How to get out of Dead Zones

If you encounter a dead zone, zone back out to get out of the zone ASAP! You will be d/c however when you come back you should be at the back in a safe zone.

If you are logging into a dead zone, like my case was Bastok Markets, run for another zone or MH. You are still able to transmit data to the server just not receive it. Sucks if you are low level in a high aggro zone because you maybe dead as you run. Once you zone to say MH like I did, you will probably d/c, just log again in and try exiting to another part of the city. Expect to be d/c too. This is a platform independent issue. I play on PC and PS2. I had my WHM (PS2) teleport to Konchstat Highlands only to discover it a was a dead zone and I ran my WHM to Valkrum Dunes, go figure this was a safe zone for me. Anyways, I had to log in like 2 times running to Valkrum Dunes. Sad part was I running to raise a LS mate who died in KH zone line to VD.

As of yesterday's patch on fixing "" icon, I could enter now Bastok Markets. However, now other LS members are having the same issue I had. BTW I did not cold-reset my router (I did power it off/on Saturday like 20 times), I do plan on reprogramming it for the wireless networks I am running.

My conclusion to this issue that SE did something to data packets sent when you zone to certain areas thus causing the dead zone. This change in the packet is what causes the router/switch connection to hiccup and stop receiving packets.

Yeah, well that is good advice, it is still impossible for some of us to do. In zones that are timed (such as Airships) and zones that require an NPC to exit (such as Heavens Tower, Airship departure platforms, etc), you are not able to do this because no NPCs spawn and you're D/C'd before the Airship lands. I'm stuck on an airship and I tried to time it so that I would log in while the Airship is at a port, but no matter when I log in, the Airship is ALWAYS LEAVING JEUNO.

So, no matter what, if you're on an Airship or in a zone that requires an NPC to leave, you are stuck until SE decides to make this top priority and stop shifting the blame to other ridiculous sources such as ISPs and our own PCs. Based on this "customer service" of shedding "hate" off of their company and onto other companies is terrible and is forcing me to contemplate quitting for good.

GREAT JOB SE, BRAVO!!! /sarcasm

Ouch, you are stuck in a Deja Vu episode if you are always seeing the airship leave. That has got to be annoying. I am wondering if you can get on it or it sounds like you are stuck in an infinite loop.

I can confrim that the update did not fix connectivity issues that arent SE's fault, that dont exist and that GM's cant help with and shouldn't be called about.

Last night me and several others from my Linkshell had real difficulty in zoning into hall of the gods, a zone that only hours before i checked that i could enter.

This has never happened before, and only started since the last update, quite how this can be blamed on ISP's is quite beyond me.

If i phone my ISP about it they speak to me like im quite mad, which is understandable, "I cant zone in FFXI" makes very little sense to them, seeing as i can connect to every website in the known world without any issues at all.

Also a number of people are still unable to use the search function and Auction House, thankfully this has not happened to me yet.

But then, i sit here complaining, at least they fixed the "" icon thing, that has really been affecting my gameplay.

SE well done for charging everyone for a full months service when some people havent been able to play for 5 days, sure beats working for a living.

Hmm I think it's kinda funny (yet sucks for people of course) that they cant access certain areas without d/cing. Personally Ive had some members wanting to party with me but havent been able to access the areas (which sucks for both us). But as for me , Ive been able to connest and access ALL areas just fine. So mabe its just something that only effects certain people, Because I have friends just like me where there completely 100% fine. Hope they find out what the peoblem is and fix it, But if they dont then I really needed do research on which areas are effected and check to see if theres any monsters of value in the area that I could take advantage of. ^_*

Oh and goodluck to anyone whos facing the DEAD Zone error (I really do hope they fix it soon for you guys)
hmm kinda funny
# Mar 13 2007 at 5:15 PM Rating: Decent
Try zoning into every area in the game then tell me you're 100% fine. Because I have LS members that claimed they're unaffected then zoned into an area they rarely visit and D/C'd. So until you and everyone else visits every zone in the game to double check, a D/C may be hiding right around the corner in a Promy, Dynamis, Sea/Sky, Airship, cities, dungeon, etc.

