Chocobo Racing Q&A

Forum Thread for Chocobo Racing Discussion!

Hello Zam Community members! This is Snakeeye. I’m in charge of development for both Chocobo Raising and Chocobo Racing. Thank you for all the many opinions and suggestions you submitted!

I’m really happy that we received so many contributions these last two weeks.
Between my other development tasks, I’ve been looking at all the unique and interesting ideas being debated in North America, Europe, and Japan.

I want to keep reading your conversations and debates, but then I’d never be able to get started on development. :)
At this point, I feel like most of the issues have been discussed to some extent. Now, in order to encourage more in-depth ideas and discussion, I’d like to talk about Chocobo Racing in two separate sections:

(1) An outline of plans discussed within the development team based on your opinions and requests
(2) Impressions of your opinions and answers to your questions

We’ve gathered your opinions and requests and we’ve discussed them internally.
Some of the ideas were close to the direction we envisioned, and we would like to incorporate those ideas as much as we can. While reading the following examples, please keep in mind that that this is just part of the direction we’re starting to head at this point, that the names and functions are temporary, and that these may not be released all at once depending on when they are added to Chocobo Racing. We’ve received so many great suggestions, but we won’t be able to include everything.

Here is a general outline of Chocobo Racing:

- Since players use different connection speeds, racing will be controlled automatically to keep things fair.
- By selecting riders (NPCs) with their own sets of tactics, players can devise plans that best suit their chocobo's abilities.
- Your chocobo’s attributes will have an influence on the race.
- Not only does a player select a rider, they can also use items or provide equipment for a chocobo before the race to increase the chocobo’s abilities.
- There will be two different kinds of races: “public races” which will be implemented with a ranking system, and “private races” which can be enjoyed individually or as a party.
- There might be special races you can participate in when you collect enough points. (Perhaps called “Choco Points”?) However, we haven’t finalized these details yet.
- There may also be special crown races featuring famous NPCs. (Perhaps with the likes of Prince Trion or Dr. Shantotto!)

In order to prevent cheating, we have decided not to allow any timing-related controls during the race. This is a requirement, so unfortunately we can’t incorporate this no matter how exciting it might be.
Therefore, it’s important to prepare the for chocobo race before the race starts.

Also, regarding congestion issues, it’s possible we can expect some benefits from “private races.” Much like Assault, there will be numerous entrances, and if only participants are allowed to enter, we can have not only private races, but also small events.

Next are some of our impressions of your opinions and answers to your questions.
Between the different regions, some of the issues were the same and some were different, so it would be difficult to list them all here. Therefore, we’ve sorted them into major categories in order to answer as much as possible.
I’m also planning to answer questions not listed here in the near future, so please be patient until then.

How and Where Chocobo Racing Takes Place

Q: Please make Chocobo Racing available not only to high-level players but also low-level players.
A: We’ll make chocobo races available to every player no matter what their level.

Q: Does it take place at certain times like Ballista? Can we have a chocobo race anytime we want?
A: It’ll depend on the rules of the race; however we are currently planning to make Chocobo Racing enjoyable both ways.

Q: How many players and chocobos are able to participate in a race?
A: For display and performance reasons, we probably won’t be able to put too many players and chocobos in each race. In real-life horse races, we see 16 horses run in the same race, but I think it will be less than that.

Q: It might be interesting if the race continues after a player has registered their chocobo even if the player logs out.
A: I think it’s a good idea, but it might be difficult to implement.

Q: I don’t want Chocobo Racing to be like Besieged. It’s difficult to participate sometimes because of congestion. It might be great if we have to buy entry rights or establish some type of requirements so no one will be able to enter chocobo races with the same chocobo over and over.
A: We will continue to investigate congestion issues and ways to prevent them. We might implement minor limitations as a countermeasure. As I mentioned in the outline section, we might be able to create a system which can ease congestion. We’ll think about this a little more within the development team.

Q: Where is the chocobo circuit located? Is the “Treasures of Aht Urhgan” expansion pack required?
A: Where is the Chocobo Circuit located in Vana’diel? NPCs here and there will tell you where the circuits are once Chocobo Racing is introduced. Realistically though, some dedicated racing circuits will be used, so you will need to install and register the “Treasures of Aht Urhgan” expansion.

About Chocobo Racing

Q: Since chocobos are not controllable by players during a race, is it possible to have simple commands to, for instance, accelerate our own chocobo during a race?
A: We understand the desire for player-controlled chocobos during a race. However, due to differences in network speed, use of third-party tools and other network issues which would spoil the fun of a race, it would be difficult for players to have control of their chocobo during a race.

Q: How about allowing card battle-styled chocobo controls during a race?
A: Although card battle is very different from the game’s mechanics, it may be a good idea. We might able to use this idea for the time when players prepare before the race.

Q: I really want team battles!
A: This idea is pretty interesting. We’ll look into it.

