What did you call that? -- The great SOW debate

The interesting thing about an online, chat type of game like Everquest is that, while we are all immersed in the game and get to know the terminology of the game intimately, we never actually get to hear the names pronounced. Of course, as all the hooked on phonics folks will tell you, even though we are just reading, we are still sounding out the words in our heads. This leads to an interesting, and rather fun clash when a group of Everquest players finally get together in person to discuss their game. Everyone is convinced that the way they pronounce a name or place or phrase is the right way. The most divided phrase in the game seems to be the most popular as well. When you are shouting for a SOW, are you asking for something that rhymes with Cow or with Tow? Personally, I have always rhymed it with cow. But to my surprise there are a whole load of obviously uninformed people who rhyme it with tow. Go figure. This one debate has practically caused fist fights at the various fan faires. Other common words also can sound quite odd when you hear others speak them. There may be only 120 or so zones (I lost count), but there are probably a thousand different pronounciations of them. Go ahead and ask your friends how they pronounce such zones as Guk (I personally rhyme it with "luck" but others rhyme it with "luke"), Feerrott, Kelethin, Toxxulia (try changing the emphasis on the syllables and see how the whole word changes), and just about every zone in Kunark (are you really sure you are pronouncing Charasis correctly?). Sounds wierd doesn't it? It gets even worse when you start to talk about monsters. Do you buy your items in Cabilis from "Cloaks" or "Clocks" or perhaps "Klucks"? And just try to pronounce anything you meet in the Rathe Mountains. Ankhefenmut? Ankhesenaten? Darfumpel Zrubbel? Zazamaharet? Zazaphenebti? There are plenty more like that. Just go through the list and you will find that, with the exception of the orcs, goblins, kobalds and other creatures from myth or literature, there are usually multiple ways you can pronounce each one. The NPC names are even worse. Does anyone really have any idea how to pronounce Lord Doljonijiarnimorinar? So, taking advantage of the ability to add comments to an article, I figured I would kick off the debate. Below are just a small sampling of words from the game and how I personally pronounce them. Feel free to tell me how wrong I really am.
  • SOW -- Why just like Cow of course.
  • Guk -- Rhymes with "luck"
  • Tizmak -- First syllable rhymes with Wiz, second like Mack.
  • Klok -- "Clock" of course.
  • Kaesora -- "Kay" + "sore" + "uh". Emphasis on second syllable
  • Damask -- Sort of like "The Mask"
  • Sebilis -- First Syllable rhymes with Deb, then "ill" + "iss" with the emphasis on the first syllable.
  • Innoruuk -- "In" + "or" + "ook" as in "look"
  • Teir'Dal -- "Tear" (as in crying) + "Doll"
  • Feerrott -- "Fear" + "Rot"
  • Kael Drakkal -- "Kale" + "drack" + "all"
  • Cabilis -- "Cab" + "eel" + "iss". emphasis on the second syllable.
  • Ry'Gorr -- "Rye" + "Gore"
  • Rathe -- like "wrath"
  • Ankhefenmut -- ank as in "hank" + "uh" + fen as in "pen" + Mutt as in a dog with the emphasis on the first and third syllable.
  • Luclin -- I used to pronounce this "Loose"lin, but was told by the folks at Sony that they pronounce it "Luck"lin. Amazing how they can mispronounce their own game isn't it?
  • Drakkel -- "drack" + "ill". Emphasis on the first syllable.
  • Ulthork -- Ull as in "pull" + thork as in "fork". Emphasis on the first syllable.
  • Rowyl -- Rhymes with "Howl"
  • Froglok -- "frog" plus "lock". How else?
  • Solusek -- Sol as in "Doll" plus "loose" plus sek as in "wreck". Emphasis on the second syllable.
  • Well, you get the picture. Feel free to add in your own interpretation of these and other common words. Who knows, maybe we will all start to speak the same language after a while.

Hehe, well I think we can all agree to disagree.. Say them however you want to, and hope that if you talk to someone else they know what the hell you're talking about..

I agree that different english dialects (whether that be a US southern accent or scottish or australian or whatever) will pronounce the words differently...

Official Verant pronunciation of Qeynos as given by Abashi is: Key-Nose ... I say Quay-noos, you say Kay-nos, etc. etc.

Official Verant pronunciation of Luclin as given by Absor is: Luck-lin ... some people want to say Luke-lin, some want to say Loose-lin (but don't let the mistress of shadows hear you call her loose or Luke for that matter...)

