I dont care about the update. I hope square can fix some issues while the servers are down. But it is a little lame that updates are always during our peak hours. What can we do though? FFXI is made by JPs and maintained by JPs, so when they gotta fix stuff they do it at a convienient time for them. nuf said.

As far as all this nonsense about JPs not wanting to party with NA players, I think people are just worried that they wont be able to communicate with their party (or they get a jackass who cant play his job right). We really cant argue this issue because it is up to the individual player to decide wether he wants to party with someone who doesnt speak their language. Maybe square should add a little more auto-translator words so communication actually makes some sense (will they? doubtful). I have found myself in this type of situation many times. I am a bst, and the other day another JP bst was lvling in an area where pretty much only 1 bst can work in at a time. So I ask if he wants to party. He then asks me if i speak japanese. Well we never partied and we both suffered major xp loss/hr as a consiquence. I feel square should step in and hook us up with some useful phrases/words to make partying more possible!

Just my 2 cents.

i read alot of these post and i can see both sides of the fence, but i am so glad i am in sylph. I myself am a ps2 user and there are a few jp pt only people but alot of them were there to help us learn the ropes as well. I as well wouldnt mind a 3 hour update, but i also waited 10 total hours yesterday to play this game. This maintainence is a real downer but today was nice and i had a waterballoon fight with the neighborhood kids and relaxed with my family. So relax and enjoy the day, FFXI will still be there tomorrow but you might not.

Wow I can't believe people. Yes the maintenance is inconvenient, but to get into such an uproar about is immature and childish. To make rude and racist comments about a "game" being down is quite sad and pathetic (there is more to life out there folks)
With the amount of people that play this game (NA, JP and NOW Europeans) *Not just NA's* I know some of us like to believe that we are the most important out there and nothing should ever affect us.....but we're not.
It would be very hard to please everyone and not have it affect someone's playtime. Also if people were to check their playtime, I hardly think 2 days of 7 hrs would make a noticable dent.

Seeming how most people are at work or at school, this time is probably the most "game time" convenient, taking most times zones into consideration. It's not SE's fault that some people chose not to work or go to school during the day but decide to play video games.
So why not stop this "whoa is me.." attitude and get up and be productive instead of whining and bickering.

I totally agree Barki. Maybe we should use maintenance time to get a life maybe? If you can't handle an 8 hour maintenance, where the majority of the time, if you Work of are being educated [which I hope is the majority of you] you wouldn't be able to play anyways, and when you get home, and the update still isnt done, and the first thing you do is start ********* you have some major priorty issues. Use the time to maybe do your homework, or catch up on some sleep. Maybe go outside on your own free will, the sun is tens of millions of miles away, it wont bite. Maybe even, dare I say...SHOWER?!

This has been said many times, but apparently some of you out there havent caught on yet.

Please, for the sake of all your friends (which you might not have if I have to be telling you this) don't neglect your basic hygene, please.

Some of us have a life and may only get one night per week to play. So if we miss that one chance we lose a whole week, not just a few hours. We don't all have the opportunity to play all the time like some people.

The idea of having the maintance after JP primetime and before US primetime is a good idea. However this may be in favor more towards JP players in my opinion. Before you bash me as a JP hater or anything just hear me out.

For the maintance it is a set time for JP players on when the maintance starts however for us US players we only get a "promise" of when the maintance will be done. My gripe is that if SE extends the maintance, then it will cut into US primetime. Besides that minor flaw SE does know what their customers want. For example they were about to do maintance on Labor Day but they moved it to a day after since they recognized that is a high traffic day.

I'm not sure about that equality of maintance time between JP and US but I do know maintance extension happen way too often for this for a game that should be "what the customers paid for." They need to offer compensation for the lost time due to the extension of maintance into US primetime. If I'm wrong then I'll retract my statement.

LMAo I can not take it anymore I do understand that jp's seem have it better when you twist the plot to fit your conspiracy but when you break it down to nuts and bolts SE is a company that wants money why would they sit around and plot on NA that makes absoulty no sense and you need to look at the whole picture it has nothing to do with JP NA or the little ppl from mars
Be serious people

Umm... This really doesn't favor anyone... Has ANYONE who is complaining thought that just MAYBE the server maintenance time has to do with when the people performing the maintenance are at work?

Why should people have to come in at awkward work hours just to appease your passtime?

