Actually compared to other games this isnt to bad. Some have it every week and from 8-12 hours. I can understand why ppl might have been complaining earlier, but why now? There isnt going to be much time left and a 'refund' isnt going to be worth crap. Also at least we know there is going to be some kind of maintenance ahead of time, even if we dont know how long its going to take.

I've never played a MMORPG with so much Maintenence. Square Enix needs to get on the ball and stop shutting the servers down for seemingly one day a month. Also, I think one month they should do maintenence on JP time, the next do it on NA time, and say the next month do it on Europe time. That way we can have three full months to plan our rants for the inevitable down time due to maintenence.

Ever heard of Ragnarok Online?

No, really, one time a month with a large update is a lot better than everyday update in my opinion. What time it is done, is irrelevant to me as long as the game works. As stated before i believe it's for the good of the servers lag during the maintenance, that they are timed on lower traffic in the Japan. That cuts down also the time the maintenance takes, which would mean it would take longer time to perform the maintenance if it was done in favor to NA time. Just be glad these aren't done in weekends ^^.

Also i'd like to point out that JP and EU timezones aren't that different, so your suggestion would actually only favor NA since it would be timed 1/3 while EU and JP would be timed 2/3 both. As for me, I live in Europe myself but EU players aren't that great in numbers yet, and it will take a while for the new players to reach my current level after the EU release, which leads to my personal timing issue. I get no benefit whatsoever that the maintenances are held usually 8pm my time (10.00PDT) since i don't/can't play that much during daytime, and getting a party requires for me to play with NA players time preference, so in a way I'm in the same boat too.

Not long to go anymore, it's just these 2 days because of the CoP and EU release.

EDIT : Yeah the time difference is there, it's just not as visible as with NA/JP. While having european time maintenance it would be evening in JP, eating their primetime. Just like having JP maintenance it would eat NA primetime. By primetime i mean 18.00+ (6pm). You can compare the activity on servers between 10.00 PDT - 17.00 PDT and 17.00 PDT - 00.00 PDT. I bet the latter has more NA players actually playing, looking for party etc. Just don't see the point to really whine about it when it's done during the period there is the smallest amount of players online. This may not have anything to do with connections/traffic at all. I think S-E has calculated the timezone in FFXI when there are as few as possible players online and timed it like that. Thinking it's something to just favor Japanese players... not too convinced.

http://www.worldtimezone.com/

Europe is 5-9 hours ahead of North America, and is 8 - 10 hours behind japan.... ish.

I think that doing updates like I suggested is fair. You're right that Europe isnt that well represented in the world of Vanadiel yet, but I'm sure it will be one day. I just think doing a different zone each month would be more fair.

And perhaps you are right about the one update a month. It just seems like a whole day's down time to us North American players who are down all afternoon and most of the evening.

I dont know how I'm goin to get to lvl 30 by this weekend. I have to go to school and I now that alot of people here have a similiar problem. I'm in the EDT zone so updates usually go untill 8-8:30 depending if they finish on time. I understand that updates and maintenance are neccesary and make the game even greater than it already is but when there is a maintenance I get around 1hr and 30 mins to play. I think that maybe if S-E shuffled the maintenance times around alot of people wouldnt complain as much. Also, a small rebate of some sort for the missed time this month wouldnt cost S-E too much and would settle alot of people's concerns. After all, CoP is coming out in 7 days and we all know that everyone is going to get it, even if it's "voluntary" ^^. Just my 2 cents (man I miss my premium member status lol) Have a nice day. My name is Korriri on the Valefore server stop by and say hi.

P.S. Has anyone else gotten a spyware problem after coming to allakhazam.com? I know I didnt have any spyware or spambots or w/e untill I logged on awhile ago. This is a new computer and now my net surfing is bassically crippled and I'm gettin kinda pissed lol.

Am I the only one who hated having to review my fees every month? I finally got tired of finding my content ID number so I've just been hitting the Later button instead of dealing with it. With all the problems with the new viewer there is one thing it got right, it no longer forces me to check my fees!

. . . I'm clutching at straws here . . .

HAHAHA everybodies ******** is so funny, and what is MORE funny is that you act as if you were not warned, i remember a few days ago, maybe even a week ago, notice that said something along the lines of ALL SERVERS WILL BE DOWN FOR MAINTENENCE...seems pretty clear to me, seeing as how the servers are in japan, and peek hours means more network traffic, it would stand to reason that their network may be able to hold the massive download bandwidth in off peak times, so as not to shut down all of japans network and send them into the stoneage because we all rely on computers and ffxi too damn much.

anyway, we know maintenence happens, we were warned, there is nothing you can do about it, if you want to ***** for a 17 hour credit and get your dime refund, SE will probably humor you.

