Guildz.com, a new Guild Management Service, launches

Our friends over at Caster's Realm have launched a new service. They gave me a chance to play with it a little, and it looks like a nice service for a guild looking for a bigger online presence. Here's their press release: -------------------- LAS VEGAS, NV - July 21, 2003 - Guildz.Com Inc. announced today the public launch of a commercial service for online gaming communities. Bringing together a powerful and flexible set of tools, Guildz.Com provides subscribers with a state of the art content management system and clean professional look for as little as 60 cents a day. Guildz.Com is focused on Empowering Online Gamers. Guildz.Com has been developed by the same team who operates the Casters Realm Gaming Network (www.crgaming.com). Casters Realm has been an influential website in the Massively Multiplayer Online Games sector since 1999 with a focus on MMOGs such as EverQuest, Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars: Galaxies and more. After being involved with Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming for over 10 years, the team has a keen understanding of what is required in order to make a guild website successful. "We have put together a system which will give guilds the opportunity to have very professional looking websites with a minimal amount of work on their parts", says Greg 'Baelish' Short, CEO & Founder of Guildz.Com Inc. "As a gamer who has been involved with running a very large guild before, I know how time consuming it is just to keep things smooth in the game let alone on a website. Guildz.Com was designed to help keep guilds together and focused whether they are hard-core guilds or just groups of friends. The most important thing about Guildz.Com is that it takes a substantial burden of time off people who want to run a website for their MMOG community." The service boasts numerous features in one integrated package so that online gaming groups can find a true home for themselves out of the game. "Don't think that we will stop adding to the service", continues Greg. "We are already working on integrating direct information feeds from game providers and expanding on the number of site layouts and visual appearances. We are committed to bringing the best features we can to the online gaming community." About Guildz.Com Guildz.Com is a feature rich service providing: * "What You See Is What You Get" content editor requiring no web programming knowledge to use * Powerful forum system for group discussion * Easy to use image management system * Sub-domain provision to over 50 premium domain names * Calendar & history functions * Secured areas for private information * Dynamic member list system * And much more! The service has a base price of US$20 per month but offers discounts for 3 or 6 month plans as well as a community chest system to allow guild members to donate to the on-going costs of the website. This is more expensive than just about any other guild hosting stuff already out there, and even if it wasn't, it's got like maybe a fifth the goodies. Meh! Check out GuildPortal or ezBoard first.
Decent.

Looks like a cool idea. Sort of expensive though, the cost of bandwith is through the roof these days, though. If it's a large guild, the community chest feature could be very helpful.

20 bucks a month

What kind of crack are these folks smoking?

There are free guild management sites now, with better service for some small fees, AND, unless it is an uberguild, with manditory website participation....hardly anyone uses it anyway?

Why would I pay 20 bucks a month, which is almost 40% more than the fee for the game I am playing that I would use it for?

yea personaly I wouldnt use that service. if you want your own real domain you can get it for $17.00 for a 2 year registration and you can get hostign for around $10.00 a month. the only think you might not get for that is the WYSIWIG. I think its sad that he started out as somebody that wanted to give back to the community and then turned into sombody that wants to take from the community.
Island of Kesmai

Back in the days of Compuserve, there was a game called Island of Kesmai. Even by today's definitions, that was a MMOG, and that was 15 years ago now. At $6 per hour, you can imagine my college money vanished very quickly.

No joke not to mention Compuserve's outragious price just to use in the first place, that game was like 8 bucks an hour....Damn you Tandy

I think they mean they were among the initial concept designers back in '93. Yeah, EQ came out in '99, but think how long it took to conceptualize, let alone implement.

Regardless, what bothers me is

for as little as 60 cents a day
That's $219 per year. Unless the guild contributes cash, that is more than a guildleader may be willing to pay.
LOL

LOL If its 10 years combined... I'm hoping its a small staff! LOL
10 years in MMOG?
# Jul 22 2003 at 8:08 AM Rating: Default
How the heck have they gotten 10 years experience in MMOG's? It reminds me of seeing resumes with 10 years of web-design back in 1998.

Now, if they have previous experience in MUD's or whatever, cool, mention it, but can the hyperbole. It detracts from whatever merit the product might have.

On-line games have been around for a long time , MMOG can be listed as far back as Diablo or other on-line multi-player games . Think the first MMOG was Meridian 57 , but I could be wrong . Maybe UO .

They could mean they have a combined 10 years of online experience which includes their whole staff.
