he's the Jar Jar Binks of the series, in the book and on the television.

Readers like him. When he inevitably becomes super warrior wizard who figures out the way to stop whatever the punchline of the next book is, he'll be beloved.

I haven't read Harry Potter, but I gather he's kinda the Neville of GoT. So the expected thing would be for him to make the great big motivational speech that rouses everyone's spirits when they're on the brink of defeat. Maybe takes some sort of low-atheticism action that ends up partially saving the day, so that everyone can say, "Yeah, Jon Snow killed the fire demon with his magic sword. But he wouldn't have been able to do it without Sam figuring out that human tears made him mortal."

That, or GRRM has a were-boar eviscerate him. W/e.

Nope. His obvious character arc is to go the Citidel, learn some great secret, and use it to save the world. Possibly bumblingly, but all the same. "I was looking for Mageor's recepie for bacon soda and I found this passage about dragons!"

NO-ONE is the Jar-Jar Binks of books or TV. Jar-Jar Binks is uniquely utterly intolerable.

I loved this weeks episode, but it wasn't stupendously amazing so I'd give it an 8/10. I seem to be a lot more easily pleased than you ...lot. I DID watch an episode of Blue Bloods just before hand, which is cringingly simple, simplistic and shallow in comparison to GoT. It seems I am a very: "It's not the destination, it's the journey" viewer. Although I love explosions and action set pieces, I'm just as happy to watch Meera and Osha skinning rabbits and squabbling for seasons on end. It makes me aesthetically and psychologically pleased.

The biggest strength the show has is its biggest weakness. The complexity (size) of the story and cast. GRRM set out to write a story that specifically couldn't be done with television scripts. Other people get bored by some of the threads, and once they've decided a thread is worthless, they justifiably get upset that time is taken away from the threads they are interested in. Because time constraints pare each thread to the bare minimum. Ok, I'm not saying anything everyone doesn't already know. It's just that so far, I haven't been uninterested in any of the GoT scenes, ever. Less interested in some than others. Upset a scene has ended, grossed out, a bit upset or unsettled, but never ever uninterested in a scene. I've always taken away the expostion from even the sexposition scenes. Except for the Pod-in-the-brothel scene, where I was mostly interested in the scenery, and laughing over the "Meerenese Knot".

Edit: Don't read this post if you haven't seen episode 6.

I gotta give it to the writers. Every episode of every season makes me want to beat the everliving sh*t out of Joffrey. Like, seriously... pummel him to death with crystal paperweight or something. Can't believe he killed Little Finger's secretary (can't believe Little Finger had her killed). She was all kinds of hot.

Haven't read the books, so I can't make comparisons, but I really like how they're turning Jaime's character around (I know this duality is a thing in the books as well). Instead of him being the classic self-serving @#%^, it turns out there's another side to him.

The gore seems a bit different this season. Season 1 and 2 mostly had the occasional beheading and gutting. This season it's all about the sudden and in your face torture sh*t. The scene where Joffrey has pinned aforementioned chick to the bedpost... brutal. The scene where Jaime lost his hand was so blunt, it knocked the wind out of me. The way he just stared at his hand and then pulled away the stump. And the scene where Theon had his finger sliced and stabbed and squeezed to a pulp... ugh. It's almost too much and I hope they tone it down a bit. I'm not squeamish, but it's as if they're trying to sell it on the gore and nudity now.

I don't mind a mature show, but that torture scene was like something straight out of Hostel or Saw.

Edit2: Dammit, I have issues with Theon and Ygritte's dialects. They sound like they belong in Eastenders. Rose Leslie is hot as hell, but damn, that character's dialect (or accent?) is a terrible turn-off.

Maybe I've been desensitized by Spartacus, but this season's been quite mild. While the gore may have been a bit surprising, they are few and far in between. And as far as nudity... maybe three of the episodes featured some. I think things had been toned down a bit.

The actor who plays Theon (Alfie Allen, younger brother of the singer Lily Allen and son to actor Kieth Allen) is actually from the south of England. He's from London, iirc. I think he does a pretty good job with the accent, considering he's supposed to sound Northern.

