have that then EQ becomes a game for people with big calculators. compare mob hits points/mob damage output vs mob exp+dungeon zone bonus + #people in group x exp bonus for full group - exp sucked up by pets = ?? well I don't know what it equals but it isn't fun anymore. I think the last addition of blue line to the exp bar was just the right balance between not enough info for players and a calculator game