Q: Make sure that players with slower network connections aren’t at a disadvantage.
A: Yes, that’s our plan. ;)

Q: How about races restricted only to veterans or chocobos under a certain age (for 1-year-olds, etc)?
A: Unfortunately, there is a strong possibility we won’t provide information to players such as their chocobo’s age. However, we’ll try hard to allow you to save your chocobo’s racing history.

Q: It will make races more exciting if there are factors such as disqualification, etc.
A: I see. This may cause players stress if it just ties them down, so realistically it may be difficult, but we will think about it.

Q: What do you think of survival races where monsters chase chocobos to the goal?
A: This may be possible as one of the rule sets. I’ll take note of it.

Q: I hope there will be various types of courses and races.
A: We may be able to add this in the future. However, I’d like to prepare the basic rules to “race a certain distance” first, then add variations later over time.

About Chocobo Stats

Q: Will different chocobo breeds have their own specific abilities?
A: I would like to be able to express abilities depending on breed to some degree.

Q: I would like stats such as health condition, weight, fatigue, etc. for my chocobo.
A: It may be good to reflect these elements when a chocobo has been racing without rest.

Q: I want chocobo longevity, succession, genealogy, etc.
A: Don’t worry! We have implemented similar elements into Chocobo Raising. However, please understand it will not be as detailed as an entire game based on raising a chocobo.

Q: How about having chocobos learn abilities such as “Focus” or “Self control” which can be set freely?
A: Similar to a Blue Mage setting spells, right? It’s natural for a chocobo to learn abilities, but I think being able to freely set abilities on a chocobo treats them too much like an item. However, abilities that affect a race are a great idea and we would love to give that a try.

Well, it seems this message has become much longer than we originally intended!

I hope that you can give us your opinions on the current state of affairs after reading the material mentioned above. We continue to look forward to hearing from all of you!

Chocobo dungeon...

Now what would be nice is to have an event where we can have a race through dungeons (w/ mobs and everything) like the lowbie events of old. Where two ppl talk to a moogle, and then get teleported into a dungeon w/ their chocobos at different, but equally distanced points from the finish line, and the two have to try to run through it, get off their choco and click on the finish point, to get warped out and... you get the point...

Anyways, just an idea to go along w/ the choco raising/racing for a future event, since we know EVERYONE is getting kinda bored of the current ones (though they are fun, new events would be even funner:P).

On the lines of battle games how about a chocobo-based chess-like game involving several players (or something involving strategy =P)? Since we know there are different breeds of chocobos (knights chocos and those short chocos (I didn't quite memorize them yet =/), people can all enter their own chocobos, the breed and attributes affecting play style and how it benefits a team and such. It sounds like FFXI's partying system in a way but perhaps it could be tweaked so that everyone has a fair shot. The idea kinda reminds me of that rock-paper-scissors game from Star Ocean 3 but that's not what I'm really going for, granted, I know a lot of these ideas sound very difficult and time consuming, to put much depth into chocobos =D

Types of races:
Sounds great NPCs racing except Dr. Shanotto, she would probably warp to the finish line, she is devious. Race Cacto Rapido in the Desert - NM racing events or event NPC Beastman Racing events. Maybe you have to do some quests so that you are allowed to race those NMs or Beastman.

Battle Games:
A form of Joust? or Polo? or a mixture of the two where you can hit players, chocobos only get exhausted or fatigue, and players take so much damage that they (rider & chocobo) walk versus run while they recover. A variation on Brenner.

Items for your chocobo:
I see this pretty cool. Quests where you get saddles: racing, extended riding, training. Chocobo harness - similar to saddles types. Pimp My Chocobo!

Just a wild thought: license plates for chocobos - I<3Greens - customizable, lol. or bumper stickers.

Cards? When did this become a Yugi-yo or card trading thing. Maybe to help train your chocobo but racing, does not sound good at all.

Racing arenas:
Well, there are areas on the map that still not open. Maybe expand on those map areas as arenas, allowing for world wide racing.

Gambling:
This is going to be interesting. I wonder if bookies will be there, if you dont pay up they break your legs, lol. Or your Chocobo is sold to KFC - Khazam Fried Chocobo restaruant chain.

Well, I am rambling...I posted a ton of thoughts at my forum:
http://forgottenchaos.forumwise.com/forgottenchaos-thread206.html

Read the Tianjinn posts, thats me. I am still adding to my rambling thoughts there.

Samples thoughts:
Sanctioned racing, NASCAR? National Association of Super Chocobos and Advanced Riders (trademark in FFXI no stealing my acronym) besides took me 30 seconds to come up with something.

Chocobo Dealership? New and Used.

Will racers have groupies? Hehehe....

Chocobo Drag racing? Legal or illegal you be the judge.

Enjoy, Long forum posts...

Longer leg

Hope you can bred them with longer leg to make it faster, short leg would be slower, if fat.. make it slower, slim would make it faster, just wondering how you can compare that to a Galka riding a choco in comparison to a Taru-taru.

