Zombie Invasion!

With the impending release of WotLK next month, it looks like the Lich King is ramping up his campaign to cull the population of Azeroth. We have created a wiki page that will be updated regularly with information on this latest attempt from the Lich King, viewable at our wiki.

There is a new event out, which most of you have already seen and either love or hate. That's right, we're talking about the Zombie Invasion that started up with the advent of several innocuous looking crates in Booty Bay. In conjunction with our sister site, Wowhead, we have done up a wiki article to allow folks to follow the particulars of the event.

Found in the rotting diary of Eric Farrington in the dead city of Andorhal…

Wednesday

My beloved home, Andorhal, has fallen victim to an evil plague. I have witnessed the horrors of the Scourge firsthand, and seen unimaginable things. Death was not granted to my loved ones. Instead, everyone I’ve ever known has turned into monsters. Monsters of unfathomable, relentless viciousness!

I thought naught of a few illnesses, a few fevers. We continued to ship out crates of grain to Lordaeron, and we weren’t fearful of this new sickness -- we were confident our healers could handle it. I know now that was foolish, blind.

The denizens of Andorhal turned into vile zombies of the Scourge. These monstrosities no longer held any thoughts or abilities from their mortal lives. Most certain of all, they readily used new powers we had never seen before to further spread the disease and hasten the destruction of the city.

I have been hiding for two days in the sewers, but I must venture out soon to find supplies or possibly a way out of the city to the forests.

Friday

Help me, I’ve been bitten!

I cannot believe I was foolish enough to think I could sneak past all of them on the streets. The zombies are everywhere now, and Andorhal is only a shell of its former glory, a sad and twisted remnant of my beautiful home.

I can already feel the disease taking me. May the light bless me as I go to be with my family and friends once again. I’m not sure how much longer I can keep my sanity. I am weak. I hunger, and must eat...

Eat...

Brains...

There are a host of events and boss mobs you can check out during this event and PvP is enabled for both the willing and not so willing. Not only are the cities of the world being overrun with undead, there are a host of new baddies hanging out in some of the more popular dungeons spearheading this assault on Azeroth.

First off:
YES it blew.... I called blizzard and complained after a weekend of non-leveling and the blood curdling screams of frustration coming from the computer room as my entire family struggled through getting out of whatever town they were in, unable to do any leveling, and lag that made our 300k cable connection more reminiscent of 14.4 dialup...

In the end I realized it was a weekend for grinding... either as a zombie in town, or in the field. As a "hiccup" I can deal. As a change in the environment it is unacceptable. Changes that hit all realms, all zones, all cities, REGARDLESS of level.?!?!? Come on. Level 70 Elites are protectors for a reason. And the whole thing cascaded out of control. I originally postulated that this was an attempt to bind the factions together, as in War Craft 2, which does take the chill out of what a pain in the *** it was.

To give credit to Blizzard:
Nice job using the game on itself to attempt to fix the problem. Deployment of Agents of the Dawn to heal the 75% of characters that don't have disease fighting capabilities definitely made a huge difference. My current toon is a 33 Night Elf Hunter and with their deployment I stayed and fought in Stormwind, Ironforge, Dustwillow Marsh, Ashenvale, etc. It felt like it "Turned the Tide of War"... to use the War Craft 2 subtitle.

Suggestion:
If the triggering mechanism had been relocated in the code to incorporate a variable within the Characters Health metering, allowance could have been incorporated to allow the functionality of fleeing, avoidance and withdrawal. So... you wouldn't get infected upon initial hit (creating the "***** it I already a zombie" attitude) and as with all agro we could have ridden by, pissed we couldn't turn in a quest, but without the 30 to 45 min interlude in getting killed twice in order to get back on track.

first off you guys whining must not be healers...even my lowbie shammy can simply cure disease and be rid of the plague no problems. My lowbie shammy can go about turning in quests or whatever (assuming the NPCs arent dead) which even on my day 1 server they are usually alive. My main can not cure disease and it is some what annoying to get repair bills but rather than whine and complain i just avoid the cities the best i can. For those of you doing dailies or what not i have not really seen any zombie activity in the daily questing areas so im not sure how it would hinder ur boring daily grinds. The main issue i have currently (which isnt worth complaining about too much) is the fact of lag. Blizz underestimated the lag factor. Its not all to do with the zombies it has a lot to do with the new achievements. When a player who hasnt logged on since the last patch logs on the server has to check for every achievement this puts some serious lag on the server. I just dont understand why people think its such a terrible thing. Blizz is trying to add a little fresh content to be fun for everyone while there really isnt much to do while waiting on the expansion. Blizz knows most people dont care about getting new gear because it will soon be replaced.
Fun if you're higher level

My problem is that I just started playing WoW a few weeks ago. My complaint with this event is that at my low level and general unfamiliarity with the game as a whole makes it frustrating in the extreme.

