SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT UNLOCKS THE GATES OF DISCORD(tm) FOR EVERQUEST

- New Continent, Class and Alternate Advancement Abilities Mark a New Age of Discovery for Popular Online Game -

SAN DIEGO, CA - December 17, 2003 -

Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online gaming, today announced Gates of Discord(tm), a new expansion for the incredibly popular PC Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), EverQuest.

This expansion will offer exploration of a newly discovered continent; a new class (the Berserker) and Alternate Advancement Abilities that will offer new and unique skills to master. Gates of Discord will be available February 2004 at retail outlets such as Electronics Boutique, Best Buy and Gamestop, and as a secure digital download from SOE. The retail version of Gates of Discord will also come with a unique in-box gift and special in-game magic item. By purchasing the retail version of Gates of Discord, players will be able to claim the in-game item.

"Players will face the greatest threat to Norrath and the chaos of a realm yet undiscovered. Norrathians will need to unite with the Wayfarers Brotherhood to oppose this mighty force," said Michael Lustenberger, director of product marketing, Sony Online Entertainment. "In preparation for one of the most epic adventures yet, the Gates of Discord will offer players alternate advancement abilities, leadership experience, the Berserker melee class and vast new areas and zones to explore."

The Gates of Discord directs players to the west side of Antonica where Nedaria's Landing is abuzz with activity in preparation for one of the greatest and most dangerous expeditions in the history of Norrath. Stories and events will lead players across an uncharted land twisted and scarred by an unknown force. New alternate advancements will challenge the most veteran of players while the new Berserker class brings inordinate amounts of strength and bravery.

About Gates of Discord

The rumors that began in The Ruins of Kunark now hold true- a new continent has been discovered on the far side of Norrath. The Wayfarers Brotherhood will need to amass a brave and trustworthy army for an expedition of epic proportions. Join armies of adventurers on their quest to unearth long-hidden artifacts of power from temple ruins, secret catacombs, dank sewers and vast marshlands. Should you fail, Norrath, its inhabitants, and its gods may fall under control of the forces of Discord!

Gates of Discord includes the following new features:

* 100 new Alternate Advancement Abilities offer a different method of character progression with new and unique skills to master

* Gain leadership experience and unlocks many group and raid-enhancing tools

* 20 new zones, ten new instanced zones and ten new traditional zones including a huge ship city zone, complete with merchants, tradesman, and quest-givers, where you can gather your party and launch expeditions. The new combat zones are for characters level 50 and above

* New Berserker class empowers you to ravage your enemies with two-handed axes or by hurling large objects

* Discover the newly found continent of Taelosia, which holds the secrets of Norrath's future

* 20 all new NPC models make for hundreds of challenging encounters unlike anything seen before in EverQuest

* New Tribute System enhances gameplay by allowing players to choose beneficial attributes, skills, or effects through offerings at their home cities

* Dozens of new and exciting story-driven quests for the hardy adventurer

* New tradeskill recipes to produce hundreds of new items

* Unearth arcane spells, mighty weapons and other hidden treasures!

The new expansion will be downloadable via the EverQuest launch pad for $29.99. Additionally, retailers will be offering a boxed version that will carry a suggested retail price of $29.99, which includes a special in-box item and in-game item.

I would like to know when Sony is going to get off it's *** and stop putting expansions out and fix the bugs that are in the game and have been for many months if not years. From my playing (sence beta), I have not seen them care about all the bugs in the game. A prime example is Summoning/Pathing by mobs in Ssra, they can go out of the world and summon you there so that you can't get back without gate or a GM's help. This bug has been around sence Ssra was first out and NOTHING has been done about it. I know I have personally bugged it 6 times over the years. This is just one of the examples that I have seen of them putting out stuff that should still be beta and making the paying people test thier incompetence. How long are people going to put up with this game and Sony's inability to program?!?
how'd they miss it?

Actually, you only had to look as far as Velious ... the globe near the Sleeper's Tomb shows six continents.

Antonica
Faydwer
Odus
Kunark
Velious

There's been a missing continent for awhile.
Shit, I lost the world....

So far EQ has produced two lost continents, a lost lunar civilization and several lost dungeons. The only expansion that differs from this is PoP which can be seen as an advance instead of reclaiming something lost ( although it comes with lost gods, lost technology and lost power...) Now I enjoy every part of EQ, so I'm not gonna complain, but it just seems a bit unimaginative. Heck, even the clishè underwater lost civilisation would be more creative...

That said, I love EQ, it costs me too many hours a week. So naturaly I'm exstatic...

Heres to the new... lets hope it's the best one yet...

