Virus Reminder

I just want to remind everyone that viruses are sneaky bastards that try to disguise where they are coming from. Thus, you may receive something from admin@allakhazam.com or webmaster@allakhazam.com or any number of other official looking addresses that contain an attachment to open. Do not open any attachment from here or anywhere else for that matter!!! We will never send an e-mail to you with an attachment, so if you get one delete it immediately. These do not come from here and we unfortunately have no control over them. All I can do is post the occasional warning like this one. Please heed this advice. And please, if you don't have one yet, get a virus program (not to mention an anti-spyware program -- oh and make sure you have installed all of the windows security updates too). Now back to your regularly scheduled gaming news...

then get a pop-blocker ******... hell... verizon has one that installs when you get there service... comcast provides one, so does AOL...

go to your ISP's main website. they usually will give it free to people with the service. also if you have a firewall that will usually block 90% of the pop-ups if you have the blocker turned on.

EDIT: on a side note if your using Internet Explorer, go to the Windows Update page and update the security parts... you get a free pop-up blocker from that. its under Tools in the menu bar fyi.

ok ****** .... first off i use mozilla. which is arguably the best program out there right now. which gives me virtually no pop-ups ever. see i have this neat little thing that lets me know there was a pop-up on this page or that page. or is that too complicated for you?

and second .... as a web page designer you have the ability not to put in pop-ups. or is that too complicated for you.

why would you want to design a page with pop-ups knowing people cant stand them and have them blocked anyway? for extra advertising? a waste IMO. hence why ive made such a big deal outta this. or is that too complicated for you?

but thank you for your comments. have a nice day!

Publish some SPF records.
# Jun 16 2005 at 4:30 AM Rating: Decent
If allakhazam.com published some SPF (Sender Policy Framework) records then it would be easier for people to see if the mails are spoofed.

I use the Thunderbird mail client, and there is an "extension" that checks a mail against SPF to see if it's forged. (http://taubz.for.net/code/spf/)

There may (or may not) be similar tools for other mail client software.

Yes, this is a known threat called "Spoofing" started by Spammer marketers but now adopted by hackers and Virii fanboys. I have people tell me all the time to stop sending them spam. I try to be nice and send them a reply telling them that "I" am not the one sending them anything, but that my email host has been 'spoofed' and whatever program that is the perpetrator of the spoof is using my email address as the sender to have a return path for it's spam. My PC is secure...BELIEVE me...it is the HOST email server that is compromised. I have this from our top security IT guys at work. They told me that once they have your address spoofed...there is literally NOTHING you can do about having your name used in vain to perpetuate both Spam and Virii. Anyway...I am not an expert...but this is what i have learned from the "experts" where I work.

I know this isn't a solution or an answer...but knowledge is power.

Take care all,
-G.

Free AV
# Jun 15 2005 at 7:08 PM Rating: Decent
If you need a free anti virus check out www.pandasoftware.com

They install an ActiveX control which then scans your system. They keep their AV definitions current so you dont have to worry about it.

In the end, no matter what, unless you know and trust the sender, NEVER OPEN ANY ATTACHMENT.
