SOE Begins Restoration of Services

UPDATE, May 14, 7:15p.m. EDT: SOE has slowly begun restoration of their services.

SOE - Restoration Announcement
SOE - Welcome Back Program
SOE - Recent Updates

SAN DIEGO, May 14, 2011 - Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced today that restoration of its game services will begin today. The phased restoration will include the return of nearly all of SOE's portfolio of online games, the reinstatement of SOE's game forums and websites, and added functionality to require players to reset their passwords.

For details on the hacker attack that has kept SOE down since May 2 and compromised the personal information of players, check out SOE's brief FAQ and all of our previous coverage. See this article for the May 12th news on the "Make Good" program details.

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

Game-specific May 11th updates:

EverQuest: Players with an active house will be credited one month of upkeep costs and the inactive period will be extended from 90 to 150 days.

EverQuest II: All houses requiring rent will have one month added free to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

Free Realms: The Free Realms birthday event and the New Member Bonus Bonanza will be extended to give everyone a chance to participate in them. Don’t worry about your farms; they’ll be taken care of too!

Star Wars Galaxies: All Galactic Civil War point decay has been suspended and inactive citizen removal time temporarily increased by 14 days. Item and vendor expiration timers have also been increased by 14 days.

Vanguard: One day for each day lost will be added to every player's Upkeep Bank to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

and as for apologies are concerned-- how often does sony have to say 'we are sorry' for that to constitute an apology?

Do you also drop large cash donations at church thinking you can buy your way into forgiveness and therefore can do what ever sin you want , so long as you donate? =P

First of all-- you don't have updates because no one can tell you what they don't know-- especially sony-- unless you just want a pack of lies to soothe you-- most companies figure todays market is smarter than needing coddling. compensation??? the one day for every day it is down makes sure that no one loses anything money-wise. anything else is gravy. live with it.

if half of eq quits, sony will suffer a little money-wise, but i promise you there will be more than that on the game within a year of recovery. eq is immensely popular and after a week of guild wars i can see why.

you are beginning to sound like hostage holders with all the demand lists. give us a break please, because you aren't holding hostages and have nothing to bargain with on your demands.

actually i feel like i am reading a bunch of posts from 10 year olds. face it-- it takes a long time just to secure the system-- especially with a new cyber attack every time they think they have made some headway. after that, it takes awhile to repair the damage and get back online. we will be lucky to be playing by the end of the moth-- might take longer but who knows?

so-- in light of that-- would you rather hear "we'll be back up Monday" and then on monday-- "we'll be back up june 1" and then on june 1 we'll be back up on june 7" -- ect, ect, ect

It's ironic, I have played Sony's games from the beginning and will continue to play them. When WOW came out I tried it, didn't like it that much, but about 1 year ago and for every month following I have received an email from them saying my account MAY HAVE been hacked, the irony in is, I haven't even used that account in about 5 years and all the info on it is worthless.

So don't tell me that it hasn't happened to others, it just hasn't happened on this scale maybe, but it has happened.
It's Ironic - funny thing is...

I'd always thought the reports from Blizzard about hacks and data in the wild was more an Advertising PLOY to get me to come back and look. Second take was this IS a phishing communication for someone who 'naturally' followed up by clicking upon the embedded link in the email.

Something similar happened to me when I quit WoW. I cancelled my subscription and about a week later my account was frozen due to "Inconsistant account activity". I called Blizzard and told them the ONLY thing inconsistant is that I'm not playing right now. As of today, my account is still frozen. I don't know if anyone hacked my account. I did recieve an updated e-mail to say my items have been returned to me. So i guess somebody did get in and sold some of my stuff. The problem with all of this is that Blizzard sends the stuff back to you via in-game mail. That mail goes poof if not opened within 29 days (if memory serves me right)...well, i'm not about to start my subscription again just to get the mail. I let it rot. It's not worth it. You'd think the big, multi-billion dollar game companies would offer, for FREE an authenticator. After all, it protects tham as well as us.

They are NOT from Blizzard. I talked to a guy from there and he told me the hackers duplicate their websites. The only thing you can do is give more information when you open the e-mail. Don't do it.

He has stopped time for everyone and no ones aware of this. When this GOD will deem it time to release Norath from stasis, our characters will have not noticed anything wrong with the world.

