As BLM (lvl 55, 733 MPs) I'm annoyed when people try to explain to me how to manage my MPs... when the party has not even started (i.e. they have not witnessed yet how I manage them.)

There is the common misconception that Ancient Magic MB is a waste of MPs... which it is not if you know what you are doing (at least at level 50-55, it might change later on with III and IV elemental spells.)

Let's take an example with Ice based spells (since Distortion is a common MB at that level ranges and crabs a common mob, weak to ice.) Blizard II (77 MPs) MB hits for 340 when unresisted, while Freeze (307 MPs) MB hits for 1260. So to beat the Freeze damage would have to do 4 Blizard II MBs (288 MPs)... of course you won't get 4 SCs in a fight, plus you have rescast time, so you end up tossing different elemental spells and not getting as much damage... so you end up a) spending more MPs, b) taking more time to kill the mob. Of course you have to time your MB / SC so that it's just the amount of damage you need to kill the mob, not less (or you will get hurt) and not much more (or you might be wasting MPs.) But a good BLM will know when.

i think ur a little off on the freeze damage..

W/O brd help freeze MBS for 900-1000 damage
W/O brd help blizz II MBS for 250-300 damage

now WITH brd assistance

freeze mb = 1200+ threnody + etude
blizz II mb = 350-450 threnoy + etude

this is watch a fully int geared taru cast spells

in my oppinion i would rather watch a double mb Blizz II and Blizz I that a freeze.. as far as kill chain is concerned.

I cant stand blms who cant conserve mp even with a rdm and brd in pt 50 mp is still 50 mp if puller happens to bring a link and brd is unable to lullaby it..

*side note i have yet to see an "addition mage" in a rdm + brd pt with less than 50% mp lol so i dont have enough experience to know what would be the outcome of a blm having 50 mp.

I was in a PT with RDM and BRD (and I use Apple Pie +1), we got the Freeze MB 3-4 out of 5 fights and made it to c4-5 all the time. No downtime. (Chain was lost only because of the pull had to get longer.) The puller was amazing.

We only got one SC per fight, I don't think we could have had two consistently, so we couldn't have two Bliz II MBs.

I think as long as the mages are not cause for downtime or broken chains they should be left to manage their MPs and spellcasting strategy as they see fit.

That is funny! If we told Derufin to "Conserve MP" I'm pretty sure he'd let us know what was what. How in the world do people think mages made it to lvl 50+ and not know what they're doing? Granted there are a few horror stories...

Ok this is just silly. When our BLM gets his ancient magic, I'll smack if he doesn't use it. LoL.. j/k. My mages know what they're doing and I'll let them do it. IF I see something that is a little off, I'll suggest an alternate method. As long as they are getting their jobs done (and my mages are unbelievable so I don't have to worry about them) I'm happy. If they opt for one huge MB at the end of a fight, or if they prefer multiple nukes, as long as they are doing their job, I won't be complaining. I'll sit behind the mob and swing my scythe and absorb, I'll let the mages worry about the mage job. :-b
