360!

I'm looking forward to Xbox 360 FFXI. I mainly play on the PC, but I run my mule on the PS2 so I can actually use my PC when not playing. Ive already gone through one PS2, and cannot replace it with a new one now that they no longer make the version with hard drive bay. Since Sony killed PS2 hard drive, I'm happy SE is moving on to a platform that will embrace the game. The hardware on 360 should be a lot nicer too. No more crazy framedrop in Lower Jueno maybe. While this is not good for PS2 players because it kinda makes you wonder what will happen to the PS2 support for the game in new updates and such, I think it's a great thing all and all for the game!
hmm...

Um... question. Isn't the X-Box live network a close network. Cause if I remember correctly, say for example, a online title is release for both the PS2 and X-Box, wouldn't be impossible for two players to play against each other?

If that's true, wouldn't FFXI be on a server on it's own when it's release for the X-Box 360? *Sorta like PSO Episode 1 and 2?*
hmm...

Ok so I just watched the Xbox360 announcement ceremony, in which the very last thing that they brought up was FFXI...along with the president or some other shmuck coming out and talking about FFXI on Xbox. One thing he said kind of bothered me, and basically what he said was that SE was pleased to announce SE games being brought out on Xbox360 and that it was just the beginning of their relationship. While I don't doubt that SE will continue to make some games for PS consoles, does this mean they're getting phased out just like Nintendo has...anyone who's played Crystal Chronicles should agree it was a joke.
What also concerns me is since FFXI is the first Xbox Live Gold game upon release...what could this mean for the rest of us in terms of problems like updates, server messups, etc. etc. in winter/spring 2006? I sense a lot of growing pains from this...maybe it's just me.

One thing I haven't been able to find out anything about...if you buy an Xbox360, will SE/POL offer an option to transfer your currently existing character onto the new platform? That would be awesome, though highly doubtful.

Aside from those 2 things, I'm like some of the other posters, glad that they've opened up the game to another level, because frankly, the way the game has been hemhorraging players the past few months, it wouldn't be worth playing without some revitalization.

SE will continue to make games for Sony for many years to come seeing as how Sony is the second largest shareholder of SE (19%). As long as SE is still around they'll be making games for Sony (or as long as Sony is still making game platforms).

As for the Xbox graphic quality causing trouble with the PS2 version complaint I'm hearing, don't worry about it, the PC version is already far more graphicly advanced that the PS2 and that hasn't caused any compatibility issues. It would be nice to get an upgraded PC version though, but I wouldn't expect that until after the X360 honymoon period is over.

SE will continue to make games for Sony for sure. SE won't back down on making games for PS3 =)

You can do that currently with the PC and PS2. Using your characters on different platforms is actually kind of common for the game. That being said, you will be able to use your characters from PS2/PC on the XBOX 360. I can 100% guarentee you on that. That's how confident I am in that statement. ^^

Others have marked you down and didn't say why. I'm marking you down, and am going to state why.

The servers are crowded as is. Try to camp in Yuhtunga Jungle at the Kazham zoneline... there are, roughly, 3 good camps. There are often seven parties out there at any one time. Add more people to the same spot. Now we have 10-12 camping in 3 camp spots.

Will they add more servers? Probably. Will they add enough? Highly doubful. They haven't done so yet.

This is a genuine problem for those already playing the game. Your comment regarding "sony fanboys" is, quite frankly, idiotic. It isn't just the PS2-only users that have a problem with this.

So, for an idiotic post, generalizing everyone that has a problem with this into a single category, you receive a Rate Down.

to many people on the server? i only see that as a problem when you try to camp a NM or something. i know its not going to be for a long time until xbox 360 and ffII comes out on it, but i think its good. i hope ALOT more people join my server, then after a while maybe i can get PT invite faster with all the new people lving. right now i HATE waiting hours to join a party.

As long as Square-Enix keeps FFXI for us PS2 users, I really don't mind. Sure it'll be flooded once again, but remember folks, SE HAS had it's fair share of problems with FFXI, and they have done an excellent job of dealing with these messes. 360 may just be as when FFXI was introduced to NA or Europe. As for PS2 limitations, I personally think PS2 can handle it's fair share since with the 40 gigs or hardspace(which is around what some computers have in total), updates and such won't be much of a problem. 360 may have improved graphics, but FFXI is really about experiance and just having fun! As for updating all systems at once, SE could just give out the usual updates for all systems, and then give the 360 users/PC users a seperate update for graphics and such. This could work out people, we just have to deal with it as we've dealt with all the past add-ons and problems.

That's roughly what I'm thinking, but just to let you know, and SE has said this officially: RAM constraints on the PS2 severely limit them as to what they can do, not hard drive or graphical constraints.

All updates are already larger for PC than PS2 by about 50% on average. It can be presumed that it's because the PC updates have more graphics.

Wow, Lot of unbased fanboi lunacy flying around since this announcement. Let's try to get some facts straight...

1. This is GOOD news. It means opening FFXI up to a whole new audience of players. SE has more than demonstrated the scalability of FFXI, if not the security... :p
This also indirectally confirms support for FFXI well into next year. /cheer

2. The X-Box is an honest, good, and most importantly Successful console. XBox users are people too - please quit the Holier-than-thou right now. Halo is a game, as is Madden and Burnout. Realize that they not only outnumber most "hardcore" gamers, but spend considerably more each year.

