I must thank everyone posting here. It is amazing how some people can debate a subject, and it is nothing more then a debate, and has an actual purpose. Those flame wars and slam fests have no enjoyment.

Ketosuki,

#1 I ratther enjoy the numbered paragraphs as it makes it very organized, and resposes to each # are easily defined. I cant possibly organize my thoughts well enough to # them, so ill stop now.

Although you dont like this topic being on this thread, the topic came about by the underlying reason behind some peoples dislike for "checking", and so i think it is definatly a warrented topic.

Ceraphine

You say, pretty much what i was saying, but you have a different view point on it. Japan CHOOSE to take up western "technology" so as not to be at a disadvantage. Although it may have been the right thing to do, they made the choice. If they had not, worse things may have happened, but i want to reiterate that the choice was made and not forced. Also as far as WW2 and pearl harbor goes, they also made the CHOICE to elevate the dispute to war. As you say america imposed an oil embargo on them, which was intended to be a non lethal way of halting hostilities on Japan's part. Japan decided it was going to end in war no matter what, and so took the first blow. I cant say that it was a right decision, or a wrong one, but i can say that it was their CHOICE. Once the war began, we pleaded for their surrender (which we would not have wanted had they not decided to take the aggressive route), to no avail. And so we were forced to do what we did to end the war.

Japan may have been very well capable of recovering on their own, but my point in stating that we helped, is to show that the US was not out to destroy Japan and their lifestyle, but meerly out to cease hostilities on their part (similar to Germany or Iraq).

I say this for the mear fact that most of what the US did to Japan was a reaction to something Japan did to us or other countries. This is the reason it is difficult for me to grasp your view of "Japanese have every right to be racist". On the other side of that coin (yes there are 2 sides to every story), EVERYONE has the right to be racist, hate, love, feel, ect. And although i am 100% against racism from anyone for any reason, i cant deny someone their right to have that emotion. I also dont have to agree with them, and have to right to say so.

I dont totally agree with our government, nor any other government. I dont think Iraq needed us to interfere, but we did. But when i look at Iraq, it brings me back to hitler. Had we done nothing, what would have been the final outcome? We didnt do it alone, but we did help. I read the history of hitler, and it makes me sick. I just cant imagine not helping those poor people. Maybe Iraq was a mistake, or maybe getting into other peoples business in the case of Japan was a mistake. But look at the relationship the US has with Japan now. We have trade agreements, economic support systems, and in general a wonderful relationship. While there may be some racist Japanese, for the most part Americans get along with them just fine. There are still racist americans towards Japanese as well, but again 2 wrongs dont make a right.

Moral of my story is, people who hold in hate towards others whom they have never met, or had any issues with, are looking for someone to hate. They dont hate because of WW2 (although that may be their excuse), they dont hate because western technology was passing them by. They dont hate because some american went to africa and took their great great geat great great grandfather and made him a slave. They hate because the world has instilled it in them. They hate because someone told them to hate. They hate because they need an excuse to be mad, and choose to be mad at a culture, instead of dealing with whats really bothering them. Look at the KKK. For crying out loud, how ignorant can you be. I say this about those americans, because it is no different then the Japanese saying they hate us for what we did to them. It is no different then the African Americans being mad at all white people. It is no difference then the french hating americans. It all stems from what has been taught, and not what has been felt.

Ok ill stop now, I need to go eat some sushi, all this talk about Japan makes me crave raw fish.

I'm not sure if we are still talking about the reactions of people checking other people or if we are talking about ancient Japan. But seeing as how i don't know diddly crap about current or ancient Japan i'll just say something about checking people.

Now keep in mind that i've only been playing for about 6 weeks now and my highest lvl is a 26 mnk. But IMHO getting offended, pissed off, upset, hurt or any other negative feeling from being checked is kinda...let's see....insecure. I mean come on. Think about it. Why would someone want to check another person? Well there are a few of them...

