SOE Begins Restoration of Services

UPDATE, May 14, 7:15p.m. EDT: SOE has slowly begun restoration of their services.

SOE - Restoration Announcement
SOE - Welcome Back Program
SOE - Recent Updates

SAN DIEGO, May 14, 2011 - Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced today that restoration of its game services will begin today. The phased restoration will include the return of nearly all of SOE's portfolio of online games, the reinstatement of SOE's game forums and websites, and added functionality to require players to reset their passwords.

For details on the hacker attack that has kept SOE down since May 2 and compromised the personal information of players, check out SOE's brief FAQ and all of our previous coverage. See this article for the May 12th news on the "Make Good" program details.

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

Game-specific May 11th updates:

EverQuest: Players with an active house will be credited one month of upkeep costs and the inactive period will be extended from 90 to 150 days.

EverQuest II: All houses requiring rent will have one month added free to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

Free Realms: The Free Realms birthday event and the New Member Bonus Bonanza will be extended to give everyone a chance to participate in them. Don’t worry about your farms; they’ll be taken care of too!

Star Wars Galaxies: All Galactic Civil War point decay has been suspended and inactive citizen removal time temporarily increased by 14 days. Item and vendor expiration timers have also been increased by 14 days.

Vanguard: One day for each day lost will be added to every player's Upkeep Bank to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

SOE will not communicate
# May 12 2011 at 12:38 PM Rating: Decent
www.soe.com The message they posted is careful to not say there will be communication with their customers during the process. They will investigate and fix the issue is their only declaration

It is as much a matter of culture as it is anything to do with what Westerners expect as "service". We have seen organizations and entities operating in the East who take great strains to prevent information from being released. In the West we're accustomed to lots of information - lies, speculation and truth.

SOE has illustrated its unwillingness to communicate with its customers for a decade.

Companies have their networks attacked everyday. This was the largest online breach of private information in history. Epic fail on Sony's part no matter how many ways an "apologist" tries to slice it, they neglected security maintenance to keep their profits stable in a time of declining subscriptions.

I'll probably keep playing when they start the servers back up, none of this is "news" to me. I never thought SOE cared about me in the first place.

Why would you expect this occasion to be any different?

Are all of the players "insane"?

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results...

I would not even venture to guess at how many people are playing EQ that have quit in the past and came back.

The servers will come back online (when, we do not know, but they will). The players will continue to play and keep paying Sony no matter how how many are ******** today.

Did you not read that far in to my post? Just off and running the first moment you thought you saw something eh sparky?

I was making comment to the people who are expecting communication, it was a pragmatic approach to SOE's stance thus far. It is consistent with their organizational philosophy and people should accept it or cancel their accounts.

Don't worry about it too much. There have been events in the past that pissed off the players, ya some left, the majority came back.

I have been playing since 2000 and have seen it time and time again due to one reason or another.

There have been times I quit for whatever reason, boredom, money, grass greener on the other side, etc..

EQ is a unique game and people know it, that's why it has lasted so many years.

I for one will be back as soon as it comes back up.

I have seen the same thing over the last few years with SWG lots of people leave to try other games and they tend to return a year or so later as nothing has the same buzz that SWG has with crafting, space etc.

Even after 4.5yrs im getting to the point of thinking bout taking a break (not for another game just finances are getting tight) and this may be the nail in the coffin so to speak.

Wil give it another week or so to see what happens (Will sony/SOE live or die) lol

I would strongly suggest to them that they either update us earlier in the day, or give us a date that we can count on for services to be back up. I will say I have been playing eq since 1999, and despise most other MMO's but even I am thinking about saying PEACE SONY, all it would take for me not to do that, (and I am betting others feel the same) is some real information such as an actual TIME FRAME for which services can be expected. I only ask for what is fair.

So sad to hear all the people that want to quit.
I have been playing since 2004-- am just as upset as any one , but sony is doing all they can to fix it and keep it safe for us. If they spent their entire day briefing us they wouldn't get anything done. I plan to go back to playing as soon as EQ comes back up.
I hope it's soon and I hope the hackers get what 's coming to them .In jail for life with no computer would be a good punishment.

They don't need all their employees to spend their entire day briefing us. What they should do is have 1 employee, a PR guy whose job it is to do stuff like this anyway, to make one update a day, at the same time everyday (in the morning at 10am eastern would work just fine). That update should say:

- Do they have an ETA on when the servers will be up?
- If so, what is it?
- If not, do they have a ballpark guess?
- If not, do have have an ETA about when they will have an ETA?
- The minimum amount of time they know the servers will not be up.

I guarantee there is one high up individual in SOE who can answer all 5 of those questions all by himself, every single day. It would take him about 5 minutes to determine those answers, plus 5 minutes to trasnfer that information to the PR guy, plus 5 minutes for the PR guy to post that information on twitter.

