A Day in the Life of a GM

Originally from EQLive (with pictures), from an intern with SOE's community relations (note this is EQ2 based):

A Day in the Life of a Game Master

My internship at SOE is almost up, and I've been not-so-secretly plotting to extend my days here in some sort of scenario mimicking the story line from Office Space. I feel that in my few months here I've only scraped the surface and there's still so much left to see and do!

I've had the amazing opportunity to meet players from all over the country via the Community Summit in February. Through the forums and emails I've been able to take part in game related discussions, listen to ideas while sharing some of my own, and build quite a few friendships. I had the pleasure of informing gamers about the importance of account security. I've delved into the mysteries of the naming policy, and walked everyone through how to petition. (I'm sure you all have them book marked and memorized!)

Sony Online has high standards when it comes to community, and being an intern here has certainly shown me that the people in the Community Relations department work very hard to uphold them. Community is the brighter side of SOE. Sure, there are rough times, naysayers and people who obviously make it their goal to give us wrinkles before we are due, but for the most part, it seems to be a rewarding job for those who truly are passionate about the games and their players. Keeping that in mind, I didn't want to end my days at SOE without the full experience; the good, the bad, and the ugly. So I signed myself up for some Customer Service experience!

Before I headed over to building number three where the Game Masters run the show, my friends and I took bets on how many petitions I could go through before I began to cry. Lucky for me, I was paired up with Amy, better known in game as, Senior GM "Kimbial." She was referred to me as the best they had up there, and she greeted me with a smile. Not a snarl. No disgruntled stare; a genuine smile.

When I sat down to intently peer over her shoulder, she was already in the midst of answering petitions. The first that came in was regarding botters. For those that don't know, botters are people who use a third-party program to control characters within games. I let out a sigh of relief when I was assured that two boxing was completely accepted, and Kimbial even raised an eyebrow in challenge while suggesting three-boxing!

As she entered game, Amy explained the priority of petitions. Part of the job of being a Customer Service Representative is ensuring that players have the most enjoyable game play experience possible. Naturally, issues directly affecting game play, such as stuck characters, are mostly addressed as soon as they come in.

Kimbial popped in the Ruins of Varsoon. Ah, one of my favorite places to mentor my alts and go on a named killing spree, collecting loot! Apparently, it's a hot spot for botters too! While investigating the initial petition, Kimbial actually found another group of botters. Her eye is trained to spot them. She is quick with her hands as she tabs through windows, and enters super-secret game commands that cause each of the characters to experience their final link death, never again to return to the land of Norrath . Within minutes she had eradicated the original problem causers and was on to her next petition.

This one dealt with a report of someone gaining experience while away from keyboard. Immediately I thought, 'Oh, another third party program?' Kimbial shook her head with a slight grin as she magically teleported herself to the server and zone the player in question was in.

There he was, a mighty Conjuror with an even mightier pet, attacking surrounding mobs. It looked normal at first glance, but then I noticed the Conjuror was just standing there, unresponsive. Kimbial made a few quick strokes on her keyboard and instantly, the pet vanished! Poor, poor mighty Conjuror, he just stood there, taking hit after hit, until his untimely death. Determined to give him another chance, Kimbial resurrected him and again, we watched (me, giggling a bit) as he succumbed to the will of the surrounding mobs. No banning for this bad behavior, she explained. An apparent first time offender, she gave him a light suspension with a warning, and even summoned his character to a safe spot. Had that been me, I would have parked him right underneath Woushi!

The next petition Amy answered was regarding an issue that plagues any online game. Plat spammers. You know the annoying tells and/or mails you receive advertising the out of game selling of platinum 4u!1!11! All it took to investigate this one was a quick check of his mail logs. And there the evidence was, page after page of it. Names from Aeope to Zendara; mail sent. He must have sent hundreds of mails, the list just kept scrolling. Within the minute Kimbial zapped him permanently from the world, as he was still standing at the mailbox. A job well done, I'd say, but the thing is, many may not realize it since they'll still receive his spam mail.

