I thought I would post this here in an effort to help some people out with problems like, ad stuff getting on your computer, or poppups popping up in and out of FFXI. If this is someway against the TOS or shouldn't be here I apologize. Also please do not turn this into a your opinion, my opinion thread. I want to simply put there out there for people who would like to try it, not for people to debate over it. First try then complain to me about it later outside this thread if you feel the need.
ok
First of all, everyone should go to mozilla.org and download a web browser called FireFox. It is more secure and safer than Internet explorer. Still keep internet explorer around since there are some things that won't work with FireFox (FF for short) but still use FF whenever possible. It has a built in poppup blocker so no need to download any programs for that, this is built in so it is more effective, and I have had 0 poppups after using FF, and I have been using it for over 2 years maybe 3 now.

Next go to http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/ and download a program called Ad-aware. Run this once a day for 3-4 days prior to using FF. Then after that run it about twice a week. If you feel the need you can still run it every day but you might not need to really after using FF for a week or so. Also if you use any external email programs like Outlook express or soemthing, there is a more secure Email program on mozilla.org. It is called Thunderbird. But if you use online based email services, like Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. Don't worry those are safe to use as well.

I hope this has helped many people with their problems with poppups and crap getting on their computer. I know there have been numerous LS members that have talked about poppups and crap on their computer and I tell them to do this and they have no problems after that. meow =^.^=

It's a good program. I've been using Ad-aware for months and it still finds something new most every time I spend time online.

*ESPECIALLY if I've been on these forums!!* Spyware/adware stuff is definately infesting this sight.

There's also Spybot. I don't know their website addy but you can most likely download it from cnet's download.com site.

It's a nice companion for Adaware. I run both periodically.

Another bonus with Firefox is there are two extensions (that I've seen anyway) that someone on these boards have posted, which work for Firefox. One is for skillchains and the other is a vana'diel clock that appears in the status bar area.

clicky clicky

actually that vanadiel clock is on numerous LS sites, my LS included, So whenever i want to check it i just go to my LS site its on the menu. We are in no way claiming it as our own just using it and my site admin is actually working on a modified version right now, but since he is very busy in RL it wont be done for awhile, so in the mean time we have the regular version that most sites use.
also a handy feature in FF that i didnt mention. Tab browsing! it's very handy for people who visit forums, and/or multiple sites at once. You just click the mouse wheel on a link and it makes a tab at the top of the screen, which you can switch back and forth between sites with. you can have lots of them at once too, ive had about 20 or so up at once.

I agree on the tabbed browsing! ^^

Oh yeah, I seen some game clocks on websites, which actually do look more spiffier than the FF extension, but my sole reason is that I have the zone connection map (the one by belwyn?) up and in another tab have the item lookup (of this site! ^^), sometimes the mob lookup as well. If I'm on either tab, I can still see the clock in the status area of the browser. Oh btw, I use my laptop for information and research and my PC for the gaming.

I don't use the skillchain extension too much, I still like that standalone program that runs in a cmd window.

anyway, I realize I'm going off topic and shall stop now! ^^

I don't use Firefox, I run a taskbar from Google and the popup blocker on that works just fine. I also have and run Spybot and a protection program called Winpatrol that took care of a nasty bug I had that "hijacked" my homepage and kept resetting it.
I had Spybot before I had Ad-aware, and while I found it to be a good program, unlike Ad-aware it very rarely gets updated and consequently if I run Ad-aware first then Spybot never finds anything.

Please be sure to go to a search engine and find out how to best setup Ad-aware to do a custom scan. I run the quick and easy version of it and it almost always finds all the files, but if I ever notice something funky that it didn't catch I run the custom setup I have all laid out for deep scanning.

I got all my programs completely free from Download.com

umm ok.. i already listed things for people to download for free. This thread is for people to try this, not for people to debate what they think is better... i stated this in the first post lol. So do not say this and this is better if you haven't tried FF.
