honestly why do some people get mad when you examine them? it first began when i was in the dunes, and someone ASKED me to check my EQ. i was confused and said "uh...sure i dont see why not". some players even go as far as to change eq right in the middle of looking. i even had one war/nin i once checked in jeuno, then checked a second time because i didnt see something at first. i immediately receive the /tell:

Him: Why did you examine me twice?
Me: Um...because i wanted to see your equips and i didnt quite notice something the first time
Him: It's rude
Me: Um, how is it rude?
Him: It's rude to check other people

at this point i ignored him. my LS leader even said some people get mad when you check them when they have a BAZAAR up! what the heck? these people are hypocrites, because they cannot tell me that at ANY time while playing they have NEVER checked someone. it's BS, because at any one time they will have PTed with some one who used low-level looking gear (carapace armor, anyone?) just to see if they were gimped. let me compare this to real-life if someone wants to know:

Scenario #1:
You go to the Mall. Your party consists of 6 friends, each with a unique job. You walk into Shopping Zone.
"Wal-mart camp spot located."
Party moves to point E-6. Everyone in the party is lv 17, wearing full cotton, logoed EQ. One person is wearing rags.
You examine Raggedy Andy.
Andy >> WTF YUU N00B1!!11 WAI YUU CHEK MEE!?!1
You >> You're equipment seems out of date. Might i suggest cotton?
Andy >> STFU N00B DNT ECKSAMMIN MEE!!1!!!WTF!1!!

Scenario #2:
You walk into the car shop. Being an aspiring mechanic, you notice, coincidentally, that the person in charge is a *gasp* mechanic! You begin to examine him, noticing his dual wielding Worker Hammer +1 and a Screwdriver +2. You didn't quite catch his tool belt, so you check him again.

Mechanic >> What the hell, why did you examine me?
You >> Well, i was curious and I didn't quite notice your toll belt when i checked the first time.
Mechanic >> WTF thats rude
You >> How?
Mechanic >> It's rude to check others.

its not like you are checkin every single item he has in his pockets. someone explain to me why its rude, because he never answered my question

Someone posted a similar topic before, but i can't remember where i saw it.
Basically it started with Japanese. They don't like being examined. We all thought it's a racist thing. But in fact the english version uses the word "Examines somebody". Japanese version actually says someone "looks up and down at you" (or something like that) So it just doesn't sound very polite in Japanese. That's why people got the idea that Checking people is rude.

yea it use to be that it was only japanese players that got offended by it, because over there the majority of them think it's rude. But now it seems like there are more NA players that think it's rude too, but I don't really see how its rude. I check a lot of people i see, not for their equip to see if they are crappy or not, i check which LS they are in. I like to know the people who are around me. I think i have only examined someone once just to look at their equip and that was like 8 months ago lol.

i got chekcs now and then when i first started to play and i get more now since i have my advanced job and all, it doenst bothers me and i have to say i like looking at others and see what uber equip. the have and say to myself " god, one day i'll have this and that and i'll be uber strong too" its part of the game.

I dont know why others my get offended but lemme just say this: why dont they just filter it, its an option you can use and that's my opinion on the matter.

Thedodger's right on this one. Square didn't put checking in the game to be used to **** players off, and if it really was a matter of how the JP version emoted it, I'm surprised they haven't fixed it. Either way, people need to keep in mind that its only an insult until you take it that way.. for now just filter it out and stop taking out your insecurities on the other players.

This has to be the most pointless thing in game people get mad about. I have a friend who gets mad about it and with chat filter there is not a point at getting angry. As mentioned before hand this started with the JP players who don't like it becouse they use the look up in down as a sort of come on line in game from what one post read. I think some poeple get angry about it becouse they think anything a JP player does is the next best thing to godlyness and don't understand the principle behind it. The most often time I check people now though is when another person of the same job as me is in the same area becouse I like to know what my competition is wearing armor wise :-).

Lol, love those real world examples! ;p
I get examined all the time while fishing, it doesn't bother me at all. By examining others I have seen many equipment combinations that I may have overlooked before. However, due to the backlash from players, I try to limit my examining to people within my LS, or people who examine me.

its like we're not allowed to see the equipment they have. i mean, i can see it on your character, but i dont always know what its called. obviously if my main is gonna be war, dont you think it might be helpful to check out other wars? i cant help but laugh now, cause everytime someone checks me my brother says in a mocking tone, "OMG WTF NO CHEKS ITZ RUUDE!!1!!"

I personally like the attention. Makes me feel like a cadaver in a Med school's lab. ^^

In all seriousness, it doesn't bother me when people examine me. However, I try not to examine others as I'm still a newbie and am in /fright mode or something.

Judging from this thread it seems pretty safe to say that nearly 95% of all the NA players that are offended by checking are only offended because the JP tell them to be, lol.

Ever gone into jueno and made a /em examines you. macro. drives a few peeps a little crazy. Its only drawback is its not trandlated into Japanese >< lol
#15 Aug 23 2004 at 3:27 AM Rating: Decent
I know checking people out is considered offensive to some, but I really don't get it. Even if it is a problem with the JP translation of the emote, there still is the option to filter out examinations, as you've all pointed out. I dunno. I kind of like when I get /checked, and I laugh when people do double-takes.

