Balancing Starcraft II: Are the Terran too good?

With the Intel Extreme Masters Starcraft II Tournament taking place a few days ago, many professional SC2 players around the world may be jumping ship from the Zerg to the arguably all-around better Terran

For anyone interested in the Starcraft II eSports scene, Saturday marked the conclusion of the very first Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Global Gamescom 2010 Starcraft II tournament, with a young player from Sweden, MorroW, taking the competition by force with his aggressive Reaper play as Terran. Unfortunately, however, amid the celebrations of proud Terran players everywhere, there have been rumblings of dissent from many pro gamers around the world who are asserting that this tournament has exposed some fundamental balance flaws in Starcraft II.

You see, prior to the beginning of the tournament, huge discussions were already taking place across some popular Starcraft II forums, with some of the most famous Korean, European and North American players arguing that the Terran were just too strong, especially when it came to Terran versus Zerg (TvZ) matchups. Perhaps it was fate, then, that decided that of the top eight seeds within the IEM tournament, five would be filled with Terran players, while the remaining three slots went to Zerg players. Two renowned Protoss players, White-Ra and HuK, would not play well enough to make it past the qualifiers, despite huge expectations from their fans.

During the tournament itself, spectators around the world were finally able to witness, first-hand, some of the awesome harassing powers that a good Terran possesses, as MorroW savaged his opponents with some impressive early Reaper play, thereby containing his Zerg opponents and forcing them to modify their strategies. This highly effective style of aggressive play from a Terran player, however, also showed just how few early game options Zerg players had , and even IdrA, one of the most well known Zerg players in Starcraft 2 tournament play, couldn't last long.

The problem, players are saying, comes from the incredible amount of unit options available to Terran players, combined with the sheer flexibility and power of their units. For example, while it is the Zerg who are known as having the best mobility of the three races, due to the addition of the powerful Hellion and Reaper in Starcraft 2, Zerg players are finding themselves being outmaneuvered, especially if they can't get that speed upgrade for their Zerglings fast enough. This also makes it difficult for Zerg players to mount any sort of early game offensive, thereby giving good Terran players the ability to take solid control of the map. Ultimately, many players have simply come to the conclusion that the Terran just appear to be better than the Zerg in most things, even in areas where the Zerg are supposed to be the best (mobility, expanding, map control)!

I suck regardless, so I don't notice much. However I do notice that too many players are going Terran or Protoss. I hardly ever see any Random or Zerg. This may be like the article said, balance issues, but I suck too much to notice late game.

Blizz has stated in their forums that, according to their "numbers", they see no reason for rebalancing at this time. Supposedly, the ladders in regions outside NA have more zerg players and more zerg representation in general, though I have not confirmed this personally since I do not care enough to check.

I feel that the races are relatively balanced unit-wise. It just takes more effort to play zerg well than it does to play terran well. By that I mean there are many more things to do (spawn larva, expand, scout) as zerg that are essential in most games whereas terran can accomplish the same tasks with much less effort (build extra production buildings, turtle in one base, scan from CC).

Also let's not limit the discussion to ZvT. PvT has problems of its own with marauders cleaning the floor with any low-tier gateway unit.

All that being said, I believe sc2 is very balanced for a game recently released. Sc1 took many years to balance perfectly and sc2 will be no different.