Only the players feel this pinch.

Take this leisurely time to be creative on your own!

If Soe was caught with their pants down I believe they have since pulled them up and fastened their belts tighter. I wait patiently for EQ2 come back online. EQ is entertainment, not the same as the air we breath or the water and food we need. I have had ample time to fix what I can on my end of the line. I am educated enough to know that the internet is a risky place. I am dissapointed that this has happened, but I am not going to leave EQ2 and as far as updates go I don't want promises that the game will be up and then be dissapointed that it isn't on time. I would rather it be down and fixed right!! The free days for each one we are off line is more than generous and enough for me. The free month added to that is too much in my opinion. IF my (our) imformation has been compromised all the freebies in the world can't undo it.

Really? Sony is compensating us in cash. A free month, plus a day for every day the services are down. That is MORE than fair? Who th hell want a free 5 lvls? Eq is a game where THERE IS NO END! why why hurry up the lvl process and end up missing out on some really cool places? There is so much content any more that is just plain ignored. Th fact I'm not paying for the outage is good enough for me :)

More demands for some greedy folks.

First of all, most demands are way too demanding. Probably most or your characters aren't able to get most of these things in one day. I know surely not any of mine could!!!

Only compensation I would agree with is that any day they're off-line and not just during this event, that players get compensated 2 days for every day they are off. In addition to the 30 extra days they are giving us.

Right now, they've been off for a week. We should be getting 44 free days.

Of course, SOE is too greedy themselves and we might just end up with free in-game stuff that's totally useless.

Why the hell should anyone get something in-game for this? Everyone will pick up where they left off. Do you not understand this? No one will be any more ahead (or behind) than they were when the servers were last up. I, for one, would be utterly pissed off if I came back to the game and people were given a bunch of "free" stuff that the rest of us had to earn.

Just stop with the immature requests for freebies already. From now on, please only post if your IQ is ABOVE 85... NEW RULE...

First of all as I said above I agree with the no in game items. That said is one month plus one day for each day down really so generous? I would say barely covers it myself. A in game exp bonus week would not be over the top in any way as an apology and yes. Any other company would see the need to apologize to their customers.

Now as to the apparent fact that your opinion is the only one that counts and if anyone does not like it they can leave. First of all. P.O. Second. you don't like my opinion I suggest you look away.

the offer is fair - you have to realize they are not obligated via contract to give anyone anything. read your agreement, you are losing play time that is it - and it is not a 911 system, whjen it comes back up it comes back up.

If you follow outside news sources rather then this one - they have apoligized already.

I agree. The inanity of these "demand list" posts is through the roof.

In actuality, SOE doesn't have to give anything. Of course, they'd have to live with the outcry of such.

That they are providing us complete monetary compensation (1 free day for each day the servers are down) PLUS another free month on top of that is fine with me. I lose nothing of real importance (money) while they fix their issues AND I get a bonus out of it.

People either are lazy and want it all handed to them or greedy and are trying for as big of a compensation grab as they can get. How about being happy they are compensating us in the way they are. They just as easily could have said "You'll get nothing and we accept it if you leave." Then what would you have done?

You go to the movies and take your whole family with you. You buy all their tickets for the movie you want to see. You then load up on pop corn and sodas and head for the theater. You are met at theater door by an employ who says. We're sorry. We sold to many tickets and there is no room for you and your family. We are not going to give you any form of compensation but we will accept it if you leave.

You mean to tell me that you would just walk out?

Like have already stated. I agree with no in game compensation. For all you folks saying Sony does not owe there customers anything. I really hope each of you gets popped for identity theft. No, I'm not saying I'd be happy to be told to get out and we're not compensating you anything. You, me, everyone would have every right to complain if that's what SOE was doing.

Taking your example, the movie theater (SOE) isn't saying get out, you get nothing. They're saying "Here, we're compensating you all the ticket prices and food costs you've paid for and offering to move you to another movie today, PLUS we're going to give you one month's worth of free ticket admission on top of it because we screwed up."

What people here are doing with these "demand lists" is saying "Well, that's not good enough. I want free food, drink and quarters for my kids to plunk into your video games when we come in 2 hours early and wait for the movie to start."

