Weekend Connection Problems

It appears that there was a wide spread connection problem in the world of Camelot this past weekend. Below is the comment that Spyke Alexander left on the Camelot Herald. He adds that this time it might not have been you going link dead, but could have been a server or zone crash. Just wanted to drop everyone a line that we are aware of the complaints from the past weekend of the seemingly large amount of disconnection issues that were going on. As always, we are working directly with our ISP (Worldcom) to make sure that there is nothing wrong with the infrastructure where our servers are, as well as solid connectivity to their peering points with other ISP's. We haven't come up with anything yet, but we want you all to know that we are doing everything we can right now to figure out what's going on. Just as an FYI, as far as the client is concerned, if you lose connection to the server via the zone you are in going down, or your connection being lost, it will look the same to you. So many of the "LD's" that people had this weekend may have been server crashes, not linkdead connection problems. We did have a few zone crashes over the weekend (5 total, across all the servers). Last note, in case anyone was wondering: You are not able to ping/traceroute to our servers directly. We use the 208.254.16.0 netblock of ip addresses. If you try and traceroute directly to one of those addresses, you will time out at the last hop until the maximum number of retries is hit. The reason I mention this is that our Customer Service has been innundated with calls/emails/etc from people sending us traceroutes saying that alter.net is having a problems (alter.net = UUnet = Worldcom, btw), when it was simply the fact that they were trying to trace directly to one of the game servers. So the last valid net address they are able to see is XXXXX.alter.net, most people assume that that is where the problem is. As always, if you feel that you are having a connection issue, etc, feel free to contact our Customer Support department and they will be happy to help you.
