In EQ and EQ2 there are 'hotkeys' and then there are 'macros'. Hotkeys are shortcuts used to cast spells, perform combat arts, skills like sprint, or tradeskill(crafting) actions. Macros are commands you can create to make some gameplay easier. Such as Crooks mentioned, /assist Tydral will make your character target the mob I am currently targeting. /cast 1 on the first line, /pause 30 on the second line, and /cast 2 on the third line of the macro window would cause you're character to cast a spell, then pause while your spells refresh, and then automatically cast a second spell with one press of a button.
You can make multiple hot key bars also in EQ2. The first would only require a press of a number to perform the appropriate action. The second you would press alt+the number to execute the action and a third hot key bar you would hit ctrl+the number.
You actually get 12 hotkeys per bank:
Regular Bank: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - =
Ctrl Bank: Same as above with Ctrl pressed.
Alt Bank: Same as above with Alt pressed.