As Amy replied to the original petition, I noticed something; she wasn't announcing in emails that she had just banned a player. Instead, she typed something along the lines of, "Your petition has been read and while we can't always divulge information regarding the issue, please be assured that we are investigating." What?! How ludicrous! I'd be shouting from the rooftops of Qeynos, "Ispamyou was just BANNED!" I'd ensure through a bright yellow broadcast that everyone knew Norrath was now populated with one less spamming idiot, but alas, that cannot be done. Kimbial explained, while she'd love to have a feature similar to that, it wouldn't be long before the GMs were getting petitions for spamming! The truth of the matter is, within the hour I was over in CS, Amy alone had banned at least a dozen accounts for botting or email spamming.

The bottom line doesn't even come to mind when deciding whether or not to ban botters and spammers. Amy said if she could, she'd position herself at the known hotspots and just ban whatever botters she encountered. Although a lot of her time is spent doing the dirty work of CS, she keeps her spirits high by being involved in the gaming community as much as possible. "I get more love than hate," she says with an honest smile, explaining that she loves to spend time answering questions ranging from quest concerns, to "where should I place that expensive rug in my estate?" Being in game, questing and interacting, is what Amy is most passionate about. It is this approach that makes me believe the GM's of SOE are here to perform a great service for players, though a lot of their work may go unnoticed. There are real people sitting behind those avatars, people who know and love games.

Amy assures me that it's not a thankless job. She's helped countless players with a variety of issues, and many of them have shown gratitude for a job well done. Knowing that at the end of the day, the game is better than how she found it is a reward in itself. Who knows, maybe I can weasel my way into a Customer Service internship and continue on, learning, writing, gaming (and eating brownies!)

I think when EQ2 and WoW came out, a lot of peeps left to try new stuff. I think alot of those who stayed happened to be dedicated 2 boxers plus. And no, there is nothing wrong with boxing, I just don't like a company in Taiwan dictating stuff in game, and how weak Sony is to stop it. This fictitious GM is like the lone ranger, but I don't see it in Cazic where there are at least 5 teams from IGE, identifiable, but nothing done about it. It really wouldn't be surprising if Sony and IGE were in bed together.

PPL have several names for stuff but I think some are confusing the terms.

Illegal (banable) botting is where you have a third party program running your characters for all their commands and spells and heals and stuff and you leave it running with your one to six toons at a camp in some zone while you go to sleep or go to work or somewhere and your toons all get exp all day.

This is different from what ppl call boxing where you have 2-6 accounts and actualy set up and play em all at the same time. Here you pay for and play all your accounts hence no need to ban you for doing this. I know I would be royally upset if some GM came by and killed my mage pet during the middle of a fight because I was not doing anything and just standing there waiting for it to need a pet heal. I would be cursing in OOC about who trained my pet and is now causing me to run for the zone or to gate.

I dont care if they sent me tells. My wife complains that I dont answer her tells, and shes sitting next to me. Im often too busy doing something to answer somebodys tell or I just miss it in the battle spam or something. Its not the job of the GM to determine who is playing their character innefficiently and therefore deserving of death. Please just leave me alone. I am not bothering anybody and I dont want to be bothered. I am just here killing a stupid rat or snake or whatnot so please dont interfere.

I have already been killed by GM's before, with an exp loss, because of their stupidity/immaturity or desire to kill somebody; who knows. That was a ways back, granted, but I was just sitting waiting for a boat, right on the shore, at the spot that the boat comes to, and they started one of those stupid PITA live gm events in the zone and attacked me. I didnt have my /afk on so I guess that made me a target. He probably would have attacked me anyway even while AFK. I ran to get away (avoid losing buffs and needing a rez and regain mana) and got killed by some normal red con mobs in the zone. This which caused me a painful CR at the time, not to mention, no clerics for a rez and exp regain and no money to bribe one to come to that far-away zone. (I had a second exp loss death while trying to get my corpse)
I got not a peep from the gm's about killing me or for exp losses I had to eat along with the couple hours to get back to loot and scoot.

A GM's job is to wait until they are needed and petitioned and then to quickly resolve those issues that players need them for. Not to roam around any spots they think might be use for exp grinds and test to see if players are on their toes by killing off their pets or training them or whatnot. This includes killing players outright for their enjoyment or bragging about how many they killed that day! Taking revenge on someone by placing their toon in an unrecoverable situation because they dont like how the guys is playing, is quintessential immaturity, and they should ban themselves for doing that.