I thought I would only D/C in Batallia. Some friends said they're stuck on an airship and I thought, well I've ridden to Sandy and Kazham after the update w/ no problems, so I'm good there. Then I hop on a Jeuno to Bastok Airship and get D/C'd.

So don't claim with 100% certainty that you are unaffected until you have visited everywhere.

Well still stuck on airship riding around looking very stupid all alone.
Is SE going to fix this issue?
Im trying to uninstall and reinstall to see if it fixes it seeing how I have alot of time to ride around airship with no stop in site.
FYI im very upset that I pay to play this game and cant.
Anyone have any luck doing this?

# Mar 13 2007 at 5:09 PM Rating: Decent
I'm contemplating doing this, too. But, with my luck it'll take like 12 hours to re-download all updates upon my re-installation. And by that time tomorrow, SE may have fixed the problem (I'm not holding my breath), which would just mean I did all that just to have all my macros and settings erased >.<.

But please post on this board if/when you reinstall FFXI and let us know if that helps!

Not to pick on anyone for what they claim they know or don't know but I know that I can log into POL fine and perform any task with no issues. Since that is a step between me and the game then basic troubleshooting says start there and quit trying to blame local ISP's for the problem. If the hand off from POL to the game server is toast then it's SE's problem and they refuse to acknowledge there is anything wrong. If a router is hosed then I seriously doubt that it's all the various routers associated with the various ISP's. As for SE help saying give someone else your account information that goes totally against all published policies they have ever posted and sounds like total BS that could lead to massive account theft.

SE never told me to have someoen else log my character in to move them. It was an idea that my friend and I came up with and found out that is works. I shared the idea with my LS and everyone else seems to be having success with it as well. I do not recommend giving your information to other people unless you trust them. In my case the person who moved me is my RL friend so I trusted them.

Here here! Please will se actually admit its a problem at thier end instead of blaming 2000 routers across the country. Also the patronising GMs inquiring as to whether i actually know how a router works r wholely unhelpful. I dont need to know how a router works, all i need to know is that it is working fine ... hang about maybe its a gilseller conspiracy after the last update. Perahps theyve turned themselves into little cyberspace gremlins and r now living inside these thousands of routers across the world preventing FFXI access. In which case i apologise se it really isnt ur fault.

I have downloaded every update for the past 6 months without a timeout of any kind, including this latest one. I d/l'd the update at like 2 pm EST before the servers were back up and experienced no difficulties at all. Sorry I didn't post this as a response to your question, but for some reason whenever I try to respond to someone else for the past hour I have received a 404 error >.<

Has anyone tried reinstalling and reupdating thier installation without experiencing the timeout during the update process? Of course this theory will go out the window if someone can post that they updated 100% without a timeout and are still having this issue.

For most BST-type NMs, it works like that, as long as he has a pet, he won't charm you, but if his pet's dead when he goes to use Familiar, then he'll still charm you.

Of course, I can't say for sure... There's a few mobs that can have multiple pets (Xolotl, Dynamis Orcs, etc...), but for the most part, actual BST-type mobs won't attempt to charm you unless their pet's already dead.

Other than the post about the dead zone. Im interested about why they're changing the level thing for warrior's mufflers. The lv75 piece before was Warrior's Lorica which dropped in Dyn Xarca. So what, are they gonna make warrior's Lorica drop in Jeuno and make it lv72 now?
Change of issue here lol
# Mar 13 2007 at 10:35 AM Rating: Decent
You misunderstand. The lhe last patch accidentally changed mufflers from 72 to 75. So curently, before today's maintenance but after the last one, WAR has two level 75 AFs. This maintenance will fix mufflers so that they are 72 again. Lorica will wtill be in Xarc, level 75.

I'm curious to know if Pallas' ability to summon pets will replace his ability to charm you. I started camping giants for Alkyoneus' spawn item, and I noticed several people would crowd around parties killing Pallas, and wait for someone to get charmed. At that point, the group of people would instantly kill that person, and celebrate said death.

