What did you call that? -- The great SOW debate

The interesting thing about an online, chat type of game like Everquest is that, while we are all immersed in the game and get to know the terminology of the game intimately, we never actually get to hear the names pronounced. Of course, as all the hooked on phonics folks will tell you, even though we are just reading, we are still sounding out the words in our heads. This leads to an interesting, and rather fun clash when a group of Everquest players finally get together in person to discuss their game. Everyone is convinced that the way they pronounce a name or place or phrase is the right way. The most divided phrase in the game seems to be the most popular as well. When you are shouting for a SOW, are you asking for something that rhymes with Cow or with Tow? Personally, I have always rhymed it with cow. But to my surprise there are a whole load of obviously uninformed people who rhyme it with tow. Go figure. This one debate has practically caused fist fights at the various fan faires. Other common words also can sound quite odd when you hear others speak them. There may be only 120 or so zones (I lost count), but there are probably a thousand different pronounciations of them. Go ahead and ask your friends how they pronounce such zones as Guk (I personally rhyme it with "luck" but others rhyme it with "luke"), Feerrott, Kelethin, Toxxulia (try changing the emphasis on the syllables and see how the whole word changes), and just about every zone in Kunark (are you really sure you are pronouncing Charasis correctly?). Sounds wierd doesn't it? It gets even worse when you start to talk about monsters. Do you buy your items in Cabilis from "Cloaks" or "Clocks" or perhaps "Klucks"? And just try to pronounce anything you meet in the Rathe Mountains. Ankhefenmut? Ankhesenaten? Darfumpel Zrubbel? Zazamaharet? Zazaphenebti? There are plenty more like that. Just go through the list and you will find that, with the exception of the orcs, goblins, kobalds and other creatures from myth or literature, there are usually multiple ways you can pronounce each one. The NPC names are even worse. Does anyone really have any idea how to pronounce Lord Doljonijiarnimorinar? So, taking advantage of the ability to add comments to an article, I figured I would kick off the debate. Below are just a small sampling of words from the game and how I personally pronounce them. Feel free to tell me how wrong I really am.
  • SOW -- Why just like Cow of course.
  • Guk -- Rhymes with "luck"
  • Tizmak -- First syllable rhymes with Wiz, second like Mack.
  • Klok -- "Clock" of course.
  • Kaesora -- "Kay" + "sore" + "uh". Emphasis on second syllable
  • Damask -- Sort of like "The Mask"
  • Sebilis -- First Syllable rhymes with Deb, then "ill" + "iss" with the emphasis on the first syllable.
  • Innoruuk -- "In" + "or" + "ook" as in "look"
  • Teir'Dal -- "Tear" (as in crying) + "Doll"
  • Feerrott -- "Fear" + "Rot"
  • Kael Drakkal -- "Kale" + "drack" + "all"
  • Cabilis -- "Cab" + "eel" + "iss". emphasis on the second syllable.
  • Ry'Gorr -- "Rye" + "Gore"
  • Rathe -- like "wrath"
  • Ankhefenmut -- ank as in "hank" + "uh" + fen as in "pen" + Mutt as in a dog with the emphasis on the first and third syllable.
  • Luclin -- I used to pronounce this "Loose"lin, but was told by the folks at Sony that they pronounce it "Luck"lin. Amazing how they can mispronounce their own game isn't it?
  • Drakkel -- "drack" + "ill". Emphasis on the first syllable.
  • Ulthork -- Ull as in "pull" + thork as in "fork". Emphasis on the first syllable.
  • Rowyl -- Rhymes with "Howl"
  • Froglok -- "frog" plus "lock". How else?
  • Solusek -- Sol as in "Doll" plus "loose" plus sek as in "wreck". Emphasis on the second syllable.
  • Well, you get the picture. Feel free to add in your own interpretation of these and other common words. Who knows, maybe we will all start to speak the same language after a while.