You need to be sure to realize that per the heading of the article that this story is an EQ2 GM not an Original EQ GM. EQ2 I don't think is as near EOL as EQ although I could very well be wrong.

In all honesty you rarely see GMs in game anymore. I haven't seen more than one or two in the last 6 months and even then it was by request. (As a side note not all GMs are completely up on what can or can't be done. Had an aug returned inside an MM. Had to petition again when it poofed when I left MM)

ok I am very confused..... i know alot of people that 2, 3, 4 and even 6 box... yes 1 full group all to 1 persons control.. now thats alot of money 1 person is paying out each month.. I myself dread the day SOE kills norath. It will be a sad day.. alot of years invested in this game.. but i have never herd it was against the rules to play more than 1 toon at a time.. groups are harder and harder to come by now a days.. if its not for the people runnin more than 1 toon their would be even fewer groups to join.. I played WOW for that 1 week free trial.. didnt like the game and the 1 main reason i will never go over to it is you can only have 1 acount.. if the people can play multiple toons at once.. let them.. if they wanna spend 3 times the cost for multiple acounts let them.. its in the companys favor. means more profits for the company and happier players. many many days i ran my little zerker around for more than 3 hours from zone to zone with lfg up and shoutting lfg through zones with nothing in reply.. i am glad i have the ability to 2 and 3 box.. if i couldnt i wouldnt have stayed in eq land as long as i have.. i love this game and refuse to go over to a "better graphix" game. i have had a happy 5 years playing eq1 and am hoping to have another happy 10 years playing it.. yes i have a wife and 2 teenagers that play also.. eq is not our life by any means but it is a very good release from every day hastles and bs.. mad at the boss or teacher.. log on and go kill some mobs.. makes you feel all better lol..
GROW UP!!
# Apr 05 2007 at 8:18 AM Rating: Decent
Some of you people need to grow up, and realize that you are not the center of the Universe. Even though the world of Norrath is a fictitous, it is not a perfect world, just like the real world. Prices in the Baz, BOO HOO, if you can't afford it, tough, I want a Lamborghini, but I can't afford it, see the analogy? Plat farmers, who cares! They are spending their time to offer some people a service, just like any other service, you don't have to elect to use it. Third party programmers, yeah, they suck, but don't ban them, fight the third party program instead. Look, when you ban accts, Sony is losing money, and when Sony loses money we all suffer, ultimately, the world of Norrath could be destroyed forever. I love this game, and I dread the day, when I can't submerse myself in the world. Oh, and I have use GM's on a few occasions, and their response was always within a couple of days. Always courteous, and fair. For a moment, looking at all the posts you've read, imagine how many crying, whining little turds that are out there, and imagine their job, yeah, not enviable at all. So cut Sony some slack, cut the GM's some slack you bunch of prissy biitches. I would hate to deal with some of you in real life, always complaining about nonconsequential shiit.

OUT!!
Disinfo is alive and well

Nice effort to disguise the source of Amy and intern with the dreaded usage of "racial."

Dribble, this letter that has been gone over with a fine tooth comb. This "intern" is someone's figment. The plan to present a life that does not exist. SoE does not ban people, except for really obvious attacks on its servers...not from inside, from outside.

Hey SoE, if this letter were real, why would you not annouce somewhere whom got banned? At least, send emails to graduating attorneys to help them get started.

It's smoke and mirror time. Soe mktg has too much time on their hands. Nice SoE, take us for fools. Wake up people, note when you are being manipulated into believing another's BS.

Tinmen term: if you can't dazzle them with knowledge, buffalo them with BS.
GMs and Guides

Please do not confuse GMs and Guides. GMs are Sony employees for customer service issues.

The Guides are volunteers who are mostly there to role-play, run quests and events, answer basic questions about how to play the game, and occasionally assist you with some problems that happen during the game. The Guides can tell you how to use the /petition site, how to send a /bug report, and how to /report someone who you think is not playing nice.