Also Mana would more than likely be pronounced like Hannah or Sarah.. that's where the "uh" sound with an 'a' comes in.

As for shaman, look it up, it's pronounced either way and both are correct... Same with sow for that matter... of course since SOW is an abbreviation that's a moot point.

So the point is no one is 'right' or 'wrong' ... the pronunciation is open to your own interpretation... and I say Rathe is "wraith"..

I pronounce SoW as a 3 syllable word using its acronym. I pronounce it as Ess - ohh - dubyuh.
Maybe thats my flat Kansas accent showing through, but try talking about it in conversation pronouncing it as Cow/Sow or Sew....it just sounds wrong.

Here is an easy pet name: Goner. Any guesses? (Since writing this, Goner has been brutally gang-banged by the red-conning Orc from the Faydark's orc hill - you know the guy - and an Orc Oracle.)
    Cows and Pigs?!?

I suppose you can pronounce SoW any way you want, but why would you want to pronounce it like "cow" which is hardly thought of as a particularly speedy animal... And if you pronounce it that way, it's the same as a female pig, which also I think tends not to be that speedy with all the little piglets stuck to the teats...

(Yes, I know this is silly, but then again, isn't this whole discussion?)
    SoW
    # May 23 2001 at 9:27 AM Rating: Decent
The primary pronunciation for for most acronyms is stated so as not to confuse them with RL nouns or places. So if you take the military stand point on acronyms then you would pronounce SoW as Sew and not Sow because Sow could be confused with you speaking of a pig where as Sew does not relate one's mind to a physical object.

    just my 2cp worth...

BTW, I said Luck-lin for the new moon and it rolls off the tongue very easy.

*Laughs at the idea of standard rules of english pronuciation.*

I say sew, cause was as mentioned up top, a sow (cow) just kinda leads to it's own sick meaning...

    My personal favorite mispronuciation is:

    The Tribunal

Which we all know is pronounced like the word Volkswagon.

SOW -- Just like "Sew" because it just sounds dumb the other way.
    Guk -- Rhymes with "luck"
Tizmak -- First syllable rhymes with Wiz, second like Mack.
    Klok -- "Clock" of course.
Kaesora -- "Kay" + "sore" + "uh". Emphasis on second syllable
Damask -- Sort of like "The Mask"

    Feerrott -- "Fear" + "Rot"
Kael Drakkal -- "Kale" + "drack" + "all"
Cabilis -- "Cab" + "ill" + "iss". emphasis on the FIRST syllable.
    Ry'Gorr -- "Rye" + "Gore"
    Rathe -- like "wrath"
Ankhefenmut -- ank with the 'a' sounding like "Ahh" + "eff" like letter 'F' + en as in "pen" + Mutt as in a dog with the emphasis on the first and third syllable.
Luclin -- Luck + lin as in "lend" without the 'd'
Drakkel -- "drack" + "ell" like the letter 'L'. Emphasis on the SECOND syllable.
Ulthork -- Ul as in "lull" + thork as in "fork". Emphasis on the first syllable.
Rowyl -- Rhymes with "Howl" (Ok, you are correct on this one)
Froglok -- "frog" plus "lock". How else? (You are correct, sir)
Solusek -- Sol as in "Soul" plus "you" plus sek as in "wreck". Emphasis on the FIRST syllable. Think about it. He is a god of fire. Sol is a name given to the sun, and has always been pronounced "Soul".

For all those who say SOW must be pronounced like cow because that's in the dictionary and that's that, I respectfully point you to the next defintion in the entry.

For those who don't have a dictionary handy, sow can also mean "to plant", and is pronounced like "so" or "sew". (The prase "As ye sow, so shall ye reap" ring any bells?)

That said, it's a bloody acronym, it can be pronounced either way. I personally pronounced it like "so", while a friend of mine says it like "cow". C'est la vie.

*cheers wildly* Yes, it is SoW as in sew or so, I'm a shaman so I deal with it often enough, I ought to know, darn it!

And the much abused Qeynos..."Qey": Kway, not key, but I could probably forgive kay. "Nos": same vowel sound as in roast.

I'm not sure why Allakhazam doesn't have Sebilis and Cabilis rhyming though...why is it Seb-ill-iss but not Cab-ill-iss? They're lizards, not eels, which is what Cabeelis brings to mind.

