No, really, she dosent.

Now I regard my english class as a complete and utter waste of my time (Anyone who insists on pointing out the spelling errors in this post can suck my ****) Im in a tech school, my major requires the smallest degree of english skills, yes some, but not anything that I would have to learn good debating skills over (That is what the class in question is over)

Now do not take this as a indication that I am slacking off in said class (Actually I need to get my GPA up as it is hovering dangerously low at 3.02 (I drop below 3.0 and bad things happen) So everything I hand in is of the utmost quality. And yet, I continuly get poor marks, nothing major, im just used to getting my usuall A's on all my stuff, and these weird symbols that resemble B's keep apearing on my work.

So I decided to test my theory, the control subject is Anthony, Anthony is a nice guy, very friendly, chatty, pretty cool guy all around, I like Anthony, English is Anthony's second language (Spanish being his first) he also thinks English in a drafting school is a complete waste of his energies, needless to say he dosent give a ****.

Now a opportunity arrises that I take advantage of, the assinment "Write a persuasive paper arguing/defending Bush's stance on stem cell research" this is a subject I care much about, as I am one of those people who stands to directly benifit from said research. I have spent many an hour researching this paper on my own time. So I begin writting, I write an excellent paper, I spent probibly 24 hours writting a paper that should have been completed in less then 2.

So I finish, I hand it in expecting my sure thing A, I recieve a B+ ARGH, *****!!

Now we flash back to my control subject, I happen to know Anthony wrote his entire paper in a half hour period between classes. Anthony for his efforts recieves a B-. WTF! The paper was worth a D, a quick glance could reveal countless number of spelling errors, run on sentances, and just a bad use of grammer.

Now let me ask you, why in such a world is a slacker like Anthony allowed to recieve what is basicly the same grade as me. While I, the pinacle of acheivment, am insulted with such a slap in the face grade?

We are to draw 3 conclusions from this.

1. Anthony is sleeping with the teacher.
2. My teacher is a bigot and dosent want to see any person in a wheelchair succede in life.
3. My english poor.

I am inclined to belive option 2, as it makes me apear in the best light.

I know you are all in agreance because obviously im perfect.

Allow me to be the first to laugh at you because you just wasted 5 minutes of your life reading the ramblings of a bored insomniac.

Actually it only took about a minute to read. Sorry. I'll read it slower next time if you like.

One thing I learned from college, is that there are just some teachers out there who are complete ********. For example, some teachers jut flat out won't give anyone an A, as their personal protest against "grade inflation". Of course they don't seem to realize that it only screws over their students in relation to everyone else. Other teachers grade by initial impressions alone, or by whether they like you or not. I've had some teachers that will only give you high marks if you are willing to argue points with them in class, I've had others that will mark you down if you dare question them. Usually the latter are the ones that are completely full of ****.

You have either two choices. Suck it up and go talk to them, do the whole "I need to get an A, what can I do to improve this paper blah blah blah" route, or you cna just ignore her, maybe run over her foot a few times in passing.

Who knows, maybe she is grading you down because she wants you to come in her office so she can get you alone...

reading the aimless drivel of a bored insomniac could never be considered a waste of time, since it reminds us just how sane we atually are. The only time it becomes a problems is when you begin to understand and relate to said Bored insomniac.

I completely relate to the above post and i am going to place the blame Firmly at the feet of my 5 day old son <since he can't object yet> Smiley: grin

My chemistry teacher at Collage seemed to be put on the planet solely to make me fail my course, i tested the theory by letting my friend do one of the pieces of coursework while i did his and his work got an 'A' while mine a 'C', it was kinda nice to see that my thoery worked, especially since my parents where in on it and got me a class move soon after.

Not that it mattered since i ended up joining the Royal Navy <thats the british guy's Smiley: wink> anyway and ave never used an iota of what he taught me.

hmmmm On second thought i am not going to blame my son he is too young for that responciblity so i think i will blame Smash instead as he seems to be a fault for everything else Smiley: jester

I'm inclined to believe this is the case. I had a government professor that did the same, but he allowed re-writes. All he wanted was for you to go "discuss" the paper, and he would allow re-writes within 2 class periods. Most times he would up the grade. Some professors just want a certain style, or feel that a paper is incomplete, if, for example, you don't address both sides of an issue.

And Kao's right, ^it didn't take long to read.

Had an English teacher in college that refused to give an A unless you were a published author. I considered submitting one of those letters to Penthouse Forum just to see if she'd take that...

I agree with Kao though, you should talk to her. And if that doesn't work, run her over repeatedly.

I am an English teacher and I strongly urge you to talk with your instructor. He/she knows that all marking and grading must be 100% accountable and they must be able to explain marks given. Talk to your prof...get the real story. You never know, the mark could get changed.

I couldn't disagree with this more. English, although it may not be fun for you, is extremely important in everyday life, not to mention academically. Posting on this board is as good an indication as any that if you do not know how to express yourself well, you will be judged and categorized (and I am not speaking solely about you, Mrens, just persons in general). That is the way things go in society. Spelling ability and written expression will get you further in life than you might expect. A well-crafted cover letter might get you that job and debate skills might get you that refund...and on and on.

Just food for thought.

Everyone else pretty much covered it. Getting good grades in school is just as much about figuring out what the instructor wants from you as mastering the subject. Actually, you'd be surprised just how much this is like a real work environment. Despite whatever title you may hold in your job, your real job is to make your boss happy (presumably with your work, but if you can work out other arrangements, that's up to you I guess). Figuring out what your boss expects from you and doing it is a huge key to success.

I also want to totally second what Taredoru said. Language skills are huge, even in a technical environment (heck. Especially in a tech enviroment). In today's business world, most of your communication will be done via email. Being able to write coherently and get others to understand what you're trying to say is a very valuable work skill. No matter how technical your job is, at some point in your report chain, there's going to be someone who has no idea what all that technogarble means, but will want someone to explain to him why <something important> happened, or needs to happen.

Email has an amusing permanence to it as well. Folks forward email. They reply to it. A mail you sent out 2 months ago may just appear stuck in a stack of forwards that later gets sent out to your entire department for some reason or other. Looking like a chump to the folks who pay you is a really bad idea...

I had an Egnlish teacher that refused to give me any grade at all, because I scored to high in a multiple choice test.

Okay, this is going back a few years, and I dont know if you ever had the same sort of tests, basically I think they were designed to test your comprehnsion of a given text. How well you understood it, or what wrong conclusions you may have jumped to.

Well, as we all know, even in English there is logic. In interpreting a page of text to understand it there is even more logic. My kind of test. Well I scored 20 out of 20 for said test. She however refused to give me any grade at all, on the grounds that I MUST have cheated.

I have to say that twenty plus years down the line, that still sticks in my throat. It was unjust and unfair, okay so I was new to her class (and arrived there because I may just have been a tad disruptive elsewhere), but when all is said and done she judged what she percieved to be the person, or rather what she percieved that person to be, rather than the work produced.

It happens, it happens constantly and in one way or another throughtout your life you will always meet prejudice one way or another, black or white, male or female, in a sooped up wheelchair or on two legs.

All you can do is just keep at it, write the prejudiced pre-juding bastages you may meet along the way off as a waste of space - they are. Don't allow them to make you bitter or change the way you are. In the end we all prove ourselves one way or another.

Believe me eventually we do.

And i'm rambling now, time to go nuke something or die in the attempt.

Good luck.

Meh.

Nobody around here likes you, Mren, so why should your english teacher be any different?
