The Doll Festival (Feb. 28)

Master, have you ever heard of the Doll Festival, kupo? The Doll Festival is a Far Eastern celebration where people pray for the health and happiness of girls. During this time, girls are given rice treats to eat, and have a special place to decorate with dolls, kupo. A festival that provides such a fun opportunity for laughing and playing sounds like a great idea, don't you think, kupo? You know, since a lot of the lady adventurers out there grew up in the aftermath of the Crystal War, I bet they didn't get a chance to enjoy this festival, kupo... And that's why the Mog House Management Union has come up with a plan! We're going to return those lady adventurers to their childhoods, and give them the experience they never had, kupo! Hm? You don't think you're up for it? And what about the guy adventurers? Don't you worry, kupo. Try talking to the moogles in charge of the festival and see what happens! This time you're in for some real moogle magic, kupo! [Participating in the Event] -Form a party of 10 and talk to the moogles around town. You will receive a present in celebration of the Doll Festival! -The moogles will only consider players in the same area when counting the number of party members. -Items can only be received from the moogles once every Vana'diel day. -Characters that have just been created can only receive items from the moogles after one Vana'diel day has passed. [Event Areas] Southern San d'Oria Northern San d'Oria Bastok Mines Bastok Markets Windurst Waters Windurst Woods *This event is scheduled to take place between February 28 at 19:00 and March 13 at 19:00.

In many ancient (and even contemporary) cultures, festivals and celebrations were done in times of peace. Indeed, many of them were celebrating because of peace and prosperity.

Thinking along those lines, celebrations and festivals that involved gifts rarely included anything related to war (kind of goes against the celebration of peace idea). Gifts were usually toys, food, decorations, clothing, or something temporary like flowers. And the overall theme is usually one of "enjoy it while it lasts".

These celebrations and festivals were meant to draw a community together in a time of peace. Why? Because a tightly knit community where everyone knows their neighbor, and treats them with respect and kindness, becomes a much stronger community. And the bond that is formed between people is what helps them through times of war, death, famine, plague, etc.

So it's not about some item that helps you kill the enemy. It's about turning to the person next to you, whom you didn't know their name, and introducing yourself. Who knows? Maybe the friend(s) you made are the ones that will help you, the next time you're running away from that monster that's about to kill you. Or maybe they'll be the one(s) to help you retrieve that artifact you've been wanting.

For those that want to participate...enjoy it while it lasts. Peace doesn't come often.

For those that don't like the festival...there's plenty of other things you could be doing.
Just remember to have fun with it

I think the most interesting aspect of this holiday is not what you get from it, but what you learn from it.

I don't know much about Japanese culture, but learning what the moogle had to tell me about the festival was very interesting. ^^

Costumes last about 5 minutes, you can't really do anything in them (I tried to browse AH to no avail) and the emotes your normal character are set up for do not work with the costumes (/wave, /bow, etc.)

These holiday events are set up for people to have fun and take a break from the daily EXP grind, so even if you don't get some piece of equipment (that shouldn't be worn in battle anyhow!) the point is to have fun and help your fellow players.

No, I don't. Please don't tell me what I hear. If you are using the word 'you' in the passive tense, then making general statements such as yours is what is actually stupid.

Quote:

I agree with this, but please make sure to indicate that it is directed at everyone and not a specific race.

Quote:

Another blanket racist statement. How pathetic.

Quote:

God, I can't believe this crap is being spewed on a public message board. Sorry, but I believe the major reason that Japanese don't like to party with Americans (and vice versa) is because of the language barrier. It is much more comfortable to party in a group that one can communicate with. Perhaps there are some that share your racist ideology, but I believe the majority of people do not.

Quote:
as for me i want more of the japanese events there culture is amazing

Great...I think their culture is amazing, too. I also think the American culture is amazing, so I'd rather see a healthy balance of events from all cultures.

Ok, This is just plain stupid to even put up! Im an NA player. I may not prefer this event... I dont like many events. Some people bash them because they would like an item that is useful. You need to look at how culturally signifigant this is. Its allowing us to participate in a holiday that we dont normally celebrate in the United States. Yea, I believe JP's are normally better players than NA's, but they also have more game experience than us. As for why they dont want to party with us... I believe it goes both ways. Alot of NA's a run into are severly gimped and dont play their jobs well. They also cant understand if we are asking a question. Hey~If you want to pt with a JP soo bad, go learn the language... If your too lazy to do that, dont complain about them not inviting you. Just cause you feel comfortable with them in your pt doesnt meen it will go the same visa versa. As for the comment about how you dont hear JP's bashing the other events geared towards NA's... well, Unless you understand the language, you wouldnt hear it would you ^^ And if you try to say im a "Racist"... You can go shove it.