    I still find it incredible that people rhyme sow with cow. Everybody says that a sow is an adult female swine. But, am I the only one who knows that it also means to plant or scatter seeds, or to set in motion?

    Anyway, Verant is just plain wrong about luck-lin. I will fight that one to the bitter end. Loose-lin or Luke-lin are both acceptable however.

    Finally, I can't believe anybody pronounces Guk in any manner other than rhyming with... well the word we said most often when we were first exploring it.
    Allow me to help you all.

    Okay all, I've been reading posts for EQ since March 16, 1999, and my very first post will be on this ludicrous subject. Allakazam and all his lackeys listen up, I'm about to inform you how SoW is pronounced.
    First off, wipe that female pig / cow rhyme out of your brain. Yes, sow is a word, but this is S.o.W., a new term and an acronym. Thus, the current dictionary definition is irrelevant.
    So that leaves us with a pronounciation based on the terms that make up the word. (S)pirit (O)f (Wolf). There is only one way to pronounce the first and last letters (amazing how simple consonants can be), so I encourage you brainers out there to go ahead and sound out the 'o' in the word 'of'.

    Sounds like 'uh', doesn't it?

    So it's THAT simple. It's pronounced S-uh-W, Or very much like 'sew' with a little more depth in the middle. Now all you people (including one of my closest friends in real life) who think getting a speed boost has somthing to do with a pregnant swine, you may now feel enlightened and stop going through life incorrectly. See you in EQ :)

    Oh yeah, and mana is pronounced like Man-uh. I've heard mau-na before, but that just doesnt sound right. I think I remember hearing it that way from a character in Diablo2. Sounds...odd.

    I've always said SoW like cow. Cause sow is already a word...you know, the female pig thing.

    On the other hand, having read all this, and since SoW is after all, just an acronym (right?), I am beginning to think maybe pronouncing it 'sew' is the way to go. Er, yes.

    I still think that Qeynos should be pronounced like K-Nos, tho...it just doesnt look like Key-Nos to me.

    And Guk, of course, is Guk. Like it looks...like Luk...luck. :)

    Lol - its funny how everyone comes up with there own pronunciations(sp) for things. I always have that problem when reading books, too. I think game companys should post a list of how they intend for things to be pronounced.

    I say Mana, like 'you are a man' plus a short 'A' sound. But my roommate says mau-na, accent on first syllable. Never heard the 'mau-na' from any one else. How does everyone else say it? Just wondering...

    sow - like the female pig. it's already a word and has a set pronunciation in the dictionary ;)
    Cabilis Cab + ill + lis (as in listen)
    Sebilis - Seb(soft e) + ill +lis ,both with the emphasis on the first syllable (of course this comes for not reading the names correctly in the beginning and now I can't drop the extra L sound I added)
    Solusek - Soul + you + sek (rhymes with trek) emphasis on the second syllable

    Sukani (sue + khan + i emphasis on the second syllable :D)

Like Tier' Dal would be pronounced Tir - Dal (like the texan city dallas kinda.)

    How to speak EQ
    # May 23 2001 at 10:13 PM Rating: Decent
    Weel it appears well will someday have an official list of the EQ names and how to pronounce them care of Absor. Til then this discussion can go on for eternity and it will not change the earlier pointed out fact that how you say something is largely influenced by country of origin, and how you have always said it.

    But to add to the debate:
    1) SoW = Sew (definitely sounds faster)
    2) Sebilis = SEB-ill-iss or seb-ILL-iss depending on usage (terrible I know). If used on its own I say SEB-ill-iss (emphasis on first syllable) but I go to Old Seb-ILL-iss (emphasis on second syllable)
    3) Cabilis = CAB-ill-iss to go with SEB-ill-iss

    # May 23 2001 at 7:17 PM Rating: Default
    First of all, Luclin should not be pronounced luck-lin because of the u followed by only a c, not a ck. Thus, following trends it should be look(rhymes with pool) lin (rhymes with in).