I'm interested in the gambling aspect of it. Maybe you can be a leicned booky with SE generated odds to work with if they don't provide chocbo stats.

I always felt that gambling would be better (and profitable) if SE controlled it more

It would be interesting if the rewards for winning races, instead of trophies, different equipment for your chocobo, such as a saddle. And in relation to our chocobos having "equipment," would we be able to /check other people's chocobos?

i've kinda been hoping they would make a kind of chocobo mounted battle system, kinda like ballista on chocos...that would really add some variety to the chocobo raising system i think. if you read the descriptions of the chocos that was posted a while back, it says something about the green being bred for speed, red for strength and power in battle, and so on and so forth. that's the reason i think it might be fun to have a Chocoballista or something...(i suck at thinking up names >.>;;;)
Eye candyyyy!

Super mega bonus points for the image, perfectly sized for my desktop. This is a beautiful image. And of course thank you for the answers to our questions and suggestions. Nobody can say that SE doesn't care about our opinions and ideas (well, nobody reasonable). You make me feel warm and fuzzy, like I've swallowed a cupid worm.

In regards to the equipment options for racing... I would love to see these reflected on the chocobo's model, not only during racing, but during regular calls. Yes, riding saddles make more sense... but if part of the accomplishment of raising is showing off to your buddies, then fashion armor makes a lot of sense, yes? Of course, while some equipment makes sense to be purchased, the really nice looking pieces, such as the fantastic armor that any Destrier would kill for, I would think would need to be worked towards by accumulating good racing results. I think that would be the ultimate in chocobo satisfaction. Having bred an amazing chocobo, having raised, having raced it well, and having worked hard at racing over a long period of time to accumulate some amazing equipment, and being able to show all of that off to your friends. Perhaps racing for "choco points" could be similar to guild points in this regard. All for the sake of fashion! Yippeee!

And don't you love how we keep demanding more out of your poor model artists. :D
How about if your NPC was able to race the choco for you, he
# Aug 23 2006 at 6:53 AM Rating: Decent
That's a good idea... the only problem is the lack of names and appearances for the NPC's.

I'd rather they just make 8 character models (or however many chocos per race it is) and assign 1 model to each chocobo. Kinda like jockeys in real life, red/blue/green jerseys etc.
Color...??

So anyone have any idea how can I get a black chocobo? the armor one ^^??

How about if your NPC was able to race the choco for you, he does say he has a choco liecence, so lets put him to the test.

that way the race would feel more "you" and not some random dude playing. or even if it was your character model and you cant control it. like a massive CS. ild love to see how my NPC would race against a few ls mates.

topic of many disscussions im sure^^

This sounds like a great idea, and could be one way to get players to spend more time with both their chocobos and their NPCs. I know I rarely pull my NPC out, but I'd certainly cheer her on in a race!

Manual Control
# Aug 22 2006 at 10:42 PM Rating: Default
Seems sexy :P tho they should make private races so they allow manual control of the chocobo. Its understandable in races where you're competing for a prize or something beneficial, but if its a reserved then 3rd party tools wouldnt be a prob. Since they obviously wouldnt be competing for benefit but for fun. In a private race if someone cheats, whats the worse that happens...his friends notice and hes branded an evil bastage and he loses a few companions, SE need not be concerned.

As sad as it is that we won't be able to control the chocobo directly in the races it does make perfect sense.

I'm really keen on the whole thing, I just wish they'd add a White Chocobo. I mean BLM could get black, RDM could get red, BLU could get blu, and SMN could get green, that just leaves us WHMs without a color-coordinated chocobo v_v. Just my 2c :D.

True enough, But i'm talking color co-ordination with AF gear. I wanna be able to ride up to save the day in my white AF/white armor (holy breastplate) on my white chocobo and they'll be all like 'whoah'. It's the whole holy knight here to save the day thing.. hmm come to think of it, Paladin could also benefit from a White Chocobo... GIMME! \^-^/

what colors can you get, precisely? If not white, why not? I think that'd be a nice color for a chocobo.

Since when has this ever been an issue. You have had timed spawn NMs since the day the game came out, and up to 60+ people at a time all competeing real-time for the spawn.

Without real-time player interaction this event is doomed to fail plain and simple. Lag has never stopped you before (note Besieged), and should not stop you now. It could be as simple as putting a slight delay after an ability/item is used, before it takes affect (maybe because you are shouting the commands to the jockey? eh?).

From reading the description you are taking the easy way out. WAY too many things are just random luck in this game, and I don't want this to be one of them. Raceing is about skill, drive, initiative and determination; and with the description you have provided, you have removed all of them from raceing. Without this you might as well just call it chocobetting, because that is all it will become, which is about as usefull as all the /random spamming in lower jeuno.

I know you are trying to make things fair for everyone, but just don't destroy this before it even gets started.