I'm such a low level that the hordes of ?? player zombies everywhere are kicking my ***, so no playing the part of the good guy and helping out.

On the flip-side, I can't join in the brain nom'ing fun and be a zombie because all the guards kill me quick or the higher level healer pcs take me appart.

I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to do and I'm not having fun at all. Had I started playing during this event, I'd have canceled. This thing is incredibly frustrating and unfun for new players. If I had a higher level character, I supposed I'd be having more fun playing part of this world event and doing the quests and what not, but as it is, I can't go anywhere any of that stuff is without dying every couple of minutes.

I really want to like the event, I'm just not able to. Poorly though out execution. I'll just go play something else until it's over. Sad too, because it sounds like fun.

Wouldn't mind the zombies so much if it wasn't for the lag that seems to come with them. I took a port to shat last night last night after my group finished CoT, and sat in the 'loading' screen for about 2 minutes... When I finally regained control I was already a zombie...

I turned around and jumped in the portal to darnassus only to be hit with another long load time, by the time I came around this time I was dead... bummer.

I've had some fun playing a zombie, and don't mind fighting them off, it does add a bit of a new twist to the game. But the lag is ruining it for me... and I've never really had problems with lag before now either. No fun if you can't fight back :(

Either way I think I'm avoiding the major cities until this finally ends. Funny part is next instance I run I'm actually hoping for one of those prankster mages who tries to send people to wonderful places like theramore and exodar... or will they just send me to shat now instead? XD

I started playing WoW in the weeks leading into the BC expansion. I almost, but not quite, leveled fast enough to participate in that World Event. Everyone who was involved said they had fun, and I regretted having missed it, even though in the gear I had I would have been dead meat.

Now, I cannot avoid the World Event no matter what I do. It wasn't all that bad while the healers were readily available, but now, good grief! Any trip into a city is more dangerous (and expensive) than being out in the wild.

A lot of the zombie players are pursuing this event with gusto because they were bored and not having fun with WoW while they awaited WotLK. They scream and holler about players that try to stop the infestation that are interfering with their fun. What they forget is that their fun is interfering with the fun of others.

My solution to my boredom was to create a new character and level it up. Am I the King of Bad Timing or what? Every trip into a city is a series of corpse runs. There's a Zombie! WHAP! I'm a Zombie! WHAP! I'm a Ghost! Rinse, Repeat. It takes me longer to train and gear up after I level than it takes me to actually level.

If I had been forced to deal with this idiocy when I first started playing WoW, I would have un-installed the game. I wonder how many new customers Blizzard is losing to this World Event, who are trying the game for the first time. We veteran players know that things will get back to normal eventually, but I don't think new players would have the patience for getting ganked (twice) every time they turn around.

There should have been a way for people to "opt out" and still keep playing.

Nerd rage much Vairogs? who seems more disturbed here than the other 5 posters combined. We will start off with the declaration that this IS a game, not a plague, theres a plague within the game, but its still a game, and it IS, in fact, by design...meant to be fun. I dont actualy see any whinning here, or it might be i haven't had my daily g.n.e.r.d. treat. I suggest get out of the major cities where the main problem lies and get some of the exploration achievements done perhaps make quick use of the new tracking ability of lowbie quests, or some reputation gains by entering outland dungeons...where it seems the plague is not present. Otherwise know where your healers are, conduct your business as quickly as you can, and get back out of the city. Now if your in a guild called Knights of the silver hand, Guardians of Azeroth, or any combination suggesting the protection of the known kingdoms whatever your faction, and you deliberatly go zombie on us, shame on you :). Now myself and other GMs i know have taken full advantage of this event to cleanse (no pun intended) the guild of those that have violated the mission of the guild and promote the zombie issue beyond what the scripts have provided. In this case as it is of no surprise, the less mature and more dramatic players. As of this morning 4:25mst i have removed 42 members mixed mains and alts (all 70s)
with a modest 112 members left over to sift through in the weeks to come. Ok i admit some were already slated for removal, those were the first examples ofcourse.

Sadly the only way to opt out of it is to not play the game. I know several people for whom that's become the option.

My most 'favorite' moment so far has been the following quandary:

A player zombie comes into Area 52 and heads towards you.

Do you:
(a) Kill it, and get killed by the guards?
or
(b) Don't kill it, and let it kill you (and then you get killed by the guards)?

