Legends of Norrath: Player Spotlight

With the recent release of the Legends of Norrath: Inquisitor trading card game set, I thought it was a good time to sit down with Davon "Uway" Clay, who is leading in tournament competition and currently ranked #4 on the Leaderboards, in order to get some insight into not only his LoN success, but his thoughts on the game and the recent expansion. Here's what he had to say:
Allakhazam: First off, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us!  So that our readers can get to know a little bit more about you, can you share with us your gaming background and what MMO (if any) you're currently playing?

Davon: I have been playing EverQuest 2 since 2005 and I have watched the game go through some serious changes that were good and bad but overall for the best of the game. I have a deep history with console RPG and Strategy games with one of my all time favorites being Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, for the original Playstation.

Allakhazam: Is the Legends of Norrath trading card game your first TCG, or have you been involved in others?  Can you tell us a bit about that?

Davon: Legends of Norrath is the first TCG that I have aimed to be competitive in, though as a kid I did fool around with MTG.
Allakhazam: When the Legends of Norrath first came out, what were your initial impressions?

Davon: My initial impressions of LoN were not good at all; when the game first came out it was during a time when we (the EQ2 Community) were ready for some new content to raid. After giving LoN a try though, I found myself filling a void that was not met otherwise by my gaming appetite.

Allakhazam: Of the archtypes available in LoN, what is your favorite one to play, and why?  Which do you like the least?

Davon: Of all the available archtypes in LoN I would have to say the priest class is my absolute favorite hands down because it is the most versatile for creating winning tournament decks. I don't have a least favorable archtype but I will say that I am never want to be at the opposite end of a mage that has Fiery Inferno w/o any disables in my hand.

Allakhazam: The new expansion, Inquisitor, has just been released.  How do you think it compares to the rest of the sets (Oathbound and Forsworn)?  Which of the sets is your favorite and why?

Davon: The new expansion Inquisitor brings some pretty good cards that has helped build on and evolve the strategies in the Legends of Norrath TCG. Oathbound still owns all three sets, but I like the Inquisitor expansion more than the Forsworn.

Allakhazam: In tournament play, many times it is luck of the draw, yet you have consistently won matches.  What philosophy can you share with us about deck building for optimum success?

Davon: For tounaments I try to go with a deck that I feel will counter what I believe the majority of the field will be playing. In fact we just had our Monthly Championship Qualifier for the month of March; I correctly guessed that most of the playing field that I would encounter would be Barbarian Hunter strategies that depend on having lots of unit support to either keep their barb hunters alive or recycle them back into their hands from the graveyard. To counter this deck style I ran a Dark priest with an emphasis on destroying units while keeping my avatar's health maxed and completing quests when it was safe to.

Allakhazam: Without giving too much away, are there any game play strategies you can share with us to help other players?

Davon:
Players should always define a strategy and include only cards that will help support that strat.

Allakhazam: If you could, what is the one thing you would change within Legends of Norrath?

Davon: Playing high cost items isn't very viable in tournaments because there are lots of low power cards that can destroy them or put them back into their owner's hand; I have came up with 2 solutions to this problem: 1. Giving items a limited amount of turns in which they cannot be destroyed (depending on the type) or 2. Items in LoN should be divided into tiers such as treasured, legendary, and fabled (few items would be fabled) with the legendary and fabled items getting tokens when they are played. These tokens can then be removed to prevent said item from being destroyed.

Allakhazam: Which is your favorite card of all available, including the new expansion?  Why?

Davon: Bracers of Forbidden Rites is my Favortie card in all of LoN; this card should be in EVERY Dark Priest deck no matter the strat they are using. It has dark faction but it only costs 1 power to play; a player can exert the bracers and remove 2 of their own level tokens from a quest to heal 2 damage (3 if they are dark aligned) on their avatar. I noramlly will not even play the bracers unless I am going to use its effects that turn.

Allakhazam:
Last, but not least, pirates or ninjas?

Davon: Pirates have talking parrots. nuff said.

Thanks, Devon, for taking the time with us! And good luck in future tournaments!