Do that, and it's job well done for them in terms of treating their customers with respect and understanding. 2 employees, 15 minutes a day. No one else at SOE need be bothered or interrupted in their work.

I would like an ETA myself and failing that, an ETA for an ETA.

I do have a question for you. The nitpicker in me would like to know what you consider is the difference between an ETA and a ballpark guess?

I made that distinction mainly to preempt the posters who would reply to me (had I not made the distinction) saying something like, "but there is no way they can know the exact time for sure."

Also, although the letter E in ETA stands for estimated, I think most people (as do I) view ETA as being at least somewhat more accurate than just a rough ballpark guess. So what I'm asking for, to use different words, is "Do they have an accurate guess? Do they have an inaccurate but still educated guess? Do they know the minimum amount of time the servers will not be up?"

Well... I never thought it would happen, but after 12 loyal years of playing EQ with my wife and 2 kids (having held 4 paid accounts since 1999), we have come to a decision. Last night we all decided that $120 per month to Sony is no longer worth it to us. It's not the money, but we can't help feeling like they are spitting in our faces.

After well over a decade of diligent payments, the best this half-*** company can do is give an update at 7 PM each night telling us that the servers will not be up for the day which has already passed. I'm not retarded... and I'm almost certain (almost, mind you) that nearly half of the people that play EQ can say the same. Are we honestly supposed to just accept that BS? Seriously?!

I know that SOE is on the Pacific coast, so they are going by THEIR convenience, but I also know that less than 8% of their customers share that time zone. I'm just not impressed with a company which has the ability to predict the past. We all deserve MUCH more respect than Sony is giving us... we all do.

So, after 12 years and well over $25,000 later (we buy a TON of Station Cash stuff =), we have decided to leave EQ for good. SOE lost at least us four in this mess...

I'm sure this post will go ignored and never be read by SOE, but the decision was a big deal for us, at least, and I wanted to share it =)

<<< BTW, I'm not one of those people that wants ANYTHING for my inconvenience, nor do I blame SOE for anything more than their negligence in this matter... what we (like most people) are pissed off about is this pathetic lack of communication and for being treated like we are inconsequential garbage >>>

... and a long drawn out BUH BYE to you Sony...

Too bad your Zam account is still Mcogre. Medusa ne-Wagina is so much more... provacative.

You know I've been there almost as long as you bud. I rolled up toons on E. Marr the day that server opened and transfered to Bristlebane and started grouping with you in 2001 or so. The only time I held my account in abeyance was those two years I was on third shift. They've already charged my account this month, but come May 31st, assuming the network is still down as reported on msnbc, I'll be phoning in that cancellation.

I'll be in touch if i find anything other than M&M7 and Bard's Tale to scratch our game itch.

My account was actually charged the day after this happened... the 3rd I think, and when I called, they said that the 30+ days will be automatically added on, so basically, I still have like 2 1/2 months already paid for. I think it was there way of saying "HAHAHA I don't think so, pal... you're not going anywhere until WE fuggin say so!"

So I suppose I'm kinda sucked into it, but the problem is, if this lasts much longer, I won't have that unscratchable itch anymore =\

Thanks Eva =) I know what you mean... when the Walls of Slaughter was the baddass zone to be in and the level cap was 70, I made my cleric 8-year-old son play hooky from school and miss a math test because his Big Ogre Warrior daddy needed to ding 70! I WAS SO CLOSE... what choice did I have?! He and my daughter still got straight A's and are now in college, so I can still sleep at night. I took several days off of work so they could get their epic (McOgre /flex).

I remember killing The Oracle for the first time, and being the very first person on the Bristlebane Server to wear his robe, back when the level cap was 50. Beleive me, I have all the memories! It's very very sad, but how long did they expect us to wait without an intelligent update? I think that's the keyword there... intelligent. If servers are up by the weekend, who knows, maybe we will get our bug to play back.

But think of it this way, if you are a smoker that was laid up in the hospital for something, how many days would you have to be in there before you decided that starting back up wouldn't be worth it? Poorly worded perhaps, but I've been without EQ for quite awhile now... maybe it's a good excuse to break the habit... =\

Yeah I really find that the longer this goes the less and less I want to play Everquest. Most people here I'm sure have been here for years, through the good times and the bad. Maybe it was just good timing, but I just don't feel like playing this game anymore, and I especially don't want to give my information to a company who has proven that it cannot protect it (nor does it respect privacy: see SecuRom).

Don't think I'll even be looking at "Everquest Next" or whatever they end up calling it. Shame really.

My God, can you imagine the downtime even after (IF that is) the servers come back up? How many emergency security updates will there be in the proceeding months?

