Take your shot at Goldfish Scooping!

With Summerfest kicking into high gear across various lands, it appears that the merchants have been getting into the festive spirit as well, offering various new items. Those familiar with the customs of different lands say that the equipment the merchants sell may be of an Eastern origin. Curiously, the goods closely resemble the items used in an event known as Goldfish Scooping. Goldfish Scooping is a traditional game often played during the summer months. People use fragile "scoops" to skim the water in order to catch as many brilliantly colored goldfish as they can--before the paper on the scoops rips. Trading goldfish to a merchant will earn you points based on the type of fish you catch. These points can be exchanged for a plethora of exciting Summerfest items. So if you hear one of these peddlers, you know what to do! Go and give Goldfish Scooping a try! Who knows, you might just get hooked! The NPCs will be at: West Ronfaure G-10 South Gustaberg E-8 East Sarutabaruta H-8 Rabao F-7 -About reopening the "Test of Courage" event The Test of Courage event was brought to a close as the Goldfish Scooping event opened. However, due to the popularity of the event, we have decided to reopen it, and have the event run until the end of Summerfest. Take your best shot at both events, and above all, have fun! We apologize for the delay in announcing the end of the previous Test of Courage event, and any inconvenience we may have caused.

Can you still get the tunics? And if so where can you get them.
I saw a few people running around with really pretty tunics and I'd really like to get one if its possible.

I scooped goldfish for about an hour. It was an enjoyable break from 'Duning' and buying and selling on the AH. But...

The no-real-reward thing was a little bit of a bummer. Not much, and those beads look useful perhaps. So why when there were 5 people scooping in Knightwell, they were all too busy to say anything to me or even answer my questions? I can't believe you'd make a scooping bot...

I've been saving up my years of fortune (up to 150 now) because I noticed when I hit around 100, the guy said (You are nearing Nirvana...). Does that mean anything or did I just miss him saying that everytime I turned in fish?

Spirit Masques?

What do the Spirit Masques do..?
RE: Spirit Masques?(And other fishing rewards)
# Aug 02 2004 at 7:35 PM Rating: Good
Spirit Masques(ie, 50 point mystery prize) are fireworks, they make a sort of kabuki-ish mask apear over your face, and a gray flame apear over your head, its a cool affect, but a lot feel its not worth the 50 years of "fortune"

30 point flavored drops are the candy flavored drops, all except the black one gives 5 points to a particular stat, except the black one, its an insta-warp when used. not sure on the times for each of those(ie, how long stat lasts, and reuse timer of drops) so feel free to fill in those details

as for the other prised, the 25 point "large fans are probably easy enough to guess, their the same as the ones gained from the "test of Courage" events

the 15points-fireworks, is a random number of a random firework(excluding the masques and fans i would assume)

the others are pretty self explanitory,
Good luck scooping, hunting, or whatever else you may be doing

I really enjoy goldfish scooping. Your little character bends over and holds out the scoop and then moves it slowy through the water and looks genuinely sad when the scoop breaks, he closes his eyes and bows his head. I think its funny. It's a great idea. I was wondering, I didn't join until after Easter, but were any of the other events as fun as this one?

well, even tho this is off subject, you can obtain the parts through various garrison events and BCNMs. the purpose to the parts is if you get 1 of each you can put them together and have a "mannequin" furniture item in your moghouse that gives 5-7(i forget for sure) storage slots. also you can model armor on it in any combination regardless of job/level requirements.

as far as the topic is concerned, i'm just happy to see that they are bringing the moogles back for the first part of the quest since i was offline for a while and didnt get back on till the last day or so of the quest availability ^^;;
now i have another chance to get my yukata ^_^

I think everyone looks too deep into this, really i mean summerfest is just supposed to be about fun right? The fireworks the small quests just a since of appreciation to the people that play. Square doesnt want to give you prizes that are worth 100k or more for the simple fact they dont want it to be a greed factor that you do these quests. Think about being a level 30 or 40 char/job and doing the Courage quest going into ifrit's cauldron or some other place that you still wont see for another 20 or 30 levels. I mean it's a nice little bonus to check those places out. Just don't get so wrapped up in what the prizes are and just have fun, it's SE's way of saying thanks for playing.

I certainly don't think that we should be getting super expensive items (though the people who bazaar colored drops for 20K are sure trying hard!) I by and large agree with the above posters. However I did hope there would be some items that were as "cool" as the previous events. Sure, eggs and moogle belts and treat staff/horror head are not UBER by any means. But they are definitely cool!

The eggs are awesome items- they give you a little boost. And by using the ranged slot they do it in a way that doesn't cost many jobs much of anything. The moogle belts ain't much- but they really are a good item for a starting job! The trick/treat staff are PERFECT event items in my opinion. They are really, really cool- but only in very limited circumstances. Same deal with the horror head- I mean, the horror head could get you (as far as I can tell) 100% unlimited BLM nuking in a very narrow set of circumstances. With the right planning it could be the key to pulling off some cool stuff. Anyway- I don't think there is that kind of item from Summerfest (unless we discover that spirit masques drop hate or prevent undead agro or something). Though I admit that the drops are pretty cool and have their place.

Am I comfortable with just having fun and getting a fly set of threads? Sure. Would I love to see the same kind of well designed "very slight edge" or "awesome in limited circumstance" item? Yes.

