DDoS Part II
# Apr 26 2005 at 3:36 PM Rating: Decent
A bit more info on the DDoS situation....

Anybody who has the knowledge to conduct a DDoS attack this big has already committed a felony and will be lucky if they don't get caught or they are a minor.

Secondly, you should be blaming Internet Service Providers(ISP) at the moment instead of SE. An attack this big is coming from PC owners that do not have the proper protection (i.e. Anti-Virus software/Firewall). Good ISP's will call these home PC owners letting them know why their connection will be temporarily shut down until the problem is fixed. And is quite easy for ISP's to detect if they have anybody watching a Packet Sniffer.

They can block the IP's where attacks are coming from. But if the attack is coming from 1,000+ machines, imagine how long it would take to block that many IP addresses.

This is somebody's personal vendetta, and unfortunately, we will most likely have to wait until the ISP's catch on.
Hmmm...

Does anyone else find it odd that the two times I have complained, the problems have been fixed within 10 or so minutes? It's down all day, I complain, and presto, it's back.

They're always watching o_o

.... you know, I was just sitting here, and suddenly I heard a noise. I went to investigate, and I moved some cloth that was hanging on the wall, and guess what I found?
There was this amazing thing called a WINDOW, and beyond it was something even more wonderous... Apparently, its something called OUTSIDE. And its filled with all sorts of interesting things! No joke!

... Seriously folks, the game isn't coming back online for at least 6.5 more hours, so why dont we all just go for a freakin picnic in the park or go to a movie or to the mall or sit on the back porch and read a book?

Oh, and a quick note.

Whoever rates my post down, please, don't be a coward. Post why you think it's acceptable for SE to deny a service I am paying for, not even have the decency to simply update their information so we know whats wrong and how long it is likely to take, and still take my cash.

Please. Enlighten me.

None of this "it's not their fault" crap. It IS their fault. Poor maintenence, poor security, poor handling. None of this "go play something else" crap either. If I pay for a game, I damn well choose when to play it. Some company doesn't dictate when I can and cannot access something I pay for the right to access.

So please. Go ahead.

a note would be nice
# Apr 26 2005 at 3:27 PM Rating: Decent
You would think that the least they could do is post something on their website about the problems today and what they are doing to fix them. Also how long they expect it to be down. Because it is lame going to their website and seeing no message of any kind and that all the servers are up.
im on in shiva

I'm absolutly furious with the service i've been getting lately from SE.

I pay £10 a month to play a game. I pay £10 a month to talk and adventure with friends. I pay £10 to spend days on end leveling up and investing time into my character. I do not however pay £10 a month to be given a service as bad as this. Nor do I pay it so I can sit around waiting to play a game I have the right to play while SE doesn't even update me on the reason. For someone to say "SE don't even know what the problem is!" is very niaeve. They know exactly what the problem is, and the most probably know exactly how to fix it.

This Ddos attack is the mosty pathetic part. If the server stability and security is that bad that these attacks are causing serious problems over the course of an entire month, it makes me wonder what all my cash is actually going to. Most of our money goes to maintaining the servers, expansion, ect. Seems like an awful waste to me.

I'm very unhappy that i'm constantly wasting time on this game lately..the rare occasion it DOES let me on, like the last day or two have been fine, have done more harm than good. What I mean by this, is that again the AH will be messed around with, as another whole day will go by with virtually nothing selling. Myself and other gardeners will have lost alot of gil too. Preety much everything I have done on the short times I have managed to get on have gone compleatly to waste.

I'm very angry that my money is being taken from me, and I am getting nothing in return. This IS SE's fault. However they try to blame anyone else, it's THEIR own fault that they have no been able to properlly deal with these attacks. All major sites and online games get these attacks.

So basically, i'm paying for SE's mistake. We're all paying for it. SE lose nothing in this, just the time needed to repair the problems when they occur, and the odd customer who have grown sick of their poor service.

I see no reason why I should pay them anything. They've breached the contract which comes with me paying them my cash. They are not, for whatever reason, providing my with a service that I am paying them for, which in my eyes is unacceptable.

I won't just leave however, because i've put over a years work into my character, but I also will be calling them first thing tommorow and discussing the issue.

Very disappointed though. I thought SE where better than this, and i've always told others that. Shame that they have now gone from a service I would class as 'above average', back down to 'very average'

First of all, there is nothing on Pol, that tells what is wrong, and how long it will take. 2nd if u don't like what is going on, u have no one to cry but the hackers. Think about it we had no probs signing on , untill they started to over ping pol. So if u can'get on, they just wait, because crying about it noth helping, go play a nother game untill it is up, not that hard to do. I am sure most of u have more then this game to play.
oh well...

Whoever said they think the whole "DDoS" thing is a big lame excuse.. I totally agreeI totally agree.

Just another way to keep us from achieving our goals in the game for even longer, thus making SE more money.

Clearup on DDoS attacks
# Apr 26 2005 at 3:10 PM Rating: Excellent
Some of you seem confused as to what a DDoS attack totally entails, I say this because you aren't nearly as angry about this issue as I am, and you should be.

Basically, if you are familiar with PINGs and PONGs, you can grasp this: these so-called "hackers" are sending packets of information at the POL servers nonstop, basically lagging it up to where it can't serve the customers. I find this whole situation ********* because, all whoever is working on the situation would have to do is to ban/block/firewall the ip addresses and mac addresses responsible. Given that, yes, MAC addies would be hard to get, but IPs, they should have already. All they have to do is contact the ISPs and they are legally responible for turning over the identities of the holders of those IP addresses to the proper authorities, which the penalties for these types of crimes now are EXTREMELY strict.

So, a lot of this derives from the responsible maintainers of the POL servers desire to "*****-foot" around, allowing us, the customers, to suffer.

So, for those of you that are saying we do not have the right to be upset because we are "only paying 15 bucks a month", you are depressingly wrong. When everyone here signed up, they entered into a contract with SE. One that guaranteed that as long as we continued to keep up our end of the contract (paying our fees, monthly), they would keep up theres (providing us with service, at OUR convenience).

Yes, they can't help the DDoS issues they are facing, but they CAN issue credits for the inconvenience of their customers to show their sympathy, rather than the CLASSIC "we appreciate your understanding in the matter" line. I DO understand the matter. And the solution is not as difficult as they are making it out to be.

Of course, a predicable reply to my post would be for me to just quit if I don't like it. And yes, if my loyalty to, and enjoyment of the FF universe were not as they were, I would. But it's the diehard Final Fantasy fans that are going to suffer on this, not the fly-by-night RPG fans...

Rate me down if you wish, but everything I have said here is valid. And SEs best move at this point would be an UPDATED announcement as to what is going on with the service efforts, an apology, and a partial credit of payment or service to all of those affected.

preformed is past tense, so is adressed, this already happened, ie 20:00 was actually yesterday, i was online when it took place, whooping the shadow lord ^^ so the time 20:00 means absolutely nothing that is when the version update took place yesterday, someone from alla got the date wrong look at the news on POL

read above, its most likely another DDoS attack, anyone who says its just a lame excuse is an idiot, though SE needs to step up and do something to appease its users b4 they lose more than just a handful of accounts over this.