In less I missed something I have not read anywhere about how we pay for a month of gameplay and only get to play three weeks worth in a month. Whats next pay for my cable bill for a month and only watch tv for three weeks. Mabey there on a differnt calender then us!!
RE: Help

Unless I missed something there are, on average, 4 weeks to a month and including today there have been 3 maintenance days, in the past month if i remember correctly. Perhaps it's you who is on a different calender?

I agree, this isn't something to quit the game over. I suggest spice up your life a bit. I posted earlier saying I'll go play City of Heroes instead, but I'm not gonna quit this game for CoH. It's just fun to play because it is different, I mean, you can actually kill 5+ mobs in CoH that check as evens or toughs all by yourself at the same time. It's gratifying in that way, but will never replace FFXI.
Converting times.

Here is how to convert the maintenance times, which are in 24-hour PST, to normal time:

For EST:
If the time is past 12:59 PST (like 13, 14, 15, ect.) - Drop the first digit of the hour number and add a 1 to the remaining digit. Whatever time you get, stick a ":00 PM" on the end of it.

Ex: If maintenance is running until 17:00 PST, drop the 1 from the 17. That leaves you with 7. Add a 1 to that 7 to get 8:00 PM.

If the time is before 13:00 PST (like 9, 10, 11, ect.) - Just add 3 hours to it, keeping in mind that you are using a base-12 number system (12+1 = 1).

For Central:
If the time is past 12:59 PST (like 13, 14, 15, ect.) - Drop the first digit of the hour number. Whatever time you get, stick a ":00 PM" on the end of it.

Ex: If maintenance is running until 17:00 PST, drop the 1 from the 17. That leaves you with 7:00 PM.

If the time is before 13:00 PST (like 9, 10, 11, ect.) - Just add 2 hours to it, keeping in mind that you are using a base-12 number system (12+1 = 1).

For Mountain:
If the time is past 12:59 PST (like 13, 14, 15, ect.) - Drop the first digit of the hour number and subtract a 1 to the remaining digit. Whatever time you get, stick a ":00 PM" on the end of it.

Ex: If maintenance is running until 17:00 PST, drop the 1 from the 17. That leaves you with 7. Subtract a 1 to that 7 to get 6:00 PM.

If the time is before 13:00 PST (like 9, 10, 11, ect.) - Just add 1 hour to it, keeping in mind that you are using a base-12 number system (12+1 = 1).

For PST:
If the time is past 12:59 PST (like 13, 14, 15, ect.) - Drop the first digit of the hour number and subtract a 2 to the remaining digit. Whatever time you get, stick a ":00 PM" on the end of it.

Ex: If maintenance is running until 17:00 PST, drop the 1 from the 17. That leaves you with 7. Subtract a 2 to that 7 to get 5:00 PM.

If the time is before 13:00 PST (like 9, 10, 11, ect.) - If you can't figure this out, you don't deserve to live.

Hope this helps some of you.

# Sep 14 2004 at 4:46 PM Rating: Decent
This is plain BS I already paid these ppl this monthe for what so they have to keep doing maintenance every month, like yesterday was my only day off for a long time, i go sit down with my snacks and Drink and what do I see, A MAINTENANCE!!! that really made my day, if this continues im definetely gonna cancel my account, cause maintenace shouldnt even take that long, but for some reason they do? well at least i played some other Games yesterday like Final Fantasy Tactics one of my all time favs so really if i think about it it wsnt that bad, but i still think its kinda ridiculous how long it takes to do a maintenance!!!

Do you have any idea how sad you sound? Yeah, its annoying, yeah this is taking way too long but it isn't the 5th horseman of the apocalypse and some day, fear not, you will play again. Keep clicking that retry button and have faith. In the mean time take a walk, get some fresh air or maybe settle down with a good book.

all i ever here about is ******** when it comes to these maintanances, who cares if we have to wait a day or 2 to play. this is not real life, plus they are making the game better for us to play, so how can you ***** about that people are human they make mistakes, bithching is not going to fix anything so just stop whining and deal with it id rather have a few days off to make the game better and fix the bugs than have se just leave it and let us deal with it
sorry for the rant

not everyone who has a problem with this is "*************** Im just saying that there are other ways around this and maybe more tests could have been done on the test server so that this wouldnt have taken so long. Granted that if I had lots of free time to play this game and didnt have much longer to play (I have about 1 month left before I need to crack down on my midterms) then I would just be happy to wait till tomorrow or the next day. I'm glad that there at least doing something about this and not waiting forever to fix these things like other companies. I just think ppl are ******** because they want answers. I to would rather see them fix this now and not have a whole bunch of problems a week form now. Cheer up everyone!

