having trouble picking professions for an altFollow

#1 Sep 03 2010 at 4:57 AM Rating: Decent
Hey everyone. I have an 80 prot warrior as an alt, and I'm having a hard time choosing professions. He's currently a miner and skinner, but since the LFD system came out, I neglected to level it up as I leveled up. I want some professions that are decently beneficial, but I'm not looking to min/max. I'd like to make some nice gold as well from the AH, since I'm not sitting on a lot. I also don't have a lot of time to invest into camping the AH since school is coming up, so I'd like to just drop it in the AH without having to log on during lecture to undercut the person who undercut me. I've narrowed it down to these choices:

Mining/JC: Make gems for myself and sell the rest on the AH and make lots of gold. But it seems like everyone is a JC these days, so I'm not sure if there's space for me in the market. Plus, I'm not sitting on a lot of gold between my main and alt to power level it (I hear it's pretty pricey). And my server is notorious for undercutting (even my guildies undercut one another -_-)

Herbalism/Alchemy: Make potions, elixirs, and flasks for my toons. Get an extra hour too on flasks, woo! Herbs sell pretty decently on the AH I hear, as do the flasks. But again, a lot of people out there are alchemists. Is there really space for me in the market this late in the game? And will I need to camp the AH, or is this one of the safer professions where I won't really need to worry about it? I ask because I haven't heard of AH camping for an alchemist.

Herbalism/Inscription: I'm torn on this one. Good things are: it's fast, cheap, and easy to level. The vellums help my enchanting on my main. People always need glyphs and they sell well. Has the potential to make lots of gold. Bad things are: I've read I need to spend a lot of time running back and forth between the AH and mailbox. Also, once people have their glyphs, both major and minor, for both main spec and off spec, I just lost a buyer. The darkmoon cards are also way too iffy to try and make gold off of that alone.

Skinning/Herbalism or Mining: I could just keep him as a gatherer and sell the raw materials on the AH. I could just give whatever herbs needed to an alchemist to have my stuff made. It just seems like the skinning profession would be a waste. The passive buffs are nice though.

While writing this long post (this is the longest post I've ever written on these forums), I think I have may decided, or at least have an idea. Guess I just needed to see it in front of me in print. I'll sleep on it and think about it some more though. Still, any insight you profession guru's can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A friend of mine is a JC/Prot Warrior who tanks many heroics. He doesn't need anything, but he runs them anyways, uses his emblems, buys gems, cuts them and sells.

As a tank who pulls fast he basically runs 4 heroics an hour. After his first initial one that earns 2 frost badges, lets say the average heroic gives 4 emblems + 2 for completion, so he hits about 24 emblems an hour. So a little over 2 hours he can earn about 50 emblems and buy 5 epic gems (orange, purple, green), cut them and sell.

Problem with JC right now on my server and probably many others is gems and demand for gems has dropped heavily. A new raid would reinvigorate the gem market like it always does. But right now we're in a slump and gems which used to be 150g are now 80-90g, there are more sellers listing and relisting and less buyers buying.

So it probably averaged him 300g per hour before from gems alone, plus whatever bonus loot he earned from the dungeons, say an average of a frozen orb every 5 runs, about 13g per run from the bonus, random vendor trash, cloth, greens and blues to vendor or disenchant materials to bank/sell. Probably came out to 500g per hour which is about average for questing or farming mats.

At this point in the game, I'm not seeing many buyers. I'm even starting to do a little gathering and I'm an AH junkie. And gathering at the beginning of the expansion and selling early will net you insane amounts of gold. I remember leveling my mage the week WoTLK hit with enchanting and herbalism. I disenchanted every quest reward and sold stacks of dust for 200g/stack and stacks of herbs were incredible as well. Saronite was even better but I wasn't working on my miner at the time.

In fact the first character I level in Cata may be a dual gatherer because I know the price of those goods will be sky high for about 2-3 weeks, and especially the first week as completionists rush to cap their crafting professions and try and earn [Realm First!] profession achievements.

Yeah, I would make him a JC, only problem is I don't have the gold to power level it. Unless you're suggesting I just farm heroics for badges, buy uncut gems, and sell those to get gold to power level it. Hm...

Also, another thing came to mind about inscription. Does anyone buy enchanted vellums? I tried looking in my AH last night, and I may have been looking in the wrong section, but I didn't see any enchanted vellums up for sale. Plus, I see lots of people looking for enchanter in both guild chat and trade chat.

Man, it seems like inscription is losing out in this race...

On my server, I can probably sell one weapon enchant and two armor enchants per day at close to a market price significantly higher than the AH value of the mats. Popular recipes are a buyer's market at this point, as sellers are competing for price in order to move mats without a loss (selling an enchant for mat cost is a good alternate way to get market value for dust/essence when you're already saturating the direct market). This might be different on a high volume server, and circumstances like seasonal events and Cataclysm launch change the situation radically.

Mind you, the scribes still get hosed because the vellums themselves go for peanuts to the chanters.