I for one am always glad that the work is done while I am at work.

funny how you call ppl morons when you obviously dont know the peak times ppl as a whole are on. Check out the census and that pretty much answers your question. However, its not even in NA or JP peak times so they actually chose the best time to do this. Everyone we dont have to wait much longer so lets just chill.

Honestly, it is annoying that when you finally have some free time from your job, companion, school or just pimping . . to come home and realize that SE is delaying you from playing your favorite pasttime due to maintenance. I was infuriated to find out that they still had some technical difficulties half an hour prior to their scheduled end time.

But that's just the way it is with technology, it's usually evolving and everything needs an update or two...or thousands.

Ah yes, everyone will return to their merry ways once this update is completed. So hush puppies.

Patience is a Virtue.

Being a programmer of any kind does not necessarily mean you understand networking and the work that goes on in relation to it. They're different things, even if it's all related to computers in one way or another. Therefore, unless your credentials involve networking and are rather extensive, I wouldn't believe you have any credibility in this area.

If anything, as a noteworthy programmer, you should understand why Square is updating the software when they are. It's the best possible time they could do it. They're avoiding Japanese and American prime time, which is admirable. In fact, the Labor Day rescheduling is an especially incredible example, considering that most network technicians deliberately work on networks during the holidays. Why? So when everyone comes back to work, the updates are complete. It's a rule of thumb for network techs.

All things considered, I'm sorry, but it is not, as you say it, "bullshyt," and programmers and network techs are not the same thing. If you're so enraged, I do feel sorry for you. Square is doing the best they can to please all parties by doing this work in the middle of the day. If you don't like that, well... that's too bad.

Perhaps you can work on a networking degree in the meantime?
huh..

shouldn't most, if not all, of you posting now be in school or at least doing homework? and those out in the real world - can't you just call up your local crack dealer for your downtime fix?
seriously folks, a game of this magnatude cannot be updated perfectly everytime, no matter how many testers are working on it.. trust me, when you're testing the same game 12 months in a row, you get bored and complacent and are bound to miss some of the small things.. as for the 'favortisim' about downtimes, it wouldn't kill you to actually move away from the computer for a day.. go outside and enjoy the sun while it's still warm, call up some friends and hang out.. we're a nation of fatasses as it is, we don't need more reason to sit around and get bigger

Hey question...to whoever said the census said it is at the lowest time that they schedule this....do you realize that they have maintenance at that time so noone can come on...do you forget bout that?

i'm utterly pissed right now, I woke up at 2pm to find a server update..ok cool..it wasn't done till 12pm then i had to wait 3 hours, by that time i said **** it and went to bed...

Today i get up at 12noon and maintenance...play for an hour and no biggie i get to play a lil later...bu8t no i log on and the 3hours has turned into 8.

I can understand down time but come on...

it's not favortism?
JP got 1 year early...NORMALLY games are sent 3-6 months apart not 1 year

CoP got 5 days before NA...Are you seriously saying that they, with how the government and businesses are controled over there COULDN'T wait 5 days?

Updates always done 12noon est to 10pm est...I have almost never seen a JP player on at those times and not only that they don't announce them all and that's annoying, because people get randomly booted off. Not only that but they don't need to shut down to update. that's bullshyt

maintenance 12-3est...cmon now...this midnight for them that's an inconvienence for them to do it at that time? why would they?

That doesn't show favoritism? not at all?

As for Razmaster...this is bullshyt i'm a programmer myself so don't hand me this load of crap about wouldn't want to do this when blah because that's what they are doing THere are far more NAs on than there are JPs and it's pissing alot of them off.

As for all you talking **** about ps2 owners. well guess what a lot of ps2 owners also have it for PC but don't play it...you know why? because sony didn't put the right specs on the box or anything. Whoops and you can't send it back. 50 bucks down the drain. I can't run mine because of dell just happened to not put an AGP slot into my machine...blah anyways different rant

I'm just saying c'mon...17hours of down time amazingly ALL on NA play time, that's ridiculous

i have been playing ffxi long before the PS2 version came out. before the PS2 version came out, NA and JP coiexisted in harmony and no one cared whether or not someone could only speak japanese or english.
when the PS2 version came out, thats when all the japanese players began to request "JP PT only " because of all the dumb noobs who would invite them and would be rude to the japanese players as well as having no idea in hell what theyre doing.
luckily for me, i managed to make a few JP friends over time although i dont speak any japanese and we still pt together from time to time..
Am i the only PCer who noticed this trend with the Japanese and the noob influx or is it a just a deluted thought? please another PCer let me know!!