I do try to avoid examining people like crazy, especially JP players.

yeah I heard with the japanese translation it's similar to hitting on them, or something of the sort. (like, hey baby, I'm checkin ya out. *big cheesy grin combined with a thumbs up*)

When I first started, I didn't know what the whole examine thing was, and I didn't really see it as offensive so I checked pretty much anybody who walked by out of curiosity (mostly just to look at levels). I've learned to just to a /sea nickname for that now.

Now, I'll /check folks who are near a town (gustaberg, ronafure, saratabaruta, etc) to see if a person is worth throwing out a cure or protect. (a level 50 person farming isn't worth giving a cure, whereas a level 2 blm who is almost dead is) I figure if I'm helping them out they shouldn't mind a random /check.

I do feel odd if somebody does a random /check a few times though. If they're actually looking at my equipment it's one thing, but to see someone examining me a few times is rather confusing (what about my information is causing you to look at me so many times?)...although it makes me laugh when I realize that someone is doing /em examines you. and just spamming that until there's about 5 people asking them wtf is going on.

For me i just deal with all the random/unsolicited examines by doing the following...

/em "examines" you.

This usually gets people to stop.

Try wearing dark AF and walk through a starting city or the dunes. I get the ole' double check a lot and than the occasional "Your rich, can I have 10k for _______" or "Wow, your good, can you help me" Of course I just blist any/all beggars unless they have a damn good reason. I can only imagine how bad it would be for a DRG or RDM...

/em takes off his gear and goes anon

but honestly the checking and questioning is all good, because when your new your curious about high level stuff, and you want to see what you have to look forward to. Its the begging that bothers me.

Also, examining is very useful in ballista to see how many petra players have and if they have "GB status" or not.

Guy: Why did you examine me?
Me: Cause I Envy your sniper rings, you should be proud
Guy: IT'S VERY RUDE TO EXAMINE PEOPLE
Me: really now?
Guy: YES
Me: well I quite frankly dont care what you think
Guy: !!
Me: I'm not obliged to listen to you anymore, good day :D
Guy: I'm calling a GM!

Yes it's very stupid....the fact people get mad about people using a feature put in the game. It's in the game to be used...not to **** people off.

Ok guys, check out this situation i had yesterday. Let me set the scene:

Here's Grimshady, a naked 58 White Mage, getting his Woodworking skill up to 60 at the guild in North San d'Oria. As I'm crafting away, I see this line on my screen:

Aaaaa (yes, his real name) lost a Black Ink.
Aaaaa lost 2 Bast Parchment.
Aaaaa motions angrily.
- he's making Shihei, btw, for ninjas. I've made tons -
/tell Aaaaa trade me man, i'll hook you up with a few extra items i have for free.
/tell <me> !!!!
/tell Aaaaa what? lol dude, just trade for free stuff. i have like 2 of each of those items left.
/tell <me> (japanese words, which i don't understand)
/tell Aaaaa (japanese)? (hmmm) <=== (trade) (woodworking) (item) (no money!)
/tell <me> More japanese words, but it seems angry.
/em examines Aaaaa.
/tell <me> Do not see!!
/em examines Aaaaa.
/tell <me> Last time~ Do not see me!!!!
/em examines Aaaaa.
/tell <me> I call GM. No more!
/tell Aaaaa (/laugh) ok punk, last effort.... listen up!
/tell Aaaaa (ninja) (magic) (item) 0 (money) (trade) (woodworking) (item) (please)
Alucard slaps Grimshady.
- i was like, whoa, who's this OTHER taru slapping me?? -
/say What's your problem, little dude?
Alucard: /say No check Aaaaa. Call GM! (bunch of japanese words)
/em examines Alucard.
/em examines Alucard.
/em examines Alucard.
Alucard: /tell <me> !!!!!!! No More!!!! Leave now!

At this point, i started laughing histarically, since it started out with me OFFERING free crafting items i had left over to someone who lost everything in a failed synth. I did my best to use the translator for him, also. BUT, when they took offense to me (/examine)ing them, lol it was On Like Donkey Kong!

guys, don't get upset at stuff japanese get upset at. at least not JUST because they are japanese. would you idolize them OUTSIDE the game? No, of course not. but you've let the game literally take over your life, it IS your life. therefore, you will ALWAYS look up to them. Keep in mind, behind every computer in Japan is another kid skipping out on school, chores, work and his friends. Yes, just like the FFXI disclaimer. They have no lives outside FFXI, that's WHY they have 4 different level 75 characters, uber equipment/gil, and level 3609238907890 crafting in all guilds. Just think before you idolize.

I noticed someone said that examining is the dumbest thing they have heard that is rude in the game. I was standing in Jeuno seeking a party, had just got lvl 49 and bout my Dark some new armor. Someone sends me a tell.

"take off you Helm"
"Why do you want me to?"
"Dont you know it is rude to wear your Helm in town, you noob"

Yeah, well I love this game and all, but nonetheless, its still a game. Give me a break acting like I'm at the dinner table praying with my hat on or something. Some people need to realize there is a world outside FFXI.