Oh the insane jollity of the whole event. Reminds me of Everquest classic's "GM Events" aka "How many players can we kill today?"

    NOT FUN

This event if you want to call it that has been going on for too long. The 1st day ok this is not that
bad I can get away from them and do my thing. Today, 6th or 7th day, OMG WTF, When is this going to end?
When is the last time I checked my auctions? Zombies everywhere! Shat, Org.... This is B.S. I hate this, logging. Blizzard pull your head out of your AZZ, this event should of been over long ago. This is way past getting old, this event should be voluntary and not forced PvP. Childern need not reply, you obviously do not have anything else to accomplish in this game so FU all.

so far i've:

been turned into a zombie 37 times

gone from 100% durability to 0% 17 times (in mostly epic and blue plate)

had my two alts (one on this account; one on another...RAF ftw) killed, while questing, 73 times

spent approximately 9hrs as a zombie doing no dailies, leveling, gear grinding

.....and yet i'm still having fun. i can't believe some of you are actually WORKING in this game. there's more to this game than gear grinding and dailies; learn to have some fun.

i was absolutely pissed when BT came out and there was no event for it, because up until that point every end-game raid had had an event (AQ, Naxx i count as end game). and then BT was just thrown out like it was some ****-*** 10man.

i'm glad blizzard decided to do a world event, and i hope they do world events for every single end-game raid that comes out.

there is NO reason to cry that you can't do dailies, gear grind, or level.

Leveling: you should have no trouble with leveling; think of it as World-pvp...and avoid it (i do most of the time on my alts)

Dailies: they're still going to be there after Wrath

Gear Grind: trust me, there will be gear-quests to switch out any greens/blues you have in the starting zone of northrend...just like there was in TBC

People play this game for many different reasons. Want to world PvP 24/7?....those people can join a PvP realm. Like to quest and RP? There's a choice for those who wish to do that. Want to explore...then go. Want to just kill stuff....there's a choice for those people also.

The problem I have about this event is that it takes most of the choices away from the player. I needed to run and go get food, drinks, ammo, and other supplies for both myself and members of our raid group. So I hearthed out...went to Shatt and all.....ALLLLLLLL of the NPC's who sold or repaired were DEAD. While I was looking for one to respawn...I was infected...and wouldn't you know it....The healer is also down....so I die. By the time I run back to my corpse, one of the repair NPC's is up again, so I quickly run over and before I can get there, he is fighting with another zombie....he's down, and I'm a zombie again.

To make a long story short...this went on for quite a while, and it resulted in several of the raid members leaving to go try and find their own resupplies in other cities...with pretty much similar results.

In the end...this "Event" caused our raid to fall apart.

And BTW.....You say "The dailys will still be there after Wrath...." Yes, while that's technically true...why do people 'DO' the dailys? To make money, right? Well, after the release of Wrath when you can GAIN EXP at 70 again....no more phat daily loot....you'll get a few coins and exp.....just like BEFORE you turned 70 with all the other quests.

So yeah...people unable to do the dailys are being kinda screwed by this event to the tune of both HOURS lost waiting on NPC's to respawn to GET the dailys...and to TURN IN the dailys. It takes longer to do both those than to actually DO the daily. Not to mention the gold lost spent on repairs.....{sigh}

If time=money {which it does} If you add the gold I have directly lost from repairs to the gold lost not being able to AH effectively and do dailys plus time LOST due to this event, I would estimate I have lost about 600+ gold so far from this "Event" and related crap.

I concur... The expense was huge and I didn't calculate it till reading this post. Potions, scrolls, spells, effects all squandered. Cost of dealing with rez sickness to avoid reclaiming your body in a sea of zombies. What a pain in the ***.

Cool idea and lore- and at first I was so excited and impressed, glad to have joined my friends on a new server but now...

But now the event, while very probably fun for players who were bored of the endgame while they wait for the expansion, has become horrible for everyone else. It's impossible to ignore and there is no way to participate with a newer character. It would be one thing if the game had changed temporarily to be different for everyone, even very different. But what has happened is that for some of us it has temporarily become a non-game. Between the lag and the zombies, they might as well just be in maintenance mode right now, our subscription fees slowly trickling away into the black hole...

Heck, if they even just made zombification turn you into a cookie-cutter level 70-ish mob so any lowbie that got infected could then have fun eating brains, that would have been great! But instead any character much below 70 becomes... Well basically just a corpse. Twice. Not exactly fun. :/

I'm having fun with the event overall but it is getting a tad crazy. When all of the Argent Healers start chain dying, it's time to run and hide!