According to a friend of mine at an EB Games Retailer the projected in Store release date is Feb 14, 2004. So I know what everyone is going to be doin on Valentine's Day. Seems like SOE now wants to test the strength of peoples real life relationships as well, hehe. "Sorry dear, you know that Valentine's Day dinner I promised? I'm afraid it will have to be foraged roots and Pos of Water". Can ya feel the love? LOL

A new class, berserker. Great, but why not a Dwarf Berserker ? I mean large 2H Axes + Berserk + Ale + Dwarf = Rock on! Its so friggin obvious I cant say it enough.
RE: WTF
# Dec 18 2003 at 9:31 AM Rating: Decent
Your not kidding about that
Dwarf berserker is a no brainer...
Dwarf and barbarian as berserkers usually come to mind to most RPG'rs due to the ale, love of combat and fine weapons.
Not why they chose to use Dwarfs for this class is not clear.
a Vah Shir beserker..now that takes some serious thought to imagine why a feline race would have this class. that doesnt make sense to me.
but will wait and see.
RE: WTF
# Dec 18 2003 at 2:13 PM Rating: Default
No dwarf Beserkers? You've got to be kidding. I was really excited about the dual axes and going nuts with a dwarven equivalent of a warrior princess...

I don't see why Vah Shir = Beserker but Dwarf doesn't. It doesn't make sense to me. Nothing against Vah Shir, but when I think Beserkers I think Barbarians and then I think Dwarves immediately after. I think Ogre after that, and after that I think Vah Shir. Then gnomes. (Just kidding, though that would be cool!)

Well, anyway, if you want a Beserker Dwarf, might be an idea to feedback on test or suggest it to SOE somehow. You never know, they could add it.

I might wait a while before buying this being im only lvl 33 although by feb i might be closer to 50

pehaps the ability to gain levels up to 75 would be of more use (and zones to hunt in) at the moment once you hit 65 your stuck

i dunno ill see how much cash i have at the time

Get to 65 before you start asking for 75 levels. I haven't met a single 65th player that wouldn't quit if they increased levels to 75.
RE: Its ok but
# Dec 19 2003 at 8:15 AM Rating: Default
Let's see. I did PL my enchanter (who was lingering around 60 for months) to 65 just for looks - I never play him any more. 62-65 took 3 days.

Somehow I fail to see a reason to quit over 5 or 10 more levels. You play, you get XP, you eventually hit the level cap. Where's the problem?

i remember everyone who was 50 said they were going to quit when they raised the cap to 60, and they all came back. everyone was going to quit when they rased the cap to 65, and they came back. only reason i can think that people might actualy leave this time is maybe eq2 but i think most of the die hard players will come back becouse they are already uber in eq.

I wish they had released a new playable race too. Seems strange they released a new class, but not a new race, since the classes outnumber the races at the moment. Personally, I have been hankering to play a Dryad ever since I saw the one in PoK library,
(Illusionist Lobaen) If you hail her, she moves about. I think a dryad playable race would be cool after the animal type ones (Kitties and Froggies, though I liked both of those). Maybe in the next expansion.

Somehow I think they will release a new race soon, though, probably in another few months. They seem desperate to churn out expansions before EQ2 goes live. I think they're either trying to pay for EQ2's staff by doing this, or its a last ditch effort to make as much money as possible before EQ goes bust. I hope i'm wrong, but who knows.

Thanks!

There was a post on rpqexpert.com where someone dug into some of the files that got updated with a stealth patch and discovered what were very likely names for a lot of the new AA abilities. Some very interesting stuff.

Currently, you can have only 30 unspent AA points.
Free in game item.

Order the box version from EB games. You get the free stuff. It helps this sight. You get a discount. And a back-up disk. EB ran a pre-order
special with LDoN for free next day shipping. I had my LDoN disk loaded before the servers were back up from the update.

Gee 10 new regular zones, 1 of which you don't even hunt in. The fact that these zones are all for level 50+ is lame. Far as the other 10 spawned zones are concerned, sounds like even more zones to fight over with other group members when you get a LDON group together. I really wish they would just stop making expansions to be honest. While yes it does expand the game, you really don't get more zones to hunt in. Every time a expansion comes out people leave the places they was hunting before to come here. Then you have zones such as LowerGuk that is only used for plvlers and farmers, instead of exp like in the old days. When you think about it there is just about as many zones you can get a group in now, as there was pre luclin. People just leave 1 zone to go to another cause they think its better since its part of the new expansion.