THAT'S what I find ridiculous and petty.

I appreciate that this was not SOE's doing. I really do not care at this point if they were at fault because of poor security maintenance. Nor is it important to me what they "compensate" us with. I really just would appreciate more frequent and detailed updates on the status of the problem; when they will have a schedule for returining to service; what, if any, changes will be needed on our part to log in to the games again. I have two, one year subscriptions to EQII. I play on an exchange server and use station cash a bit, so SOE add that together and consider that I have playd EQII since opening, I think that I have a right to expect a little more than a ***** posting FOUR days ago. Help us out, Brass.

If I pay reoccurring monthly how will I get a free month exactly?
When I cancel my account i'll get a free month then?
What if I dont cancel?

My friend has a years subs, how will he get his free game time?

Im guessing that most people wont ever see free game time, if they cancel their subs then they probably wont be playing anyway?

If they cancel, the subscription runs to teh end of the billing period - depending on when the time is added they can see it, if they cancel and the subscription runs out before the time is added then no they won't seee it.

As far as monthly reoccuring or extended, they just move the bill date out the required number of days, so if your next bill date is 06/11/11 it will be altered to 07/11/11, same with 3,6,12 month subscriptions. I used 30 day extension as a simple example.

IIRC last time this happened (Christmas meltdown of 2007? where they did a rollback) they simply push the next rebilling date back until the gifted free time has been used up. Therefore you should get to see your free game time when the servers eventually come back up.

Wow, it's a shame that some of you have turned to pointing fingers at each other. You don't have the chat channel to troll so you come on here and create one. Go back under your bridge and stay there. It's just a game and there are many other games out there to keep you occupied until this is all figured out. You don't own your characters, the items they carry or the platinum in your bank. You own NOTHING. Read your EULA.

There's people on here talking about Pakistan and missles. WTF is wrong with you? Do you have to take this and turn it into a circus? It's just a game. It's just a game...it's just a game....ZZZzzz ZZZzzz. At the count of 3 you will open your eyes and everything you've seen or heard for the past 10 years will have been a dream.

Go mow your yard, wash your car. Stop beating each other up on the internet, there are no winners. You guys are acting like a bunch of savages on here and it's ridiculous.

Flame all you want. My rant is over.

SoE bought themselves more than 2 days of time with this UNOFFICIAL post:

Quote:
"We wanted to let you know that our games will not be up this weekend. We are working around the clock to get our services back up and running soon. Thank you for your continued patience and support."

Please do NOT use facebook/twitter to inform your paying customers of delays.

Please use the official SoE Website to keep your Clients informed!

I think the SoE management is avoiding using their website because it places them in a worse situation than the passing of information on a social-environment does.

Really? Complaining about how SOE puts out information? After the cacophony of whining emanating from posters here, people should be happy if SOE uses smoke signals or Morse code to make an announcement.

SOE is lacking on announcements, people complain.

SOE announces expected downtime, people complain how it's announced.

Damned if they do and damned if they don't, it seems.

Just go to Sony.com > PC Games drop-down, then Everquest. You will get the official releases and the press releases.

Read some of these posts below yours and this is what Sony's website would be cluttered with. I'm sure they have better things to do than to read stuff like that. I'd really hate to be in charge of moderating their web page.

Except that customers of Sony who may be affected by the situation should not have to go further than their e-mail account or mail box to be kept updated on the situation.

No, it's for stalkers. What better way to use stalkers than to make yourself appear more popular on a virtual network.

I believe the following video is a perfect analog to twitterspacebook - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qjnklo7QryU

I did not know it was easy for the hackers to get into the system. If they did or did not have up to date security in place, that does not mean that the hackers could not still get in.

I like the (below) the level of ease that they accomplished this. Guess he is one of the hackers, knows how easy it was to hack the system.

Kadar34 ur right..my analogy is a lil off because my car doesn't have multiple locking systems..but i'm sure the hacker had to get thru atleast one firewall (outdated or not) to get our information..but the level of ease that they accomplished this does not make it ok by any means.

SOE initially thought no data was extracted, what changed?

Essentially the perpetrators used sophisticated means not only to access the data, but also to cover their tracks.

Some of you just talk out you $$ and have no idea what your talking about..
more out there
