EverQuest Next Landmark: Developer Diary #2

The second developer diary takes a look at "Globetrotting" through Norrath.

Sony Online Entertainment's second EverQuest Next Landmark Developer Diary introduces the concept of "Globetrotting" with Creative Director Jeff Butler and Senior Art Director Rosie Rappaport. Globetrotting is exploring the various "biomes" of the world, collecting harvestable resources, visiting other players and to check out what else has been built in the world.

A few takeaways from this installment of Landmark dev diaries are:

  1. To make the world more compelling a wide variety of biomes were created, "very contrasting areas so people get a sense of this very large world"
  2. Each biome has materials associated with it; combining these different harvestables allow for creative variance in building
  3. There will be fast travel that you can access with purchased or crafted tokens; each biome has an "access node", which will also allow travel between servers

I personally found the use of the term "biomes" interestingwhile it is accurate, in the gaming world I've only heard it used to refer to Minecraft landmass in the past, and I thought that SOE would desire to not be more associated with the hit sandbox game. Regardless of terminology, I'm happy to hear that they're creating such a wide variety of places for us to explore and find resources in. Being able to travel between servers is a terrific feature that will hopefully also be present in EverQuest Next.
