Already mentioned, but worth mentioning again- Asimov's Foundation series. First read it as an early teen. Re-read it many times since, but haven't picked it up in many years. Strange, that a book about the future could have a profound effect on a kid that never thought further than the day's end, but it did. Couldn't get my hands on enough sci-fi after that. I guess the possibility of what could happen in the future replaced what might have happened in the past, which fantasy books like Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia felt like to me.

Come to think of it, we read Martian Chronicles in seventh grade. I guess that was the first, but not nearly the impact that Foundation had. Does homework count? =)

My favorite new(er) authors that have helped stave off the wait for GRRMs latest
Elizabeth Haydon (even her kiddie series lol)
Patrick Rothfuss
& Brandon Sanderson

Just finished Rothfuss' 'The Name of the Wind'. Enjoyed the style and story immensely.

The first book that made me love Science Fiction would be Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein.
I read a couple before that, and all they did was whet my appetite, and give me a sense of "there might be something great in what I'm reading". Troopers blew my mind.

IMO, one of the best books ever written, if not THE best book ever written.

Wow I was just going to agree with the Starship troopers vote as well. I am in my "late-teens" and I haven't read a fantasy or sci-fi book as interesting as that one.

The concept of the future in that book just grips me, and I have read a lot of political books ie. 1984 and such. I am thinking of reading the cat who walks through walls as I have heard it is good as well.

I'm pretty sure it was the original Dragonlance trilogy. Right after those I read the Elric saga, and I was hooked for life.
