Star Citizen hits $1million on Kickstarter

10 days remain on Kickstarter with total funding nearing $3m

Ever since Chris Roberts re-emerged on the gaming scene last month with the announcement of his ambitious online game Star Citizen, the entire gaming community has been excited. He was a genre-defining designer in the 90's with titles like Wing Commander, and gamers young and old are anxious to see what he has in mind for this generation.

As with many recent independent game development projects, Roberts decided to go with crowd funding. Originally, the Star Citizen campaign launched with a home-grown funding site, but it hit some technical snags and was down quite a bit. Roberts Space Industries quickly launched a Kickstarter campaign to finish out their funding, and it has gone swimmingly ever since.

Yesterday, the Kickstarter campaign passed the USD$1,000,000 mark, which doubled their original goal of USD$500,000. This means the total funding they've raised all together is very near USD$3,000,000!

"We’d like to thank our incredible community for helping us hit $1 million in pledges today through the Kickstarter campaign. That’s twice our original Kickstarter goal and it brings the combined campaign total very close to $3 million! It’s incredible and humbling and we promise we’re going to put that money to good use, building the game you’re dreaming about."

By hitting the million-dollar mark, RSI has introduced an even larger player ship, the Idris class corvette - a powerful capital ship for you and your crew to pilot around the galaxy!

Star Citizen isn't vaporware or some dream on a designer's napkin. Roberts already has much of the design done and tech built. This thing is happening.

There are still 10 days left in the Kickstarter funding, so if you want in on what is sure to be one of the most intriguing online game launches in the next few years, head on over to Kickstarter and kick in a few bucks!