First time the other EQ player at work said Loose-lin in the middle of an EQ conversation he had to repeat it five times before I realized what he was talking about. Sounds like a variety of prescription medication...I prefer Luck-lin :)

Not saying anyone is wrong here, but for the record, here is how my friends and I pronounce these words:

SoW - Sew, couldn't call it a female pig. just like SO

    Shaman - Shaaaaaman, also Shah-man

    Luclin - LUCKLIN, LUK'LIHN

    Kelethin - KEL-ITH-IN, KEHL-ITH-IHN

    Ulthork - UHL-THORK

Ykesha - Ya-Keish-ah, Ya sounds like ya'll with the ll's

MANA - MAN-AH, MAN-UH, like MAN, UHH, I really don't wanna do that...

Rathe - Like the WRATH of god, biblical

    Qeynos - K'NOSS, also KUEY-NOSSE

Rowyl - ROW-UHL, also could be (ROWYLL) ROH-WILL

Just my 2 cents, say it your way, have fun, and thanks for letting me see things in a new light.

So everyone should do the pronunciation as they please and if necessary try to make themselves clear like:

If you really want to break it down, i can get a friend who has been teaching english to collage students for 23 years.. But that if you ask me would be annoying more than anything else. Just some of you guys/gals lighten up a bit..

I think its like cow. There isn't another vowel to make it a long O. But the english language is screwy. The guy below is right, there is no one way, it just about preference.
    RE: SOW
    # May 23 2001 at 2:24 PM Rating: Default
Don't need another vowel to make it a long O:

When you go to the Show, to see the archer shoot his Bow, do you sit high or Low, and do you get some Chow after the performers Bow? When the Tow truck comes to Plow you out of the Snow, will you Vow not to have a Cow? That's all for Now.

Fact is that can be pronounced legitimately either way. But pronouncing it like Sew still sounds right to me.

Hey, Mr Always Right. If you are Always Right, How come you have had 3 wives? You think you would have gotten it RIGHT the first time.

First off, anyone who is foolish enough to think that SOW is pronounce only one way because thats the way THEY pronounce it is pig headed. Its an acronym for gods sake. Its not even a word. Not to mention that cow and tow can be pronounced either way. Try asking a Scottsman with a thick accent how to pronounce cow, its going to sound like coe. And if you don't think that is english, well then you are full of it. So dont go telling somebody else how how it IS pornounced, just how you prefer to prounce it.

I prefer to pronounce it like cow or cao because it has the W sound to it. The acronym IS S-O-W and the other way sounds like its just S-O.

Also there is no U in qeynos. Everyone that I verballly comunicate with pronounces it KEY-NOS. I find it strange that no one else does.

    SoW

SOW as in Cow? What are we... Bears fans? Mike Ditka would be proud! (Da Bears... polish sausage) Of course is SOW as in tow because despite the old nursery rhyme, cows can't fly!
    Rules? What rules?
    # May 23 2001 at 2:49 AM Rating: Decent
Well, I agree with most of those pronunciations. SOW will always be a cow to me. The one thing I don't understand is the thinking that English rules apply to made up words in a fantasy game. Words from another world should be pronounced so it flows off the tongue fastest as you are running to the zone.

    SoW, said sew! :)
    # May 23 2001 at 2:17 AM Rating: Default
SoW, well, if it rhymed with cow, it would be a female pig!

I say it like sew, or rhyming with toe, or tow. I guess I come to this pronounciation because the "o" is from "of", so if you leave the same "o" sound... you're not saying cow. :P hehe

    # May 23 2001 at 12:54 AM Rating: Default
This whole SoW sounding like "toe" or "cow" debate will never end for 1 major reason.
The word exist in the english language dictionary pronounced BOTH ways.
    Look it up people.
I've read the arguement about the "cow" pronunciation saying, "hey its that way in the dictionary." But oddly enough the neglected to look 3 lines down and see the alternative definition with the alternative pronunciation.
So basically, both sides are right and wrong at the same time, aka stalemate....so just let it go.

Now that I got that out of my system....
Luclin= Loose-lyn....much like you say Lucy. Simply cause it rolls off the tongue easier
Solusek = I say "sole-U-seck". "Sole" because of the heat/fire origin of the name. Its the simplest and most natural solution.

Those are the only things I really have an opinion on, if any. I'm just bored and its late.

    enjoy

on a side note; am I the only person that thinks the name Karana sounds like a woman's name? The last thing I think of is an elderly old man when I say that name, which, for the sake of arguement, I do not pronounce kay-RAY-nay, but I know someone out there does.

    once again, enjoy
