New Chat Channels

With the advent of the new chat channels, several sources are attempting to start up universal channels that would be uniform to all the servers. Seemed like a good idea to me, so I figured I would post up the ones that have been suggested. Feel free to add other suggestions in the comments. I have a feeling that eventually there will be a series of 24 hour unofficial channels going. The ones I have seen suggested so far are:
  • /join Tradeskills -- When you want to buy tradeskill made items, swap supplies, or check a current price or recipe.
  • /join Auction -- When you are looking to buy or sell items, this channel theoretically can give you access to players in every zone. Also a place to go for a price check. You will still have to go to the buyer or seller though, so it would be prudent to be near a portal where you can move through Nexus, or have a friendly wizard or druid handy.
  • /join Guild -- Guild leaders looking to recruit members and players looking for a guild to join can duke it out for members on a single channel.
  • /join OOC -- A suggested universal OOC chat channel you can join when you are soloing, in some downtime and looking for some way to keep entertained without playing gems.
  • /join Roleplay -- A suggested universal roleplay channel.
  • /join Help -- The thought on this is that experienced players can monitor this channel and answer questions by newbies and those with less experience.

I think a no drop channel would be great

Channels that are password protected will not expire when the last person leaves it. It stays active for 24 hours after the last person leaves. The auction channel on Veeshan so far has been /join EQSN:EQSN . EQSN = EQ Shopping Network ;)
    /join Taxi

Name says it all... Used on a few servers so far.

Since gate services are more bound to the place you are at the moment, a better idea is to ask in /ooc or /shout for a gate.

You've never sit in TT or EJ looking for a port have you? I've offered to pay over 300pp for a port out there but no one was around to hear my pleas ;)

Oh, that would be a great thing being way out in middle of nowhere offer a big pp for a port.. bam you got a druid/wizard running to you that you would have never got before.
    To much info

Ahh!, I'm gonna have to stretch out my chat window. What I want to know is when is Verant going to make EQ able to use Dual monitors. The left screen can be all Norrath, and the right screen is spells, chat, buffs, hotkeys, inventory, etc. Granted you have the dual video card setup. Currently, it's way to much info even on a 21" screen at 1024x768. Or are they already able to do that and I've been missing out.

the biggest problem i see is that it's a UNIVERSAL channel. it can be a pain in the *** to find out the person aucing the item is down in OS while you're over in Umbral Plains.

a suggestion on sub classes would be
    /join selling
    /join buying
    /join tradeing

helps reduce spam and you don't have to sort things out as much, and you can duck in and out of channels quickly depending on your necessity

Actually was in East Commons the other night, and got dizzy trying to watch all the /auctions scroll across the screen. Someone was trying out the new chat channels and had set up "Bazaar". Even in that channel things were very congested. K stories too long
Setting channels to items your either buying or selling would be best
    /armor
    /weapons
    /quest
    /spells
    Just a thought

Seen this proposal before, but does it make sense? If you want to sell something, where do you go? To selling so you are at the right place, or to buying, to see whether someone is actually looking for that? Other way round the same. You need to be on both channels, unless you are hanging around in "selling" to see what others got.

On Vazaelle there is /market... and I think to split it up into lesser characters may make it a bit too confusing...

a real good one would be a friend chatchannel but that could pose a problem when someone is talking to a friend but you dont got him on your friendlist.

but it could also be nice that you get informed that a friend comes online or leaves the game.
and that the friend list can be extended to about 50 becourse there so manny peeple on evry server evry day youl surely make more friends then 30 etleast i do.

Does nobody seem to catch the fact that a universal "friends" channel would not work. Say I did a "/join friends" with all my friends in the game. Well, they have all their friends do "/join friends" and the whole six-degrees-of-seperation concept would have the entire server in that channel. You have to setup private channels with your friends that you want to chat with. THAT is one of the intended purposes of the /chat channels. But what do I know, I'm just a dumb Troll.

But, what if not all of your friends were friends? I have that situation on my friends list. heheh At the very least, I guess you could be introducing people to new people. But, your big UEBER buddy might be a little upset being exposed to the pedantic rambling of you RL friends clueless teenage daughter playing her lvl 4 beastlord and dying every 10 minutes like clockwork. Not to say any of this would ever happen... ;)

    # Mar 20 2002 at 1:27 PM Rating: Decent
7th Hammer started using bazaar pretty much immediatly. The person who created it added a password (bazaar) because without a password, it would go away when no one was in. What he didn't really think about is that having it go away isn't a big deal. Also, with auctioning it will rarely go away (even some of the campers and over-seas folks who are on at 3AM will probably be in it).

I'll be lobbying to change over to Auction tonight. We'll see how it goes.

Well I like th /auction chanel - bought a diamond ring for 200pp today. I think another great channel would be LFG for those looking for a group. Might actually need a few:
    LFG10+
    LFG20+
    LFG30+
    LFG40+
    LFG50+

THATS a great idea, I think. Although, /lfg on is not used very much (only in starting phases of raids), so will this be? Everytime I do /who all LFG I get only some raiders and 2 or 3 more...

I doubt every server will have the same chat channels, as we can't even agree on the same camp names. On Vazelle it is /market rather than aution and /taxi rather than port. Just minor things, take a while before everyone becomes accustomed to all these new changes and have set channels. WTG verant on helping out all us poor ghetto server folk tho, seems like something they'd only give to Legends or something :-P.

