LOTRO's Producer's Letter - December 2010

This month's producer's letter confirms a lot of the things the LOTRO team has been discussing in interviews around the interwebs, but it's nice to get it all wrapped up here!

Another month, another Producer's Letter from LOTRO's super busy producer, Kate Paiz! In this month's Producer's Letter, while Kate pretty much sums up what we talked about with Turbine's Adam Mersky and Aaron Campbell about half a month ago concerning Turbine's huge plans for LOTRO going into 2011, it's still great to hear just how committed Turbine is to making sure LOTRO remains truly free-to-play.

Some of the changes outlined in the letter include the reveal that the team is planning to do away with those "must-purchase" expansion packs (Mines of Moria and Siege of Mirkwood), by making the level cap and all zones available (for exploration, at least) to all players. This simply means that if players want to purchse the expansion packs, then they may and therefore retain access to the contents of the expansion pack, but if you just want to grind monsters all the way to 65 for free... well... that's also an option!

Turbine also wants some feedback from players near and around level 20 who had great difficulty advancing their epic storyline through the Lone-lands, as it required reputation with the men of Bree, but if you didn't purchase the adventure pack, then it became extremely difficult to get that reputation. At the moment, the team is either considering making the Lone-lands a free zone, or if their new "Tasks" system (essentially a quest system involving junk drops that rewards players with reputation) works well, then they can extend this Task system to more of LOTRO.

Also included in Kate's letter is the common fact that Radiance will be completely removed from the game, as well as some significant cosmetic system upgrades and non-combat pets. Truth be told, there's just a lot of information in here, so be sure to check out our interview with Adam Mersky and Aaron Campbell about Turbine's future, as well as Kate Paiz's Producers letter to get the full scoop on LOTRO going into 2011!