Yeah, I think I'll go back to being secure and just find another game from a better company =)

These days fans are hungry for any word from Sony Online Entertainment, which has been mostly quiet following the hacking intrusion that required Sony to take down its MMOs on May 2nd. While we have received some news out of the company, unfortunately today's word is a sad one: John Blakely, SOE's vice president of development, has left the company to join Zynga.

Kotaku reports that Blakely's LinkedIn resumé mentioned that he left SOE in April to become a general manager at Zynga in Austin. SOE has confirmed his departure, thanking Blakely for his "passion and leadership," and stating that he has been replaced by Lorin Jameson. Jameson was the executive director of development at SOE's Austin studio.

In addition to being SOE's VP of development, Blakely filled the role of executive producer for DC Universe Online and senior producer for EverQuest II during his stay at the company.

Woot... all these RL skills just keep building. Who knew there was a "Cleaning" skill? I've gone from 10 to 146! Baking skill has jumped from 170 to 198. Brewing is still only around 25 (it's easier to level that up in-game). Alcohol tolerance... well, that's been maxed for a while now anyway. I miss the in-game friends (Sinn, Tiri, Max... /wave!!) Changed a few passwords, but that's about the extent of how this whole debacle might have affected me. From the news that's gotten out, any other information is available to anyone with a facebook account (I wasn't playing in Europe several years ago, so no loss of CC data). /shrug not that big of a deal to me.

As far as the angry people... the hackers did this, and it's mean. Sony's lost/is losing millions of $$, so go ahead and keep beating them up, gawd... And remember, mean people suck. Mean people suck, and don't finish.

If a bank was robbed, and it was later discovered that there was no locks on the outside doors, no locks on the vault, no video cameras and no night watchman, one might say they were negligent. Conspiracy theorists might go so far as to say they were complicit.

It's just as much their fault as it is the hackers. Having big time stuff (like 6 MMORPG's) on the internet without even having a firewall in place, as has been reported in many places, is so bad, so awful, it makes it's own case for the board of directors not performing due diligence in safeguarding customer information and negligent complicity.

There are a lot of things being reported. Most of what is being reported is what others have reported. Most of the information out there is tainted in some way. It is almost impossible to separate the garbage from the good information.

Do I "think" that SOE screwed up? Yes, I do. I "think" they were effing up in cadence. Do I have any real proof of that? Not really, it is just a gut feeling I get from the second hand accounts of second hand accounts of second hand accounts that are available to me. The difference between you and I, is that I know I am basing my opinion on rumors.

Did you happen to read the security expert's written statement for Congress? In his written statement he essentially stated his information about Sony's systems was second hand.

Did the news report that you linked happen to mention that slight discrepency or did they gloss it over?

Reported by the article you linked:
'... wherein he wrote, "Sony was running software that was badly out of date, and had been warned about that risk."'

The full sentence found in the PDF file (that they linked):
"Presumably, both companies are large enough that they could have afforded to spend an appropriate amount on security and privacy protections of their data; I have no information about what protections they had in place, although some news reports indicate that Sony was running software that was badly out of date, and had been warned about that risk."

Notice the small difference?

This is either an example of sloppy news reporting, or an example of editorial news reporting.

Yes I did read the PDF and I read the testimony he gave to congress.

One was a prepared written document to be handed in as evidence, the other is a verbal statement he made after the document was prepared and after he learned more information on what happened. Your point?

Once again, this is not the only place reporting it. As also clearly stated in the article, it was posted on a Sony intranet before it was leaked to the world two weeks later.

What more evidence do you want?

So to re-iterate,
1> He handed in written testimony.
2> A member of the investigation team read that line.
3> They asked him what he now knew about it.
4> He replied on information he learned since the printed document was prepared.

This sequence of events starts at 00:54:15 in the video btw

No. More like:

So to re-iterate,
1> He handed in written testimony.
2> A member of the investigation team read that line.
3> They asked him what he now knoew about it.
4> He responded pretty much the same as he did in his written testimony with the addition of where he gleaned his information from. (In other words he stated in his written testimony that his information was second hand and he stated in his oral testimony his information was second hand.)
5> Everybody that reported on his testimony, conviently skips the whole second hand disclaimer.
6> It becomes common knowledge that Stafford's information is first hand knowledge.