3. Is there any difference between "OMFGOMG DRK IS L33t Jour tEh SUxOrZ LOL 1!!!111oneoneone!!" and the nonsense you see about any other game? All systems, all games, and all areas of life have idiot fanboys. The trick is to ignore them and move on - like you've done to every casino in juno.....

Unfortunately for X-Box Sony's PS3 will have a much faster processor, as well as a lot of other things I for one will be buying a PS3 and will not be buying that big piece of **** that's bigger then a Volkswagen and needs an entertainment center just for itself. PS3 will own XBox because they released the stats and decided to bring it out before the PS3; bad move in my eyes though they might make SOME money in the beginning having it out first.

But once PS3 is out, and the FFXI graphics are enhanced for the new consoles. Xbox MIGHT, might look a little better but you know what it comes down to loyalty and I've been loyal to Sony for about 10 years or more now. I'm not going to up and jump to support the Xbox. Sure it's fun to kill people with the controller or drive the Xbox around like a bike but.

Now whether or not they'll stop support for PS2, I doubt it but you won't get to play with the updated graphics from the way I see it. Now don't quote me on this but. I see them making new servers for the updated graphics game if they are still going to support ps2. Unless they have PC/Xbox/PS3 download different graphics files. Since all we have is just a client they can do that too.

But we shall see.

there's a very good reason y u shouldn't buy a xbox 360 and y FFXI shouldn't be for xbox 360. sure u get better graphics but is that what the game is really about?

You know, FFXI has survived a lot of player influxes.

This game has survived, thus far, four player influxes:

JP PC
NA PC
NA PS2
EU PC/PS2

There is only one MMORPG that can claim that it knows how to handle a player influx, and that is Final Fantasy XI. So for those people paranoid about that, suck it up. It won't lag any worse and this game will not die because of that.

As for those worried about the PS2 version going the way of the dodo, I think not. I think what SE is going to do is be strategic about this: upgrading a lot more for the XBOX 360/PS3 (assuming there is one)/PC version of the game while keeping things simple for the PS2. It makes no sense for them to just shut off service to the PS2 version until the PS2 is completely archaic. PSX hung around for a good year or two when the PS2 was freshly out, and I expect that the PS2 will survive equally as long when the PS3 comes out. SE is not going to lose money by kicking them out prematurely, even though it is obvious that every constraint in game expandibility that SE is frustrated with is due to the limitations of PS2 hardware. They are going to wait until the costs of keeping PS2 running (e.g. programming upgrades, etc.) are greater than the income that is generated by those players.

Did I mention calm down? Every time there is an update or announcement, people freak out, but the fact is, the game still goes on.

heh I posted a reply to someone on the expo report thread when they asked if XI was gonna get ported at the time I said I didn't think it was likely (in restrospect it was more like I was HOPING not) plus I forgot to think about the next gen sytems. So now I stand corrected. I'm not entirely thrilled with the idea of FFXI being ported to the 360 but I also wasn't terribly surprised.

MS tried to develop their own exclusive console MMO with True Fantasy Online and it got canned before it saw the light of day. That said its kinda logical for them to make this move cuz its a hell of a lot easier to port a game thats already a a sucess than it would be to develop an exclusive game to try to compete.

My only real concern is the flood of new players that it will bring in unless MS uses that massive amount of money they have to fund new servers and stuff to deal with it. I hate microsoft and it pains me to say but so long as SE doesn't end up ******** PC and PS2 players just so they can make more money off Uncle Bill. I don't really care that its gonna be on the 360
Is it really so bad???
# May 17 2005 at 1:33 PM Rating: Default
I have had FFXI on my PS2 since it came out. Remember the PS2 users invested an extra $100 for the harddrive to be able to play it, and remember the it wasn't just for FFXI but for supposedly for other games and special software which was to be included, which didn't happen. Sony completely screwed us over with that, since they decided to discontinue (but still sell) the harddrive and create a newer model that has no use for it. So if Xbox wants to take it and put it on their NEW system (my PS2 will break someday), and on top of that make it better then I'm all for it. If you want to be upset about it, fine. But think about what will happen if they improve the graphics and the PS2 can't handle it, nor will Sony make the effort to do so.
Server Issues
# May 17 2005 at 12:35 PM Rating: Decent
The only concern that I have regarding the addition of X-Box to the FFXI world is the same as what several others have said. Areas like the Dunes and Quifim are already lagged enough. What's going to happen when the system's opened to a huge influx of new users?

I can only hope that Square has plans to add several new servers to deal with the additional load. They're track record of server stability and maintaining an acceptable game speed isn't exactly stellar.

I HATE Microsoft so much... YES I used their Windows Operating system, because it's the only thing out there I will use, because I do not like Linux. But mm WHY Square! WHY!

I do not see this as a very good move. However Sondy did say there will be a removeable drive for the PS3, I just hope to hell in a handbasket that someohoe that $100 drive I got will go into that PS3.

Many of you are freaking out that FFXI is moving to the XBOX and that PS2 users will be left in the dust. I just want to point out that this follows SE's strategy as we've seen it so far. SE is all about multi-platform when it comes to FFXI. They have PS2, they have PC, XBOX is the next logical step. I wouldn't be surprised if there is an updated FFXI client for PS3 once that comes out.

Just because FFXI is expanding to another platform doesn't mean that we need to be nervous. It actually means that the world of Vana'diel will be healthier and accessible to more people around the world than ever before. No other MMO can say that. It speaks a lot about the potential longevity of the game population.
