Have you not watched this yet? Go watch it nao. I personally recommend UTW(Chibiki). They never got around to releasing a batch so it's all single torrents right now.. but it's so worth it. It's 25 episodes long, and I liked every episode.

It's touching, it's got lots of singing, the characters are lovable, etc. Halfway through the series picks up some nice pace and there starts to be lots of songs. About ~80% in I bawwed for a bit. Not clannad train ride levels of baww.. but it was definitely worthy of tears.

Does it have fights? Are they magic fights? Do the characters hover in the air and concentrate and then hurl magic energy?

Closest you get to that is one of the idols in a magical girl costume. Fights are on an emotional level. The dancing is enough action for me. :3

I couldn't finish episode 1, maybe I need to try episode 2 just to validate my opinion.

You need to watch 1-13 before you're allowed to have an opinion. :p Dropping shows is silly. To date the only thing I regret watching is Saikano.