1. Check their Job.
2. Check their level. (maybe to see if they either need help or
if they can possibly give the person checking some help...
like maybe a quick cure or something.) This applies to #1
and #2.
3. Check out the cool looking armour. This is very much the
case for me seeing as how I would not only like to maybe get
my mnk up to lvl 75 but maybe a couple other jobs up there as
well. And just like sakitumi said i wanna see what i have to
look forward to.
4. Check our their Bazaar. If they get ticked at you for that
then they really need to grow up.
5. Check to make sure that they have good enough gear in a pt.
This not only shouldn't be frowned upon but almost a
requirement. Since a PT is a team effort then if one person
in the PT isn't up to par with the rest of the team then
they COULD possibly become a liability to the team.

People, even the Japanese, really need to get over the whole "Oh my god! My totally ficticious (sp?) made up cartoon character is being looked at by another totally ficticious cartoon animated character! How vulgar!" crap and just deal with it.
Its gonna happen no matter what. Hell the aren't even checking out the person just the gear. Since I still consider myself somewhat of a noobie I will probrably still continue to look at what other people have on for a little while longer. If anything to at least famialarize myself with the gear.

Just my 2 cents.

am i the only one who checks people just to see what LS they are in? lol i haven't seen anyone ever mention that when they give examples.

Upon speaking with my linkshell friends, I have discovered that the japanese translation of "examines you" in the game is "looks up and down at you, your every strength and weakness" so it may be taken by insult from some players...

I only do that to people that I know / am in another linkshell with and am curious to see what the different color is for.

I'm not really too big on what's a "famous" or "popular" linkshell, so I usually don't end up even paying attention to that part.

I mostly check for bazaars only.

I never examine anyone unless I'm actually interested in what they're bazaaring (which is all the time since I like to craft).

I usually don't mind being examined, but if the same person does it repeatedly I sometimes get ticked off. I can name a bunch of people that examine me every time they see me, which gets annoying.

I guess if you like the attention I can see how one wouldn't mind, but I mind. Many times I'll go naked if I just wanna craft and do my own business, but somehow still get examined.

I guess this is a rant of my own. I apologize, I just get mad at the little things.

LOL this is the funniest thread I have ever read. To think that such a trivial thing could harbor such arguments... I mean people dug really deep on this thing, taking everything into consideration from as far back as World War II. Crazy, yet fun!

I could care less if people check me or not, if someone wants to be bothered by it I suppose that is their choice to make (after all anytime you let something annoy you it IS a choice you make to be annoyed by it)

Now Ace, as far as some Japanese people hating us... We dropped a pair of atomic bombs on them. They were defeated. They had few Navy vessels left, their Air Force was a shambles. They had lost and they knew it AND we knew it. America dropped those bombs as a show of force and the people of Japan paid the price for several generations. What they did was an act of war, what we did was an atrocity. We had a new toy and had to see what it could do... and two very large cities full of innocent non-combatants found out. A lot of people feel this deep hatred of the people that ran planes into the two towers on 9-11... imagine they had destroyed two entire cities instead. You may offer the point that we were in a war and that the 9-11 bombings were just an act of terrorism. Those people feel like they are in a war with all that we believe in. What we did was no different than those who committed the acts of 9-11... we dropped two massive bombs on a scale the world had never seen... to put the fear of god into everyone (terror=fear?) and it worked.

As fun as it is to write about something that serious... lets face it. What this thread is about has nothing to do with any of that ^^ if you want to talk military history make a thread about why Japanese players dont like NA players and then we can talk philosophy all day long.

If someone checks you... oh well guess what there is nothing you can do to stop them so quit crying over spilled milk and whining over something you havent the power to change. Youre just wasting time and energy you could devote to something useful and that is the truth.

I think some ppl get upset because there are certain players in the game that love to talk s**t about other ppl just because theire eq isn't completely up-to-date. It's bad enough having to keep up w/ what everyone else has in RL, you shouldn't have to do it here too.