Listen, I am not saying Sony is blameless in this whole matter. I believe they will legally carry some of the blame once the various investigations are complete. My problem is that some people have charged, convicted and built the scaffold before the Bailiff has even said "Here ye. here ye. This court is now in session."

exactly what I have been attempting to point out!!
soe down time
# May 12 2011 at 8:26 AM Rating: Decent
ive played eq off and on since 2003(org one)..i tried eqlive(eq2)off and on hum in the last 7 yrs..i started on eq extened last nov.

soe is a multi million dollar company..and im sure this mth of lost
revenue is hurting them..

i stoped my payed sub of extened 2 mths ago because of all the problems
theyve been having since hum feb 1011..the straw that broke the camels back was...the wkend they had a triple ***** up
1. it was long wkend supose to be dbl xp for 3 days
2. moon light grotto event
3. city festival?

zoning, dcing and other irritating issues made playing usless

soe way of dealing with the problem...we have new expantion coming out
and were not gona do a dam thing till it is relesed....

well big suprize eq went boooomb when they did the relese... servers were down across all the eqs...but it was worse on extened because of it only having ONE SERVER...

soe couldnt be bothered to give paying players replacement days free.. or replace the 3 day dbl exp...

lol what a couple of 24hr dbl exp days... here and there thats just reallly bad public relations..the only thing large corps under stand is
a lose of cash..

lots of ppl blame the devs.. well the ceo.. managers ect... tell the dev when they can work and when they cant...its a money thing...you bet the ceo and managers dont lose their bonuses..when something goes screwy on any of the eqs

so by being cheap soe is getting a wake up call...they only way they understand... lose of cash..

i could go on saying wtf why didnt they keep upgrading their security..so on and so forth...

so it says it was a playstation3...that alowed the hack..who makes it
oh soe makes it...

any how yap yap yap....lol soe offers PAYING SUBS.. a free aka replacement 30days plus...1 day for every day its down..

since it is going to be down for atlest 30days...so guess PAYING SUBS
will get 60 days free..well well guess they finaly got it right

now they are going to pay ppls houseing bills for what 90 to 120 days?
extened and eq2..rent too

when servers are down soe SHOULD be giving payed subs REPLACEMENT DAYS
thats why i cancelled my sub..soe knows when its down and whom pays.. not a hard thing to do but they went on the CHEAP !!..hoping know one would knowtess

ive been playing mmo for over 15yrs..i understand programs go nuts here and there.. but GIVE ME BACK THE DAYS ITS DOWN..or you dont get MY CASH

if i dont go to work i dont get payed why the hell should you..soe

so now soe has lost millions of dollars to learn a lesson on
NOT BEING CHEAP..

ya hackers love to mess crap up.. some times well alot more now they do it to get info to make money...i guess soe is the first to learn the hard way ... dont be CHEAP with your programs..pay and treat your dev well and keep them close...CAUSE YOUR GONA NEED THEM WHEN ALL HELL BREAKS LOSE...im sure lots of the dev and programers warned soe about this kinda CRAP...long befor it happend

sigh oka enoff im off to find some thing else to play for the mth..

at this point, those of us who are still watching these updates deserve better than just "We are offline today". F! That. If anyone has successfully cancelled their accounts via phone... please share how. I am now considering it since their updates are lame.

Yes, you can cancel the accounts over the the phone. It should be easy to search through Google.

....when the servers come back (I mean when - think positively people!), anyone want to run a sweepstake on how long it will take before we get a nice MOTD from customer services, reminding us that "Account security is your responsibility and you should change your password frequently"?

If only they had taken their own advice....:)

So is this covered under terrorism attacks, can i be on the jury when they catch whoever, and is the death penalty available? I think that for some time to come, any hackers that go to trial are not going to have a friendly jury. It wont matter how minor the attack is, or how weak the protections, some one just pulled a sort of 9/11 on the relaxation of millions of people and as much as declared war, so they best be looking to hide. Expect Congress and other governments to up the efforts in this, because if they don't millions of voters will remember in the coming elections.
What a bizarre offer...

Umm what is the point to a free month of house maintenance in EQ2 when even if your home runs out of cash nothing happens you just add more and enter it.

Not to mention most if not everyone that has the current expansion has access to a free home anyway.

Also wouldn't this also indicate that the servers are still up which will cause all sorts of issues in SWG with harvesters, factories, homes, cities all requiring maintenance?
What a bizarre offer...

If I had to guess, I would say that the servers are up and disconnected from the internet.

It would be kind of difficult to make changes and test the changes without the servers being up.

With any luck SOE is at a stage where they can be testing games to find out where the security changes have broken the games so they can fix that.

My vendors have upto a year worth of maintenance with items due for relisting any time soon lol

According to the post on MSNBC.com
http://ingame.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/05/09/6611710-playstation-network-wont-resume-until-may-31-report

I'll check back then and see if I feel like renewing 6 accounts.

Sony said Tuesday that it is not committing to a a specific date for the network to be back up.

"I know you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored," said Seybold on the company's blog. "At this time, I can’t give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process."

PSN is free--- their MMORPGs are not. Unless there's more difficulty to restoring them than PSN for some reason, they will not likely be restored after PSN is.

PSN is a free service but I would bet all the money in both my IRAs that it generates more revenue than all of the SoE subs combined. You can buy music, movies, games, accessories, etc of PSN, and there is a PSN + feature that you can sub monthly to. I can guarantee that PSN is a higher priority and makes more money, and has more longevity potential.