Rose actually has to sound a little more Southern than she usually does, what with being actually Scottish and all Smiley: wink

Goodness gracious, enough of the Theon torture, marital whining, and emo Arya. Also, after episode 7 I'll echo Mazra's complaint; this week's T&A made up for the relative lack in the rest of the season.

Still seems like GoT is in a holding pattern right now. Can we please get to a wedding or two? The last two episodes have been pure build-up and it's not feeling like suspense: it's feeling like a slow slog. The only things I really enjoyed about episode 7 were Tywin's speech to Joffrey, and Jaime versus the Bear. The rest was pretty "meh."

I liked Dany's scene, and Jaime's dialogue with Qyburn....but that's pretty much it. Worst episode of the show, I think.

Thinking about it, I did like Qyburn and Jaime talking; Dany's scene wasn't bad, but wasn't amazing either (I liked it, but again - more build-up).

Takes a genius to figure out that you have to climb a tower to get to a meeting held inside a tower. Good thing he understood that.

On a semi-related note. I don't know how many of you people may actually care, but I found out this morning from Reddit that the actress that plays Shae apparently did some hardcore pornography before Game of Thrones. I had to watch a video for educational purposes.

Yeah that was a huge thing in the media here in Germany when she had her breakthrough as an actress I think in 2004 or 2005. Someone discovered she'd had had another career as a pornactress and pretty much ruined her family life. At least for the time being. I have no idea how that turned out in recent years.

I'm a little surprised at this. As a prudish American, I've always heard that the EU is a land of sexual liberation where no gives a fig about your exploits. It's kinda sad to hear that the revelation of her former career was so hard on her Smiley: frown

As far as I know the problem she faced was twofold. While I do believe many people here didn't give a flying **** about the whole thing, thanks to sensationalism it got blown completely out of proportion and got covered in almost every magazine. What made matters worse for her personally is her family background. Her parents are of turkish descent and were not amused. At least in the time directly after this story got released they broke of contact with her completely.

I'm sorely disappointed in the actor playing Daario. He's a stinkin pretty boy!

I liked the Sansa & Tyrion moments though. Sansa actually smiled. Likewise, the Hound and Arya on the horse scene. Maybe it's just watching the interaction and facial expressions of the actors but the relationship seems much more complex with the viewing.

I was ranting and raving about this last night, much to the wife's chagrin.

Eske: "HE'S SUPPOSED TO HAVE A FORKED BEARD. I DIDN'T READ 18 PAGES OF EFFUSIVE PRAISE FOR HIS FORKED BEARD FOR HIM TO NOT HAVE A FORKED BEARD ON THE SHOW."

Mrs. Eske: "Shut up, beards are gross."

EDIT: More on Daario, from Greenwald:

Andy Greenwald wrote:
Daario Naharis is a total Surfer Bro. He claims he's from the Free Cities but come on: This dude is from San Diego! "I'm the simplest man you'll ever meet" isn't something a warrior says; it's what the guy in the baja tells you before offering to take you to the best burrito shop in town. "I only do what I want to do," he tells Dany, between bites of "killer" guacamole.

Ditto on the Hound/Arya parts. I think I found the Tyrion/Sansa bit a little too awkward to fully enjoy, though I suppose that's largely the point.

I like how the White Walker that attacked Sam/Whatsherface was the exact same one that stared at him when they made their big entrance north of the wall at the end of last season. That guy really has a thing for Sam.

A bit of not-so-subtle foreshadowing?

The sexy bit with the red-head and Gendry - did it have any relevance? I'm thinking they can't let Gendry die, cuz that would have to be a give-away for the next book. Not sure what the deal is....

Haven't seen the episode yet, so I'll need to find out what this part was tonight... but regarding Gendry, it seems like they're going to roll him and Edric Storm, Robert's other *******, into one. Edric gets saved by Davos instead of getting burned as a sacrifice, and IIRC, gets smuggled to the Free Cities. That's likely what will happen with Gendry as well.

Of course, maybe the events in the episode totally negate that guess.

I felt so bad for Tyrion and Sansa. But at the same time, Tyrion was a hoot. The way he held up his wine glass in the druken frat boy salute killed me. Especially when Sansa decided she needed a drink in order to consumate things, haha.

Yeah. I thought that was funny, especially given her earlier statement that she only drinks when she has to. If ever there was a time...
