Rick Tellis talks GW2's Extended Experience

More like he answers some common questions users have had about Guild Wars 2's Extended Experience, but information is information.

For those of you who have no idea who or what the Guild Wars 2 Extended Experience is, you'll have to refer to about a week back when ArenaNet pushed their "dedicated extended experience" team into the spotlight, debuting some web and phone applications (iPhone, iPad, iPod and Android smart phone) that will allow you to stay connected to the world of Guild Wars 2.

More specifically, these apps will allow users to chat with their friends, see where they are and where they're going, as well as being able to... oddly enough, "help out-of-game friends help in-game friends by locating places or items." In other words, mobile interaction with the MMO world.

Either way, you can imagine just how many questions and how much discussion was spawned from this intruiging little idea, and so Tech Director Rick Ellis decided to round up some of the more common questions to answer them on the ArenaNet website. In this little mini-FAQ, Ellis confirms that they are currently developing Guild Wars 2 for the PC only (sorry Macs), despite their extended experience relying so much on iPads, iPods and iPhones, as well as reassuring the player community that Smart Phone users will not gain any unique advantages, nor will it be necessary to utilize these applications in any way.

All in all, that's some solid PR management, as rumours like those can certainly get ugly if they get out of control. You can read all of Ellis' answers below!

Q: Considering that Guild Wars isn’t officially supported on the Mac, can we interpret the news about the Extended Experience (which is supported on iPhones, iPads, and iPods) as an indication that Guild Wars 2 will be playable on the Mac OS?

Rick: Currently we’re developing Guild Wars 2 for the PC only.  Although the Extended Experience will be supported by iPhones, iPads, iPods, and Androids, it will also be supported by other smartphone platforms and on the web.

Q:  Are there any plans to support the Guild Wars 2 Extended Experience on WebOS?

Rick: We currently don’t have any plans on developing the application for WebOS, but we’re still in the early stages of development. As the technology progresses our capability will increase, so we’re not ruling anything out.

Q: Will all the features on the mobile apps also be available on the web? I’m concerned that, because I don’t have a smartphone or iPad I’ll be locked out of the Extended Experience or miss out on cool features.

Rick: Not to worry, we’ll provide the same functionality on the web, so non-smart phone owners will be able to access all the Extended Experience features. Sure, they may not be able to access the Extended Experience on the bus ride home, but we’re definitely not going to neglect web users.

Q: Can I be in-game with one character and use the mobile app to chat to friends in-game using a different character?

Rick: When you are active on a mobile device, you aren’t in-game with a character. If you chat with someone, you will appear to them as yourself, but as a mobile user.

Q: Are you concerned that this application will become a must-have, thus potentially causing segregation of players?

Rick: The Guild Wars 2 Extended Experience is designed to enhance the player’s game experience, but won’t be necessary to play the game. We certainly don’t want anyone to feel like they have to have the apps in order to enjoy the game or be competitive.

Q: With this application, will you be able to go to places or perform actions that your character wouldn’t be able to do normally in the game?

Rick: No, we’ve intentionally designed the application features so they don’t confer any advantage or provide any exclusive functionality to Extended Experience users.

Q:  Is there any chance of getting something akin to GW’s observer mode with this application?

Rick:  That’s definitely within the realm of possibility, but we haven’t announced any such features…yet.
