As we've already mentioned, today marks the official launch of Star Trek Online. Well, players got a little surprise when they opened the in-game Cryptic Store and saw that there are two playable species available for purchase: the Federation Klingon and the Federation Ferengi.

The Federation Klingon species costs 240 Cryptic Points, while the Ferengi only costs 80 points. Information on both species can be found on the official site's Cryptic Store page or after the jump.

Reaction to the revelation has been mixed among the game's community. A thread on the official forums already has more than 350 responses filled with opinions from both ends of the spectrum. Some players are angry that they have to pay for new playable races on launch day, while others believe this is the whole point of the C-Store and note that many pre-order deals came with extra Cryptic Points. Playable Federation Klingon (240 Cryptic Points)

Not every Klingon warrior yearns to serve the Empire. Purchase of this option allows you to create Klingon Federation Officers. These Captains begin with the Warrior (5% improvement to Ranged Weapon Damage, 10% percent improvement to Physical Melee Damage, 10% improvement to Critical Severity) and Honorable (5% resistance to all damage, 10% improvement to Threat Rating) traits. They may choose two additional traits. Note: Purchase of this option unlocks it for every character slot on an account.

Playable Federation Ferengi (80 Cryptic Points)

Have you got the lobes for command? Put your latinum in the slot and create a Ferengi Federation Officer! These Captains begin with the Natural Immunities (40% resistance to Toxic Damage, 40% resistance to Radiation Damage) and Acute Senses (20% improvement to Stealth Sight, 10% bonus to Exploit Damage) traits. They may choose two additional traits. Note: Purchase of this option unlocks it for every character slot on an account.