It's one thing to legitimately lose a battle with a NM on your own accord, and lose claim; it's another thing for someone to massacre you while you're helpless, and then steal your mob.

By the wording of the sentence though, it seems like summoning pets will be added alongside Charm.

I just thought it was funny since they fixed it the next day we had a convo about it. It's kinda nice that SE is on the ball with these things now, although I'm not sure if this will fix the R0 issue I'm sure they're trying to find a resolution to it.

Although I do agree that it would be harder to fix the dead zone problem. Its also possible that it could be fixed by this update, but they just don't want to say anything as that would be admitting it was something wrong on their end. Honestly though I could care less as long as its fixed. :) I have faith they haven't given up on us yet.

You fix the defects you know how to fix--you can't fix the defects you don't know how to fix.

I suppose SE should save them all until they have the "dead zone" fix, but only because the average fan (see below) doesn't understand software development and that defects can be easy (the "" icon not shoing up after the zone) or complicated (i.e. "dead zone").

Defects are easy to fix when:
-the are 100% reproducible
-there was a change in the area of the code that's now broken
-there are no race conditions that cause it
-when causally one thing is related to the next and it can be deduced
-after you have root cause the fix will not effect other areas of the code

I can't say for certain, but from my perspective (10 years of doing precisely these sorts of things) this does not appear to be an "easy to fix" defect.

...and even if you want to argue that SE DOESN'T care about their customers they do obviously care about money and the sheer amount of money they're having to pay in OT and extra GM time is a lot of motivation for them to get the issue resolved.

Putting more people on the job doesn't help either--you want 2-3 of your experts in the suspected code area working on it. 9 women can't have a baby in one month, and 4 men can't drive a car from LA to Vegas in an hour.

...but, go on whining, SE isn't aware of the issue and I'm sure the extra complaining will help them address the issue faster while making you appear intelligent.

To update my previoues message. I just got off the phone with POL, and they have informed me that the zoning problem does not lie in their software. According to POL, the problem lies in the connection that is made from the US to the server in Japan. Therefore, they are unable to fix the problem, and are not able to determine when the problem will be fixed. The best way to correct the problem when you get stuck is to have someone else log in your character and move it. Have had alot of success with this and so have the rest of the members in my LS that have gotten stuck. POL notes that most providers are having difficulties, and that Verizon and AOL seem to be the only one unaffected. Not sure if POL's explanation is true or not, but hey, the fix that I explained has worked for me and my LS, so good luck.

Bye Bye /SAM for the most part. Seems they caught that little glitch fast. No more invincible drks to party with or solo. Looks they either released this update pre-maturely or had a big *** brain fart. Its like they had to meet the update deadline but wasnt done with it and just fixing it as they go post update release.

A great update, but came with more problems then anyone would want. Again, they are addressing the issue and correcting the problems. /clap SE

The dead zone issue and these fixes are two completely seperate problems that are handled by two completely different groups of people. You don't stop one group of people from making fixes while the other works on the dead zone issue. It just doesn't work that way, it would be innefficient if it did.

After talking to some people who play on different servers, the R0 glitch could very well be within the software downloaded to us. There is no way SE could test each person's individual software (it really does depend on which sever you connected to to download your update) and they would be correct in saying that it is not happening on their end, test servers, etc. I do believe if the problem was with the hand off between the backbone and the Japanese DNS then this problem might be more random as one person goes from zone to zone. So this update today might fix the problem but they would never admit that they made this mistake.

The DEAD ZONE - run to another zone to get out of it. That is how I discovered several dead zones to my characters. I have one running on PC and the other PS2 and both suffer the problem where entering a zone I get Rx0. At first I thought great the update on the 3/9 did something but I do not know now. I check with RoadRunner and they said no maintenance (O.o?) was done that day. So something glitched. My PC was on 24/7 connected where as my PS2 was shutdown. Seems oddly that maintenance done after the update screwed this up and SE still says everything is 100% A.O.K.
