Talking World of Warplanes with Alexander Zezulin

World of Tanks has only been around for less than a year in North America, but in that time span alone this tank-based MMO has pulled in some serious positivity from players and journalists around the world. Of course, Belarusian developer Wargaming.net isn't content to just sit back and release more tanks over the coming years; instead, they've decided to expand their World of [insert armored Vehicle] franchise by spreading their wings and taking to the air.

Literally.

This year, Wargaming.net is looking to the skies for their next MMO with the announcement of World of Warplanes. But how does one do a plane-based MMO? We sat down with World of Warplanes' Project Director Alexander Zezulin to talk about this new MMO and how Wargaming.net planes to take the aviation-based MMO world by storm. Let's get to it!

World of Warplanes's Teases German Aircraft

19 Warplanes. One trailer. A whole lotta German Plane teasing going on in this teaser trailer for Wargaming.net's World of Warplanes. With several famous Luftwaffe machines to choose from, World of Warplanes is shaping up to be a WWII plane aficianado's dream. Also, I'll stop making jokes about teasing German planes.

World of Warplanes: ZAM's First Impressions

Those Belorussians know what they like: War games. After seeing the massive spectacle that was Wargaming.net's booth at E3 - complete with tanks, tank girls, and WWII garbed drivers - it came as no surprise that the next two games coming to their servers would be World of Warplanes and World of Battleships. More explosions? I don't mind if I do.

At this year's GDC Online, Wargaming.net had a behind-closed-doors demo of World of Warplanes for members of the press to check out and enjoy. Gone were the flashing lights and booming stage presence of World of Tanks at E3; this was a demonstration that was focusing entirely on the game. To be honest, this was a nice change of pace from what we'd experienced the last few months from the Wargaming crew, and it definitely got our attention.

So what about the game?

Wargaming.net announced today that World of Battleships will join World of Tanks and World of Warplanes to complete the company's war-filled gaming trilogy. As you may expect, World of Battleships will be a free-to-play naval action MMO based on epic sea battles of the 20th century. Here's what we know so far about the upcoming game:

"Keeping with the best traditions of the series, World of Battleships will offer a straightforward interface, easy-to-use controls, and a common economic system that will allow players to distribute resources between the three games for the ultimate progress in each of them.

The large assortment of available warships will give various tactical opportunities, as all the machines have a unique combination of firepower, speed, armor, and endurance. Various naval maps with changing weather conditions will enrich the gameplay, and the realistic graphics will transport players into the epic battles that changed the course of human history."

World of Tanks, Warplanes to Share Economic System

Wargaming.net, the company behind World of Tanks, announced at E3 that it is developing World of Warplanes, a free-to-play game that is based on military air dominance ranging from the 1930s through the 1950s. Today the company revealed that World of Warplanes' economic system will be the same as World of Tanks, with gold, credits and experience as the main currency to earn and spend for continued advancements.

"World of Warplanes will feature a global interaction with World of Tanks, which will begin with sharing gold and free experience between the two games for players, who have registered accounts in both of them on a single email. This feature will allow Wargaming.net community to plan their expenses and leave exactly the amount of gold and free experience they want on either of the games."

The announcement also provides some more details on World of Warplanes. According to the post, "Virtual pilots will choose from three main warplane classes — single-engine light fighters capable of engaging enemies in close dogfights, twin-engine fighters with their deadly straight attacks, and strafing aircrafts, the fearsome threat for ground targets."
