Mana Cap Change is Coming!

In EQLive's Developer's Corner, Absor has posted two Quotes from EQ's Lead Designer, Rich Waters, concerning the Mana Cap...
Absor Station Admin posted 08-09-2002 10:16 AM Hi all. I just wanted to bring to you a comment from Rich about the way items affect mana and the ‘mana cap’. quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, The mana cap has been a big topic lately, so I'd like to take a minute to address it. Mana caps have been in EverQuest since the game was released. They haven't been changed, made more restrictive, or added at a later date in order to keep casters down. The mana cap as it is now has been there since you created your character, and only recently become a topic of concern for players. Most things in EverQuest have a point of diminishing returns - a point where adding more of a resource yields little or no improvement. This is most obvious in your basic stats, where you can easily see that after your strength score hits 255 it does you no good to put on more strength enhancing gear. These kinds of caps aren't intended to cause you distress, and in many ways they can help support a well balanced game system. While we have an appreciation for the benefits that stat caps can bring to a system, we're also willing to look at things like this with an objective eye. The mana cap on worn items has been in since release, and hasn't come up before as an issue that players felt overly limited by. With all the attention focused on the cap in recent days, the dev team looked it over and we agree - there's no reason to place an artificial cap on mana enhancing items. On test server now, we've changed the rule so that players get full value from all mana increasing worn items. We expect this will go live with the next patch. Thanks for bringing your concerns to our attention, ____________________________ Rich Waters Lead Designer, EverQuest Sony Online Entertainment -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Rich. Absor Station Admin posted 08-09-2002 12:20 PM One additional clarification: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This change just affects + Mana items. We didn't change the way a players mana is calculated from intelligence or wisdom, and we're happy with how that part of the system works. - Rich

Mana Pool Max

Ah, OK, so if your mana pool was at 4126 from your base and your INT or WIS items, depending on what kind of caster you are, and you had items that added 400 more mana, it would not do you any good.

From what I read you could only have around 4126 mana with the cap in place. Now since they removed the cap all your +mana items will be counted and if the number is higher then 4126 then the new number is want your mana is at so you can now break 5k on mana.

What was the mana cap from items?
Cap taken off +Mana items only

+WIS items added when your allready at your WIS cap, (255 I guess), will do nothing, but equip a +Mana item and you will get more mana, thats all they mean. Thats what I think they mean.

your WIS 255, add more WIS, still 255
your WIS 255, add a +Mana item, you have more mana.

remember WIS adds Mana for druids, now more mana only thru +Mana items.

from what I've read it looks like they just removed the cap on +mana items, the +wis and + int gear is unaffected.

Not sure how this will help my druid...
Good news but does it change anything?

This sounds great..especially for my 47th rank druid who is at wis of 205 but does it really change anything? The need for resist gear at the higher levels normally causes you to make a decision on higher resists versus more wisdom for mana. Will taking off the wisdom cap change that decision process? Having wisdom of 255 with low resists will still get you toasted!

I'd be interested in what some of you with casting characters over the 50th level think?

Aye, it will indeed change things, but not necessarily in a good way.

Look at it this way:

       WIS  = x mana
+mana items = y mana
 total mana = z mana

Z is what was capped! So a person with less than 255 wis and a lot of +mana items could have had just as much mana as a person with 255 wis and the same +mana items, because of the cap.

With the cap gone, that is no longer the case!

In other words, giving up WIS (bringing you below 255) in exchange for resists will definitely have an impact on your mana pool now. (With the +mana items being equal) Whereas, with the cap in place, it might not have, because you might still have hit the cap with your +mana items.

With the cap gone....you really will have to decide between mana and resists!

Maybe I'm mis-interpreting this. To me it sounds like the cap is on +mana items. Is this actually a cap on +mana/int/wis items?

Thanks