This is BS. There are good players on both sides, as well as bad. Why don't you try and stop making stereotypical comments such as this.

Again, that goes both ways. There are bad NA players as well as bad JP players.

Not sure where this comment came from. No one is complaining about not getting invites. lol.

Huh? That sentence makes no sense. I honestly cannot figure out what you are trying to say here.

I love how everyone is complaining because they aren't getting some awesome armor/weapon/item for nothing.

Festivals are fun, or supposed to be. I don't usually participate in them because I am off leverling or whatnot. If you don't like it, don't participate. Nothing says you NEED to participate in a festival. It would probably be better without you complaining.

March Calendar Event
White Day
--------------------------------------------------

St. Valentine's Day in Japan is a day when women give the special men in their lives boxes of chocolate. To balance out the one-sidedness of this practice, White Day was invented for men to reciprocate such gifts. While Valentine's Day is an imported convention, White Day (on March 14) is a purely Japanese creation.

Just as with the giving of chocolates on Valentine's, the driving force behind the popularization of White Day was a confectionery maker. A company making marshmallows launched a campaign in 1965 urging men to repay valentine gifts with soft, fluffy marshmallows. The name White Day comes from the color of the candy, and at first it was called Marshmallow Day.

When chocolatiers saw the opportunity to expand their business, they began marketing white chocolates, and other candy makers soon jumped on the bandwagon. Gradually, the original association with marshmallows disappeared; today, men no longer limit their purchases to confections, giving women handkerchiefs, accessories, and other gifts.

According to a survey conducted by a Tokyo department store in 1996, the White Day gift that made women happiest was flowers accompanied by a greeting card - regardless of whether the chocolates given a month earlier were for their honmei (true sweethearts) or to fulfill their giri (obligation) to classmates or colleagues.

edit: typos -.-#

edit: Hahaa! ^^;; Looks like I got the events mixed up. Was talking to a coworker who mentioned White Day and it sounded quite similar. Darn, was hoping for another present. =\

Close but not quite :)

As Zashia said, this is actually Hina Matsuri.

Taken from .
It's a good read for those interested.

The 3rd of March - (by the Solar Calendar) is called "Hina-no-Sekku","Hina-Matsuri" (Doll's
Festival) or "Momo-no-Sekku" (Peach blossom's Festival) which used to be one of the important
seasonal events of ancient China and has now developed into a function symbolic of Japanese arts
and customs and has been in existence in Japan since the Edo Period (17 - 19 centuries).

Momo-no-Sekku used to be held on the 3rd of March according to the Lunar Calendar, though today it is actually not until early April that the peach blossoms begin to bloom, and that is how the name of this festival came about.

On this day families with young daughters celebrate this event at home to ensure their daughter's future happiness. That is, they decorate hina-Ningyo (special, beautiful dolls which are replicas of an ancient emperor and empress and their subordinates).

I'm personally enjoying the festival for what it is. A chance to get to know new people in the game that I haven't had a chance to meet yet. The rewards are just reminders of the new people I got to meet.

Every now and then SE gives us great opportunities to meet others we normally wouldn't have a chance to meet. It's nice to do events where you don't have to spend money or a lot of time doing. You can just sort of answer a shout of an event party needing a few more and get to make new friends while you do it.

Of course that's why I enjoyed summerfest so much as well. I didn't care about the rewards in that event either. I enjoyed making new friends while trying to find our way through zones we had never been to before.

After being told by the moogle many times to order the items in my inventory, I figured out that I had to have at least enough spaces to receive 1 of each cake, if it's the first time you're doing it. If it's not your first time doing it then don't worry, cause they'll automatically stack with the cakes you already have.

What I want to know is can you receive the cakes from one moogle, move your whole party to the other zone in the city with a moogle, and get another set of cakes in the same Vana'diel day?

Anyhow, here's the full messages the moogle told me, after two party setups.