    Secondly, and I am very adamant about this, I don't care how the people at EQ pronounce it, or how Richard Xavier pronounces it, but Tunare is pronounced tune-are-eh. There is no way that 'are' is pronounced ehr and it sounds dumb as just 'are' like the word, so the e must be accented as tune-are-eh.

    Oh, and Sol? It's a spanish word and is not pronounced soul, as in a drawn-out British pronounciation is it sohl, which is a correct Spanish pronunciation.

    Just thought I'd lay it on the line for all of you =P

    Well, EQ character names are another deal entirely...

    Firiona Vie - Fear-e-on-uh Vi
    Lanys T'Vyl - Lan-is T'-vile (short t)
    Al'Kabor - Al Kuh-bore (almost like Al Gore)
    Innoruuk - In-a-rook (like the bird or chess piece)
    Cazic Thule - Kah-zic (like cat-sick) Thuul
    Tunare - Too-nair
    Erollisi Marr - Ear-o-liss-e Marr
    Matthaniel Marr - Ma-than-yul Marr
    Veeshan - Vuh-shan
    Karana - kuh-rah-nuh
    Solusek Ro - So-lu-sec Ro
    Prexus - Precks-us
    Erudin - Err-ew-din
    Rallos Zek - Rahl-os Zeek
    Quellious - kwell-yus (like the word Quell)

    and that's with a slight southern accent

    I played for two months before I realized there was no U in Qeynos but my old pronunciation stuck...KWAYNOSE been trying to correct myslf with KAYNOSE though
    I'm also one of those that use the soft O in SoW, figured more as a POW (zip wizz) than with an animal name.
    Kaesora... first time I zoned in I kept singing to myself "Kaesora, sora whatever wil be, will be", and have been pronouncing it the same since (KAY so RAH)

    Oakay (my third major incarnation)

    I also suggest Cabiliss rhymes with Chabilis (or however you spell that nice Californian White wine).

    The biggest question is "How do you pronounce Allakhazam? (All I Can Ham?)

    Heh, this conversation is almost enough to make me come back to everquest... But wait, it's too late! I'm already coming back (run for your lives)

    Let me see here... my pronunciations are

    Sow = sew, a needle pulling thread
    Kelethin = kEll - uh - thin
    Luclin = lUck - lin
    Necromancer = nEk - romance - er
    Lord Doljonijianemorinar = Lord D. (i don't even want to go there)
    Qeynos = kwAy - nos, aka sonyeQ (who's bright idea was that anyways?!)
    Lake Rathetear = lake wrAth-uh-tear, aka lake wrAth
    Rathe Mountains = wrAth

    Course, I find that I also contradict myself. If the first E in Rathetear isn't silent, then it shouldn't be in the second one, but then again Wrath-uh Mountains doesn't sound quite right.

    Guk = gUUk, like book
    Teir'Dal = tear - dAl, rhymes with gal
    Cabilis = cAb - ill - iss
    Ankhefenmut = exp loss
    Drakkel = drahk - El (like clock)
    Solusek = So - lOO - sek

    And just to be different, I am wrong on all of them! Neener neener neener!

    wait a sec...

    After teaching high school English for 35 years, I'm surprised I can say or spell *anything* with precision; however, I've got a suggestion or three to offer.

    SoW is an acronym... base pronounciation on the words of the acronym. Since "of" is uhv... therefore SuhW... more like Sew than female pig word.

    It's DAAAAHmsk, it's a fabric IRL and that is the correct pronunciation

    I'm certain the city is CABilliss :) And the Giants live in Kayl DrakKELLL (accent on second syllable)

    My goddess is TunARRRRRR (though I agree Tun ARRR eeee would sound better).. that's the word from Verant people.

    Regarding Goner... well, when he's a 55 Mage pet solo'ing Chromadracs he's GOOOO ner. When the cleric runs out of CH's and the chroma starts winning, he becomes GONE-er :)
