The Gunslinger is iconic and nearly perfect, every book after it, in the series, is verbal diarrhea.

I had some fun reading the first three books in the series, but you're right in that the majority is absolute wretched refuse. Some of the worst books I have ever read in my life. I actually was a Stephen King fan. The Stand and The Dark Tower changed that. Those books are just straight up bloated ************ nonsense.

Is there a boxed set available yet? I read the first two, missed three, and didn't want to continue until I'd read it. Now I can't find it. Smiley: mad

There's an "unboxed set" in paperback on Amazon I believe. It includes all the books supposedly.

I liked the first several, after he got hit by the van the rest seemed forced. I still enjoyed it, and I think I'm one of the few who liked the ending (although the final "battle" with the crimson king was rather anti-clamactic).

I also picked up the comics, they just finished number 7 and there was a note in there about new issues being available in the spring IIRC. I'm not sure what those will pertain too, as the whole Wizard and Glass was covered in the 7 comics. I'm hoping it covers some of the backstory never told by King, like the events leading up to and including Jericho Hill. As for the quality of those, I don't think it was as much about the story as it was in introducing it to a different audience, and the artwork was pretty sweet in my opinion.

Actually, I agree with Kakar. The ending was the only one that would work imo. It fits, even if what happens before it isn't very good.

I agree not every story needs a happy ending.....I guessed the ending 1/2 way thru the last book and spent the last 1/2 of the book hopeing I was wrong.

I see how it fits, but I think King could of gone in another direction with it.

I liked it too, actually. But I also liked all of it, the entire series. The ending might not have been happy, or original (he's used similar themes before) but it did seem to fit.

I didnt like the ending. I know it prolly couldn't have been any better, and I dont think I should put spoilers, but its different than how it started. I suppose it should be going by what happened and how long it happened over, but after book 4 it sorta went downhill.

I read 1-7 in about a month. I'm crazy I know.

I happened to love the ending. I thought it fit perfectly, and I couldn't think of a better one.

I'm tellin' ya man, Cell was friggin' sweet...

And despite the horrid movie they made out of Dreamcatcher, the book was pretty good good. The shit weasels were much scarier in my imagination, heh.

Cell was okay, I thought it ended crappy...but typical for King.

Dreamcatcher movie was a god damn abomination. I can't believe what they did to the ending! Absolutely horrible. The book was good though.

Before I read the DT series, Insomnia was my absolute favorite. I wasn't even going to read DT cuz I was all like "7 books? That'll take damn near forever!" but my boss kinda pestered me into it and I'm glad he did! <3 <3 <3

I thought the ending to Cell was good. Can't always have a nice tidy conclusion.

Man, who's read IT? That book is freaking huge, but I found myself really immersed in it. I was surprised when I finished The Stand and IT back to back since they're such huge books.

Book one (Original) - Great.
Book two - enjoyable.
Book three - written by formula, weak.
Book four - He has realised his mistake with the last couple and written the best book of the series.
Book five - The jury is still out on this one.
Book six - more like book five part two, while not good, it wasn't bad.

Book Seven.

I agree that the final battle was a bit of a let down and that the ending was about the only thing that would fit. (personaly I liked the end) *******'s death was very well done, I couldn't beleave it at first and had to reread the end of the gunfight just to be sure.

However...... as much as I enjoyed seeing the story to the end, the reasons I have only given the last three books a single reading are A: Book four was simply the best one and B: Book seven is the SINGLE BIGGEST PEICE OF EGO STROKING THAT I HAVE EVER READ. I MEAN, COME ON!!

No spoliers, sorry, you will have to suffer through it for yourself.

Over all Verdict: Worth reading.

Oh wow.. you're reading the 'add ons' to The Dark Tower and you haven't read Hearts in Atlantis or Insomnia yet?!? Run out right now and get them! ;)

I didn't like King much (due to mostly crappy TV movies of his books), but read the Stand and it quickly became a favorite. A lot of people suggested the Dark Tower so I picked it up and fell in love with it. Then I just had to read the off shoots as well... Loved all of these as well!

Hearts in Atlantis is a collection of short stories that all tie in to one another. The first story in the book is called 'Low men in yellow coats' and involves a character from book 7 of the DT series. The movie 'Hearts in Atlantis' is actually based off this one story in the book (and has nothing to do with the story in the book actually called Hearts in Atlantis!) and does a VERY good job of doing the book justice.

Insomnia was very nice as well. It's mostly about a man who can't sleep (duh!) and who because of this starts to see things... The tie-in is very neat and also ties into someone from book 7 (different person though :).

Definately check them out!

I'm halfway through book four right now

Stop reading now. Really. Anything you can imagine will be better than the Stephen King back catalog advertisement the rest of the books are. You've been warned.

I worked my way through The Gunslinger, but the book seemed a little too deep and poetic, like he's contemplating life, death and everything inbetween while still trying to unfold a thrilling story.

Meh, I'll have to see how the second one is.

I'm a King fan, though. The first one I read was Insomnia and it's still one of my favorites. Then I read Bag of Bones and it's also one of those books I'll pull out on a rainy Sunday. Latest one I read was Cell, which was nice, although very apocalyptic.

Only thing I don't really like about King's style is how he's determined to kill at least one of the good guys in a gruesome way, describing the events in details.

The second one is very different from the first one, it's a huge difference. I really advice it though, it's a good one, up to book 4. Book 5 is something else, I doubt I'll ever reread that one.

I never really got into his whole "all my books are tied into this series" myself though. His older work, where the references are merely there because he used some characters of those books in the Dark Tower series, are luckily not influenced by it. But a book like "Black House" was just dreadful to read, the same with "Hearts in Atlantis" (although to be fair only the first story, the others were quite good imo), "Hearts in Atlantis" was the last movie I rented on VHS, thankfully as it is perfectly possible to fast forward it and keep the subtitles. I think I've seen the movie in about 10 minutes and I even regret losing that much time on it.

I read the whole thing, I loved the ties to Watership Down, the first one is actually very subtle. In the Gunslinger it says Roland killed two rabbits at 'silflay' right then I just started shouting about Watership Down. My family thought I snapped.

I had talked to some people about the ending(we had all read it) and I disagree with them about what it meant. I won't say my position because it would be a spoiler, but I'll say that you understand it everytime someone reads and REreads the series.