5 guys and 5 girls, randomly inserted into an alliance of two parties:

Moogle: It looks like you have all the members you need. Time for the festival to begin, kupo!
Moogle: After sqeezing my moogle sources some more, they told me that people used to eat these during the festival.
Moogle: Just in case you didn't know, the three girls in your party represent ladies of the court who wait on the empress. Moogles know everything about festivals, kupo!
Your obtain a Tarutaru rice cake and a Mithran rice cake!
I'm assuming that means we only had two girls in the alliance, a Mithra and a Tarutaru.

"Perfect setup" Four girls, six guys, mixed randomly together in two parties:

Moogle: It looks like you have all the members you need, kupo!
Moogle: In fact, the moogle grapevine tells me that this is the perfect Doll Festival combination, kupo!
Moogle: As a reward for your blind lu-- I mean "resourcefulness," I'm going to give you lots of these treats, kupo!
You obtain 3 Hume rice cakes, 3 Elvaan rice cakes, 3 Tarutaru rice cakes, and 3 Mithran rice cakes!
So in that one I'm assuming we had exactly one of each race. I can't be sure because lots of people had anon on and we got the party together in a hurry.

So anyway, if you have enough patience, why not try dressing up the emperor and empress in Lord and Lady Yukatas, and the musicians and ladies of the court in Omina and Onoko yukatas? =p

I think this event is great. Think of other MMORPG's and tell me how many have special events? It is something unique about FFXI and if people don't like it, they can play something else or not participate in the event.
I will say I would get bored if they didn't mix it up every once in a while. I think some american players have gotten too spoiled in that if they get nothing good out of it, they wont participate. People that think this way are missing the entire point of the game.
I like the events and it adds a little something that other MMO's ignore for the most part.

You know, I agree with most of your statement. I think the festivals and events are fun and people shouldn't complain because they are not forced to participate. But I do not think you should say that "american players" are spoiled. I am american and play with many others and we all enjoy these events regardless of prizes or rewards. If someone is complaining, it has nothing to do with their country of origin. I think it would have more to do with that person individually and why they are playing the game. Anyway, Have a nice day

Its just a sweeping generalisation i suppose. Basically, most Western World players would not understand the meaning of the festival, compared to a Japanese player.

It's not that bad, considering that the festival isn't exactly a major world-recognized holiday like Christmas or Easter. I'd be willing to wager a lot of NAs hadn't ever heard of this, if nothing else...not like they would've noticed if Square-Enix had given it a miss altogether. Now, if they hadn't done anything for Christmas people would be whining to no end, I'm sure.

'Sides, I'm still convinced they're not done. The description certainly plays up the doll aspect, and that ain't happening yet. I'm savin' my rice cakes just in case, myself.

...These events are meant to throw some variety into the game. People complain on and on about how they hate this event, but what do you want? If they handed out free armor, then people would use it, and if you didn't get it then guess what? You're gimped!

It's the new event. If you don't like it, don't participate in it. I think it's fun to transform into a little Elvaan or Mithra girl and run around town. Some people could use it for RP. Other people could sell this stuff on the AH. There are many new uses for these items, if you just look. And if you don't think it's got any use, then just look at it as a fun little game that some people can play.

So far, I've seen that for every female of a race in your alliance, you get a rice cake for that race. So if you have 3 Hume females, a Mithra, and a Taru female, you would get a H-Cake, M-Cake, and a T-Cake (only one of each). However, if you get 6 males and 4 females in an alliance together (I believe these are the numbers), you get a stack of each type of cake.

We just did this quest and got 3 tarutaru cakes, 3 mithra cakes, 3 hume cakes, and 3 elvaan cakes. our party line up was this:

1 man and 1 woman in one party
3 women in a second party
5 men in a third party

We're going to try different races and see if we get anything different. I hope there's more to this than just the cakes. But the tents and tables in the common areas hints at more later on. We'll see, kupo!!

I did this in Windurst Woods with a 5 man 1 woman party allied with a 1 man and 3 woman setup so this setup also works for getting max rice cakes. Also on my whm using the cake gave me -3 int and +20 mind. The cake only works in city zones so far.

My next test will be if the stat boost is job specific, or if it is always -3 int and +20 mind. Also I haven't got any galka rice cakes yet, so I'm starting to think it doesn't exsist (since Galka are genderless) Anyway if anyone on Valefor wants to do this tommorow and I'm in your city look me up :)

*edit* Hmm I forgot to take into account the gear I am wearing. The stats the costume give are -3 int and -3 mnd.