The Guides are not the Game Police. Guides can not reset a zone, replace a lost or missing item, or kick people out of the game. They can not give you "cheats" on the game.

I asked a Guide on my server and he was most happy to clarify what he does as a Guide.

I cant understand why they dont just price cap everything? make nothing buy or sell for more than 50 plat or something like that. Would solve the campers problem I think.

GM's

An interesting article, but I still miss them showing up in game quickly. It's also interesting to see that boter issues are being addressed. I myself have no problem with individuals running a couple accounts (as I and the wife do) but am tired of seeing the 24/7 farmers from IGE sitting on site, taking from those who actually play the game for fun, not profit. If the GM's are addressing this issue, then it scares me to wonder how many IGE teams might be out there.
I also do not enjoy the new setup for GM's, as many issues in game are really time sensitive, such as KSing, having uber guilds run you over etc. I think the feeling by many who do this is that by the time the GM's respond the point will be moot.
As far as EQ being a dieing game, it's been dieing for 8 years now, I hope that you move along to whatever new game you find, and enjoy. It'd be nice if you didn't rant on EQ for those of us who still enjoy. I'm pretty sure it's got a few years to go.

I've never encountered a GM/Guide who appeared to speak English as a second language. Indeed, the ones I've spoken with are more proficient in English than many of the paying customers they (and I) have to deal with on a daily basis. ("l337" hacker wannabes, ick.)

Yes, many companies do out-source their customer support to call centers in the developing world (Microsoft, anyone?) and I do not agree with this practice at all. However, I'm just a consumer, and the benefits to the companies who indulge in such far outweigh the negative consequences. If you were a CEO/CFO of a Fortune 500 company, which would you rather have? A savings of $100 million (or more) to report to the shareholders, along with a handful of complaints from customers? Or a sheaf of glowing reviews from customers, accompanying your bankruptcy filing?

Eh, too late (or early, depending on viewpoint) in the day to go into global business strategy. But the thing is, if you can get a service much cheaper elsewhere, you WILL; even if that service comes with some negative side-effects.

Your racist comments aren't appreciated or warranted.

Before you go spouting off about the lack of English speaking personnel at SOE, you may want to check into your many grammatical and spelling errors. Learn when to use there, their, and they're, figure out the whole apostrophe thing (consider researching capitalization as well while you're at it).

Let he who is without fault cast the first stone. I have had both good and bad experiences with GM's in game. Their absence has been felt by everyone, but from the article above, it appears that they do what they can with limited resources.

Stop complaining, quit the game, get on with your life. You won't be missed.

Humm me racist? You sir are the one whos sounding like SPELLING ****? You also sound like you are a GM sympthizer. You are only this till you have been sqrewed over by a GM not only once but three or four times. Only than will you see error of YOUR WAYS. You make me laugh,as to your only effort to chastize somone relys on simple typo errors. Are you a english major? or just a MAJOR DORK? I think we all suspect the later. pfft /NERD SMACK
poor performance GM's
# Apr 04 2007 at 3:39 PM Rating: Default
OK what they dont want you to know is that most of them DONT SPEAK english very well. They live in india. And when you disagree with the GM cause they do something stupid, they will deny deny deny everything. .If you have a bad incident make sure your log is on../log on. Than you can send it to the higher up's. There been many incidents where players have been ks;ing and a gm will pop on. If you send them a tell to come quickly, they will ignore you. So instead of watching the person ks you. You get to watch that person continue to ks you until a GM gets a ton of petitions. Does anyone here like that idea? i doubt it. Than if there is a incident they dont evan talk to anyone anymore. They just go with the side that has the most petitions. Thats why they get 2$ an hour in INDIA....they are Stupid power abusers. And since no one else wants there job, and there boss dont want to do there job ether, they have decided to ignore any complaints aginst them.
EQ is a dieing game and i cant wait for the day it dies. If i was ever to run into a GM. Well it wouldnt have a so pretty outcome for them. Quite frankly they are a bunch of nerds that are getting revenge for all abuse they took in high school.
But guess what GM's, you can take a nerd out of school....but that doesnt mean your not a nerd anymore. /SMACK / SMACK /RUDE......