This my first post, but I felt so strongly about this I had to say something. And that is: Summerfest was great, and I am truly sad for the people who feel that they didn't get anything. I got tons of things even if those things weren't tangible. I met people I had never met before, I went to places I've never been before, and I got a swanky yukata to boot. I loved this event and I was and am grateful that Squenix took the time to put it on. For those of you who don't feel this event was worth it, don't do it. And may I suggest the Rubix cube or perhaps quadratic equations for fun, as apparentlly your idea of fun is numbers games. Then again you'll probably just take your lvl 60 character and go camp Leaping Lizzy for the 28th time. I apologize for the little bit of venom at the end of my message. I just get frustrated with the attitudes of some players.

Amen! I think it's funny how everyone seems to think that they should get a 100k+ item from these quests. I use to play Everquest and IF we ever had an event it was super crappy, at least SE is taking the time to make events. Just enjoy what you got and quit complaining that you're not getting a hairpin or leaping boot from an event.

I truly agree with this post this game is really fun and all you get if fireworks which don't really sell but all in all it is cool to get them. Also instead of saying Congratulations everytime someone levels up now you can set off a firework which I think is more cool.

Im glad to see that people in this world see that. People are so obsessed with making money! Why do you need to? A game have fun im saying, Just because they stuff dont sell like god items doesnt mean that its crap. I had alot of fun times goldfish scooping just messing around and talking with others. If this is all about money im seriously missing this point! I had fun doing the quest with my friends and aactually mad some new ones in the process. THAT is what i think that SE was trying to do!

Don't know much about the game, do you? Many rare/ex items cannot be sold at the AH, the drops are among them.
Drops
# Aug 02 2004 at 1:30 PM Rating: Decent
The drop colors are NOT random. I got one and received a clear drop (INT +5). I believe I was on my RDM4/BLM2 at the time, doing some scooping in between fighting. Next time I tried to buy another drop with my WHM9/BLM4 I got "You can only obtain one clear drop at a time" as they're Rare items. So I'm pretty sure it's based on some factor... Also, I haven't been able to find these drops at the AH, I've only seen them sold in bazaars. Anyone know anything about this? The only other items I know of that can't be sold at the AH are mannequin parts, and they have a storyline reason.

Ahhhh as i was goldfish scooping and trying my luck out i had enough to trade in for 2 drops. The first drop was purple and the next i got was purple but i could not obtain it. As i pondered on the possibilities, i noticed the day. It was purple... SO what my theory is the color day is the colored drop.

I can't believe that we had a week to get a speical tunic to do goldscooping and then goldscooping comes along and the prize is basically worthless (i mean improve goldscooping result ability what's the point?)... im a ps2 player that got the game after easter so this is the first event for me to get a cool item which the tunic is but i was thinking like everyone was saying we'd get a goldfish in our moghouse or something to boast about a few months down the road.. 2 weeks is a long event you would think it would take 2 weeks to get the grand item of the summer lol im sorry im frustrated just a little disappointed :?

I looked up the colored drops on here and they aren't too bad. depending on the color they raise the stats +5
they are like a food item and i read on one of the forums that they last around 60min. i've got a PLD and a WHM that i lvl (among lots of other jobs... i get bored easily) and the +5 VIT and +5 MND wouldn't be so bad i think.
also the black drop works like warp. which is very helpful when you are trapped in yhoater and you have no way back >.>
just some info i gathered off of here. o... some say they can be sold for like 10k... i have yet to prove that tho =\

I heard someone saying (in game) that you can get a special item for 1000 points. Not sure if it's true or not. I heard it was some sort of Rare/Ex equipment, but that's all they were saying.
Mystery Boxes

It certainly seems as though the contents of the "Mystery Box" are somewhat less than a mystery anymore. Everyone seems to get 12 Spirit Masques every time they spend fifty years of fortune. And of course, everyone has their theory, everyone has their not-so-old-wives' tale, something that'll get you a different item in the Mystery Box, but this sounds an awful lot like thinking something would happen if you flew in a straight line around the world 300 times in Final Fantasy VII - nothing. It seems to me that if nobody has recieved a different item thus far from the Mystery Boxes, one does not exist. But, hey, if anyone wants to see what happens if you accept the prize with 800 years of fortune still in your possession, do so and give us the findings. :)

For the record, it seems to me this event is designed for the aspects of simple fun that it presents, and I fail to see why we can't simply take it for face value istead of demanding some kind of permanent reward for the minimal effort.

Euhm you say people only want to get prizes if they have some nice stats like easter eggs?

Well can't say those aggs are that good, they are nice but really 1-2% extra hp isnt that much if you are a taru.
At lvl 30 you only get like 3-4 hp extra life...

If they want to give good prices they should give good bonusses for cities who are first or second ranked.
RE: good rewards?
# Aug 02 2004 at 12:41 PM Rating: Good
Every hit point helps, if you are down to 150 HP, and get critical attacked for 150..you'll wish you had that +1 HP for sure (and yes this does happen). Also, the +1 vit is extremely useful for any job that will take hits (Nin, Pld, War, Drg occassionally and Mnk). Granted it could be better, but its pretty useful for only taking up your ammo slot, and since theres really nothing better for non-Rng/Thf's (maybe Nin, it depends on whether they want to use other things like shurikens) until higher levels.