I totally agree.. I got this game up and running on newyears eve and I can tell you... I had a great few months... I literally had a few JP (and NA) who spoke english a little say Happy new Years!! and welcomed me to the game. They gave me tips and hints and even gave me some starting money.. i was overwhelmed with this cus i dident even know how to move right then and there^^ all i can say is the japanese are people too so be nice... if your racist that is your problem but do not bring that to public forums.

Yeah, I'm with you there. I didn't start playing a long time before PS2 version came out, only about a month before... And even in that time I noticed NO problems between the JP and NA'ers. PS2 version comes out...

Example of Jeuno, on some random night:
-JP Player sends a shout
-NA Player shouts back with some rude comment

Yeah, it's all the noobs.

On an unrelated note, quit complaing about the maintenance. Oh yeah, I'd sure rather be leveling right now but guess what? There's a million things I've been neglecting thanks to this game. Up comes a maintenance day, oh whoops, I guess I better go work on that. All I'll say is: FF11 is just a game. It's not a life. Major difference. This downtime gives you a chance to do those things you've neglected. Rather, you just come to sites like this and complain, making others upset and feel your pain. Two words: Grow up.

I like the fact that we get updates. ITs awesome to play a game that can evolve and become bigger and better. + i got cable always something good on TV.
O and another thing if ur sick of the japanese ignoring u learn some jaanese and u'll find that they will help "yesjapan.com" is a great place to learn. It's hard to help if they don't understand ya. O and i kno the auto translation thing is a joke if ya want to comunicate. U usually r talking in code practically.

I agree. I have been playing EQ for 5 years now and I am always glad when there is an update. I have 56k and it sucks to have a huge DL but it is always worth it. Besides, FFXI has far less DT than most MMORPGS.

And all the anti-japanese crap is ridiculous. I put off getting FFXI for a long time because I had too much going on. While I wasn't playing I heard all this japanese bashing about how "I can't talk to them" or "they never respond with anything but (I don't speak any English)." If you dont speak any japanese then you are in the same boat.

If you don't want to bother learning any then don't play with Japanese. But don't ***** about them either.

The Japanese created this game and they are the ones who fueled it for 8 months before we could even touch it.

Btw, I have had nothing but good experiences with the Japanese and I have a few on my Friends List because I was polite and they reciprocated. Good manners translate well from real life to videogames.

first, i wasnt bashing the japanese; for the most part they are good players and people as well.

what my problem is how it is so hard to find a japanese person that will reply to a NA player. before the PS2 release, i enjoyed many pts with them and trying to talk to each other through translators was a challenge at first but i got the hang of it and it was fun using cyrptic messeges to communicate and to realize that we could actually understand each other using such basic words and phrases. i became friends with a few of them and we still do random /ems to one another even after almost a year since we've pt'd.

the issue contains PS2 noobs. as a disclaimer i will say some, *NOT ALL* ,act inappropriately. but none the less they are creating a bad image for all of us and should be a topic of concern.

my point was the bad behavior of the new PS2 people towards the japanese. the way they talk to them and refuse to use translators is almost sickening. they complain that the japanese people wont talk to us but we do the same thing when we're in a full japanese pt. i am tired of this quasi double standard that has formed among the NA ranks. i'm sure that if most people would put forth a little effort to use proper etiquette when communicating with the japanese they would open to us and the relations between NA and JP players would get better.

that's all im trying to say. i dont mean to insult anyone or anything by stating my opinion i just miss the experience that only players with different cultures can bring. thats what makes ffxi so fun. we get a glimpse at what people are like outside our own country, state, or planet depending on what illegal hallucinogenic agent you voluntarily consumed last.

Updates do suck, yes. Especially unscheduled ones that end up getting more than doubled in length from what was first announced. The main reason I was annoyed when I found out about this update today was because I went ahead and bought the new Noct armor set for my RNG and THF and really wanted to see it in action, now I will not be able to play again until Thursday at the earliest, possibly not til Sunday because the only time I can really play are Sunday/Monday/Tuesday. I just want to level my ranger so I can use my new cool armor. I got called in to work today, didn't bother me too much because it would have been right around the times of the maintenance, but now I see that I won't be able to play at all tonight. Guess I'll end up playing some mario golf for money with my roommate like we do. A dollar a stroke makes for some real interesting golf.
