2.3 New Leveling Info

Blizzard announced some weeks ago that they would be making change to the old world leveling grind, making it faster in anticipation for Wrath of the Lich King.

Smaller amount of xp needed per level, more xp per quests completed, tons of new quests in Dustwallow Marsh as well as revamp of many old instances are all on the horizon.

As many of you already know we've been working on changes designed to improve various aspects of leveling for those making their way to level 60. These improvements, available in patch 2.3 will come in many forms and should significantly contribute to a more fluid and enjoyable leveling experience .

The first notable change was to simply reduce the amount of experience needed each level by approximately 15% between levels 20 and 60. Please note that when the patch is released, characters affected by this change will remain at their current level percentage. For example, if a character had exactly 50% of the current level's total experience before this change went into effect, the character would still have exactly 50% of the current level's total experience; only now fewer points would be needed to level.

Questing plays a very large role in World of Warcraft, especially while leveling and we felt that improvements to this front were necessary as well. Experience gained for completing quests (on average) between levels 30 and 60 is being increased. The increase becomes more substantial as you make your way towards 60. Additionally, many outdoor elite mobs will become non-elites, making many quests which were previously too difficult or required a group much easier and offer the same rewards (in some cases better!). A good example of this change would be Stromgarde Keep in Arathi Highlands, which will become a solo friendly environment when patch 2.3 goes live.

We've also added approximately 60 new quests in Dustwallow Marsh. This should help players who find themselves lacking quests in the 30-40 range. The Steamwheedle Cartel is building the new town of Mudsprocket in south-west Dustwallow Marsh, so you'll have to wait until construction is complete to learn more about these changes.

We're making other improvements to pre-bc leveling dungeons that players will likely find most agreeable. The level range for most every dungeon is being adjusted so that there is a much smaller range between the level of mobs found early in the dungeon to those found towards the end. For example, Shadowfang Keep is currently designed for levels 18-25 which means that right now, players who are towards the bottom of that range (18) will find it nearly impossible to complete the dungeon, while players towards the top of the range (25) will find most of the dungeon trivial. Using our new model (similar to what you'll notice with Burning Crusade leveling dungeons), Shadowfang Keep is being retuned for levels 18-21.

We also want to make running a leveling up dungeon more worth while. In addition to increasing quest experience for dungeon quests, we're also upgrading all pre-bc dungeon boss drops to blue quality items. Some examples are listed below:

Ragefire Chasm

Robe of Evocation old: +3 Stamina, + 4 Intelligence

Robe of Evocation new: +4 Stamina, +5 Intelligence, and +5 Spell Critical Strike Rating

Deadmines

Smite's Reaver old: +2 Strength, +1 Stamina, +1 Spirit, 11.1 dps

Smite's Reaver new: +2 Strength, +3 Stamina, +2 Hit Rating, 14.5 dps

Shadowfang Keep

Robes of Arugal old: +3 Agility, +5 Stamina, +9 Intelligence, +10 Spirit

Robes of Arugal new: +3 Spirit, +5 Stamina, +9 Intelligence, +12 Spell Damage

As you can see there is much in-store for the next major content patch, particularly a number of changes designed to benefit players who are leveling a character. Though we've given you a few examples of the things to come, we think everyone will be pleasantly surprised when they see the full extent of the changes discussed above.

Anyone know when patch 2.3 will be out? I can't tell if it's at the same time as WotLK or not.

I have a lvl 49 warlock which is my main, and i am what u would call a casual player who normaly plays on my own, i think this new exp idea is good as im not always on to play and grind the lvls like i used to when i was younger. I also think for the players who find the time to play alot this could be a bad thing because if they are not much of a raider or a pvp player they gonna get board when they hit lvl 70/80. However someone made a comment before saying wow is an easy game so i agree with them, if your looking for a bigger challange then maybe wow isnt for you.