Are you people serious? Seek help, learn patience.

First of all, this in NOT DONE EVERYDAY. No, we don't get everyday 7h maintenance now do we. After the worlds maintenance a month back that took 8 hours, there wasn't a single maintenance for a long time. Yea we all have lives outside FFXI, school, work, social commitments, and when we have the time to play, we don't like to see the servers down.

BUT, try to see that U.S. got the FFXI right away with RotZ. You weren't there to see the upgrades for that back in the days for JP people. We have a major expansion coming up, so it is very natural that the improvements and changes that are done ingame are patched to us, paying customers, as soon as possible. EU gets the game Friday. We have to wait til next week. It's the same servers and I would assume EU release needs things to work PERFECT since many new players are coming to play.

You apparently would have loved to see a few NPC's here and there freezing your comp/PS2 back at U.S. release. This is not only done for our convenience, but also to foresee that a launch in a whole another continent will be a success. The new items + other changes on the other hand, we get a small benefit on since they implemented this stuff on this patch in advance. To me it seems they are doing exactly what i would expect as a pying customer; keep things working and the servers in a shape i can play them. Small consideration appreciated, these long maintenances aren't happening every day.

Quit your unreasonable ********* I realise some are disappointed at the fact that they can't get to play before tomorrow. Imagine 50 000 new players noticing the first day they play that the game is working improperly, or that 8hour maintenance is being held the moment they get online first time. Sheesh....

EDIT : Didn't mean all of the posters. Just those saying stupid and ridiculous things such as "What't the game xxxxx maintenance times? I might switch games..." and "OMFG I'M CANCELING MY ACCOUNT OVER THIS!!!111"

Great injustice indeed, it's online game, live with the fact that the servers need to be maintained to keep the game from crashing, maintenance is part of EVERY ONLINE GAME. One that does not have maintenance times, i do not even wish to know of.

THANK YOU!!!!!!
ppl here need to learn to live outside the game...and just be gald that this doesnt happen EVERYDAY like alot of the other MMORPGs out there.

And another thing about new launches...RoZ came with the U.S. version which was a big help with the maintence but this happened in Japan before it hit them. And how about when the game was first launched in Japan? Think the servers were up and running smoothly from day one? I would bet that you were lucky to get 5 hours of gameplay a week the first time FFXI went live.

Lets see you create a game and try and implement a major patch to it with out everyone that plays it getting pissed at you. SE is doing the best they can to try and get this over and done with and allow all the ppl who have no life able to get back on.

The thing is with these maintences they are trying to fix all the known exploits ppl are using before the release CoP and get a more ppl in on the game. i.e. Rusty > Padded caps. And it was not 2 days of maintence...yesterdays and todays are DIFFERENT updates. I was on last night from about 9pm until almost 3am with only no problems at all so it is not 2 straight days of maintence.
Only day off...and look what happens.

Well its easy for people to say lets not get upset about stuff. well they have had problems on my server(Quezacoalt) for the past 3 days. When you work full time and go to college full time you dont have that much time to play it kinda seems horrible everytime you have a free day and its shut down. You can say im whining or whatever but I dont have as much time as I used to in the summer to play this game so this does really hurt some peoples play time.

Just remember to take whatever time is posted by SE and add two hours to it to get to your time zone.

Therefore, 10:00-17:00 becomes 12:00-19:00

Switching from 24 hour clock to normal people clock...I like to just count on my fingers, remembering that 13:00 is 1:00 pm. So 19:00 is...7:00 pm central. ^_^;

I don't know about everyone else, but I feel these upgrades are poorly implemented. I know the upgrade was going on yesterday, so i waited to 7p, central to connect. Took 3.5+ hours to finally get the upgrade after numerous attempted to download.. I must have had the 1616 files check a dozen times. Just to get disconnected at the download step. So yesterday was a complete lost and now I just logged on to find another long outage. So far every upgrade has been a nightmare to download.... Am I alone or are others getting the same bad service? Getting very pissed.