Im not going to be a fool and preorder it and take the time to download, while other people buy it on CD and get a free item like with LDON. I preordered LDON for $23 and sure enough Circuit City had it for $20 on release day. Now my friend got it $3 cheaper and he has the cd for backup, nifty keychain, and of course the bag.

Far as that staff goes I doubt its going to be any type of ubber item. From the sounds if it Im going to guess it gives Cha.

Since Velious, the only expansion I have really enjoyed was LDON. Planes of Power is boreing since you kill really hard mobs with no loot, a joke unless your in a really good guild (other then the 1 zone, POK). If it wasn't for POK many eq players wouldn't have any use for POP. I won't even mention Ykesha its so pathetic. Other then DSP and Bazaar I never use Luclin, and thanks to all the new expansions there is hardly any zone in Velious you can actually get a group in.

They'll probably interest you more when you get a character to level 50.

Ever since late 40s I've grouped in PoP zones - lots of them. It's where I've done most of my leveling since 46 - and so does almost everyone else (assuming you can get a character to 46).

If you're going to be such a pathetic whiner, at least come up with some good arguments.

"They'll probably interest you more when you get a character to level 50"

When you click on the guy's name whose post you replied to, it says he's got a 63 druid and a 55 ranger. Good job doing your research before your BS post, dumbass.

"Ever since late 40s I've grouped in PoP zones - lots of them. It's where I've done most of my leveling since 46 - and so does almost everyone else (assuming you can get a character to 46)"

The only real reason I bought PoP was to use the books, and I SUSPECT that that's all most people usually use it for, but if somebody decides to actually fight there, or if they choose to never fight there, I'm not going to think of them as some kind of sick freak just cause they made a different choice than I did. Stop being so damn negative; it doesn't make people think you're smart just because you can post some BS rant on a message board.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 17 2003 at 6:18 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You know. I find it retarded for you to say that. So what if people move on to new zones . Thats becuase there are new items and those true hardcorse players have adventured out the previous expansion. There are always new items to go after and hunt for and this means teh new zones. Even if they didnt add zones what difference would it make. You would still hunt for new items or deal with new adventures or the game wouldbe boring. Life is never stagnant so why shoiuld a game that imitates life be that way. I would suggest you get over the fact that you can no longer find groups in zones you like. Also if you knew any better you would know that the good guilds fight in zones offered from all expansions to be able to do enjoy the overall game. If your concern is the grouping maybe you should consider playing instead of whining and maybe youd get good enough they would want you.

Wonder what races will be able to play the Berserker? If the cover art-work is any indication - a barbarian is definitely one of them.

Other eligible races probably will be humans, dwarves, ogres, trolls and iksars. The more caster-inclined races probably won't get that option. Anyone from test server confirm what races are eligible?

Ah yes, the newbie zones will be busy once again for a week or two anyway.
RE: Berserker races?

The races are Barbarian, Human, Ogre, Troll, Vashir. Other than human it makes sense since the large races tend to have less classes to choose from. beginning stats are:
TRL OGR VAH HUM BAR
STR 118 140 100 85 113
STA 114 127 80 80 100
AGI 83 70 90 75 82
DEX 85 80 80 85 80
WIS 60 67 70 75 70
INT 52 60 65 75 60
CHA 40 37 65 75 55
Electronic Deliver == Ripoff?

The in-game special item for people who pay THE SAME DAMN AMOUNT for the boxed version is really annoying. The electronic version obviously costs SOE less to deliver. They make more money on the electronic version and yet the boxed version has the special gee-gaw. </boggle>

I don't think i could have said it better. The only benefit for them to give that free stuff in a box versus download is the hope that it will bring new people to the game because they hear the word FREE. Some day though it will come to Sony's attention that customer retention is just as important as new players.

the tribute system sounds like a much needed gold sink. (I should have copyrighted that post on such several months ago, shucks)
This will cause the money supply to decrease, thus the value of money will increase and the cost of items in bazaar will go down.

Where did you go to find out info about the tribute system, to know that it sounds like a gold sink? All my char's slots are full, and even though it ain't the best stuff (see my Pulitzer-winning novel, "How To Twink A Character For Under 500pp"), it's good enough for me. So something else to spend $$ on sounds fine to me, especially if there's a (gasp!) role-playing element to it.

Keep one thing in mind....

With a money sink YES, the prices of many items will go down(because plat becomes worth more), BUT money will be harder to come by so you may have trouble affording even the lower prices.

Look at today, cars cost $20,000 for an average car and most house-holds own 2-3 cars.

In the 60's a brand new car cost $2,000 and most families could only afford 1!

Be careful what you wish for because you might get it and end up not liking it!