Theres only one thing im not sure on.... changing group quests easy and turning mobs non-elite... yea i missed out on some of these quests because i didnt find anyone to do them with but then again i didnt use the "find group" in-game. for people who have a lil more time on their hands group elite quests are great so they might feel like they are missing when when the patch is here, but then again for people who dont have as much time this is great..... i dont think theres ever gonna be a right ot wrong answer here theres 2 sides to the story which no one is wrong. if to many people complain then i say make a poll for it.

anyways ill stop blabing on, my main point being i agree with what blizzard are doing, as long as its still a bit hard to reach 80 when its out :)

Keep up the good work Blizzard!

I was thinking about the Group quest thing a while ago as I am mainly a solo player due to work commitments etc. I usually left the elite group quests till they were on the final level before they turned grey and did them then...which made me 5-8 levels above the 'recommended' level. I got to thinking, why not have an option where you can choose the quest mode for the group/elite quests. If you want to solo the quest the mobs become non-elite and if you want to group it then they are elite.

yea that seems like a good idea, but to stop everyone turning it into non-elites your can lower the drop rate if you decided to go non-elite. i have no idea how they would do this turn on/off elite thing tho.
This is pretty cool!

There are a few games out there that do something a little different, but this is a nice push to lvl. Some games allow you after reaching a characters max lvl, lets you start every new character at like 35 to bypass the lower lvl gringind (if you choose). The thought is that you have already grinded to get to the max lvl, the reward is to eliminate the early hustle. Now I know lvl 35 in WOW would be crazy. But lvl 20 would be okay, and again this was optional. But hey, the exp increase is just as sweet.

This doesn't change how easy the game is, the game is easy to begin with, at least now we won't have to waste even more time doing the easy stuff. That's the only "difficult" thing IMO, the daily grind and doing quest after quest after quest. Thank god they are making that go by faster. And the changes to pre-BC instances is really cool IMO, add a little more life to old world content.

Ya man, I've got a mage that is halted at 31 because I can't stand playing him. IMO Mages level slow enough in the lower end as it is, this'll help me get it to 70. Of course, by the time this patch hits, I'll have 4 70s, so I don't really >>need<< another, but hey why not? It'll keep me busy in Wrath, lol.

You wanted to play a hard game, you'd play Lineage or FFXI, not WoW. Making a easy game easier just makes it less of a pain in the neck to do anything.

I think its great, now all the classes I want to pvp with but cant will be easier to level because I feel once ive done all the quests once they are kinda pointless.

I'd heard this was coming, but I was hoping it would hold off.... Most of the game is leveling your character, and for those of us who do not raid, it is really the only part of the game. By making the quests easier and the xp required smaller, they are basically taking away from my favorite part of the game. For a casual player, there isn't a whole lot to do when you hit the level cap other than start a new character. For someone like me, who enjoys the storylines for all the quests, this also means that quests will go grey faster since you are leveling faster. So, you either spend your time doing overly easy quests to see the storyline, or you miss out by moving on. I already have trouble getting all of my quests done before they go grey. I also wish they wouldn't make the group quests easier. What's the fun going to be in the game if they make it too easy? Besides, for new players, they won't be getting the practice at lower levels to be good at working in a group when they hit the harder stuff later on.

My two cents, take it or leave it. Not that it really matters what I think....

Well, i'm not saying your wrong or right.. just making a comment... With all the quests in the world it's kinda hard not to go grey even without the increase of experience, however my main comments are about "what to do at lvl cap" as the increase in experience and lower requirement for level is only through levels 20-60, and the xp increase for quests is only levels 30-60, either way, it does not effect end game, and even if it did.. experience means nothing to a level capped character except more money. If your only in it for the quests then once you hit cap you'll more than likely reroll anyway. There are now 4 main story arcs for each faction, for the most part you complete the Draenei and Blood Elf storylines by lvl 20, then verge with the others. 3 Story arcs, 5 races. Your bound to repeat quests and run out of story eventually. You finished a lvl 70 undead, you reroll a blood elf, with a few here and there until lvl 60, it's all repeat of the undead character anyway. Also, a comment about being a casual player... if you don't play that much wouldn't you want to get somewhere faster in the hour or two a week that you play?

Once again... i restate... just commenting.

I whole-heartedly agree with your post. I too am someone who loves story and leveling and think this will take a little bit from it (I still read all quests and what they say). This can be promising still for people like us if they end up not going with 15% and maybe going with 5%-10% change instead.