Tribunal: In-game 'Port' channel takes off
    # Mar 20 2002 at 1:05 PM Rating: Decent
On patch day on the Tribunal Server, adventurers offering and requesting ports were requested to join the in-game 'Port' channel to start a service where adventurers all over Norrath could offer and request pick-ups and drop-offs.

As word spread into the evening, even adventurers in some of the most remote corners of the world were for the first time able to get ports out to their desired destinations in no time.

But, as with any service, the continued success of it is limited to how many adventurers actually contribute their time to their fellows. So it is important that the news of this service is spread far and wide to every corner of Norrath.

This could get very disorganized fast. Go to IRC and do a /list sometime.

I like that idea though. Add a /list command.

The best thing I can see happening though is the opportunity to organzie pick up raids without everyone having to join a big guild.

    /join NaggyRaid
There are 46 people currently on channel NaggyRaid

The Tribunal had an auction channel up when I got online yesterday. I fear this will be over-spammed as stated above. Maybe make a /join auctionsell, /join auctionbuy, and /join prices channels.

The new /hitsmode command is an 'eye' saver. I made 3 hotkeys ...

    /hitsmode my m3 100 150 5 0 1 1
    /hitsmode me m3 300 150 5 0 1 1
    /hitsmode other m3 500 150 5 0 1 1

and now I don't have my chatbox scrolling like mad during combat. The three boxes only appear during combat, and fade afterwards. The bad side to this is I don't notice the damage I take as much.

Anyone know if you can put your hits and when you get hit in the same /hitsmode window?

    like :

    /hitsmode my m3 100 150 5 0 1 1
    /hitsmode me m3 100 150 5 0 1 1

    RE: New Commands
    # Mar 20 2002 at 8:29 PM Rating: Default
No, m2, m3, m4, m5 is the format of the text. For example, m4 just shows numbers, the amount you hit or get hit for. (ex. 125) m5 shows the type of damage with the amount. (ex. crush 50)
Me, my, and other are the channels. So in your example, you would have 2 columns of text on top of each other.

make sure you think out your chat-channels...imagine all the sellers doing /join auctionsell then, all the buyers doing /join auctionbuy. The result of this would be a buncha folx auctioning stuff on 'auctionsell' and a bunch of people on 'auctionbuy' never hearing a word about it.

Well, I meant it as in I like to monitor what's for sale. I can do without all the WTB auctions, but I see your points .. wish we could have an auction channel and filter out say things starting with "WTB" or whatever you wish to not see.

    Rare Spawn Camps
    # Mar 20 2002 at 12:09 PM Rating: Decent
These channels would be great for keeping track of rare spawn camps. If ya on a list for the AC in OOT frinstance then whoevers there already does a

    /join ACspawn

then whoever want to be on the list can join in. That way ya dont have to remember a list of names ya can just keep everyone updated on your progress and let the next guy know when ya done.

Someone started our auction channel as /join bazaar and i think its gonna stay like that for a while. Also someone made a port channel (/join port) if you were looking for a port.

    Global auction = awesome

The only question i have is that if the maker of the channel leaves does it have to be made again or does it just stay active. Guess ill have to do some testing with friends.

One thing I would mention is that it seemed, though I don't have any official confirmation, that chat channels are cross server. on Tribunal someone immediately set up a channel called "tribunalauction" which was great. But at one point some guy came on and said he was on Tallon Zek server. ( Don't ask me why he would type /join tribunalauction , doh! ) And I also heard that people in a channel called "general" were talking to people on other servers.
So what I'm getting at is, having a channel called simply "Auction" might turn out to be mayhem if the person you want to trade with is on another server.

    Lots of Chatting
    # Mar 20 2002 at 11:24 AM Rating: Excellent
Only problems I could see with "Universal" chat channels is the spam. In just one zone with auctions on (EC is the main buy/sell zone on my server) you can't read anything before it scrolls by. I couldn't imagine if more than 100 people were trying to buy/sell in a channel...absurd.
    RE: Lots of Chatting
    # Mar 20 2002 at 12:48 PM Rating: Decent
Seems to me that the smart auctioneers would have themselves near to a Spire to Luclin, already in the Nexus or Bazaar, or have/be a porter to travel around to customers. With a little thinking, you can find nice, low-lag areas close to your favorite spire or in a corner of the Nexus, and just kick back with your chat window enlarged to cover most of the screen and keeping an eye out for what you want. Granted that the DL and GD spires to Nexus are kind of dangerous areas, there's zone lines handy in GD (or just hang in Thurg until you have struck a deal) and in DL you would probably be okay way up on the wall (or just go ahead into the Nexus if you're THAT worried about the dragon stopping by). While places like EC may be tough to watch the auctions when you've got other things going on as well, if you cut everything else out and are in a safe place to watch the stuff scroll by, then you can keep up pretty well... 'Least, I could :)

As for the creator kicking people out... *shrug* That's life. Make a note of the guy's name and ask 'em privately and politely later WHY they did it. Coulda been a misunderstanding, maybe they just didn't like your name, maybe they were selling the same thing and didn't want competition, who knows? :) Give 'em a chance, then leave 'em to their own problems if it doesn't work out. I've got a feeling that the old "bazzars" in Ec and other zones won't die out anyhow, though they MIGHT get a little thinner....
