Treading grey waters with CoH's Paragon Studios

We took the time to sit down with Paragon Studios to talk about their latest expansion for City of Heroes, titled "Going Rogue." Also, we've got free jetpack codes for you all!

ZAM: What about new endgame content for Going Rogue? Are there any plans to tie in this new morality system in with City of Heroes' endgame content, either now or in the future?

Matt Miller: Our "Incarnate" endgame system is a major initiative we are working toward post-Going Rogue's launch. One of our driving goals with the Incarnate system is that it is fun. We had a preview of the system in an early beta build and while players told us they liked what they saw, they also gave us some great feedback that we thought really upped that "fun factor". Unfortunately we could not act upon this feedback and still make our release date so moving forward there will be some new twists on the end-game system that come directly from beta tester's feedback.

ZAM: Do you think this system of morality will ever find its way to the Mission Architect system? There are probably quite a few mission creators who are just drooling at the opportunity to dabble in the grey areas of the superhero psyche!

Matt Miller: A lot of our authors already do have morally gray story arcs in Mission Architect! We specifically designed MA to be as open as possible in terms of what missions you could run and we're always updating Mission Architect with new features and content so these stories will only expand. With Going Rogue, I think players will finally be able to share the story of how their hero or villain changed their destiny.

ZAM: What about the new powers coming to City of Heroes with this Going Rogue expansion. Can you tell us a little bit about these new powers and what they'll bring to the table for players? What about future powers in the works? Any hints?

Matt Miller: With the four new power sets, Dual Pistols, Demon Summoning, Electric Control and Kinetic Melee, each basic Archetype gets access to a new power set. Dual Pistols is a combination of Gun-Fu and John Woo. And as the name implies, Demon Summoning lets you summon a variety of demonic allies as well as a wicked Hellfire Whip for when things get up close. Electric Control lets you shock, stun and jolt foes with electricity as well as summon gremlins. Finally Kinetic Melee is a new fighting style that mixes Tai-chi with some Shaolin martial arts.

We really went with the players' ideas on what to make, and we're ecstatic with the end results!

As for future power sets, we have a lot of ideas brewing, but are not in a position to discuss any of them just yet.

ZAM: Going forward from Going Rogue, you must have a number of ideas you'll be pursuing for future developments. Any clues as to where you'll go from here? Will Going Rogue's morality system be further expanded and developed, or are there plans for whole new systems in City of Heroes?

Matt Miller: Going Rogue lays an excellent foundation of ideas and systems that we are absolutely going to expand upon in the future. Right now I want to see what the players gravitate to the most, what works and what doesn't, and continue to improve the game all around.

ZAM: Well, that's all the questions we have for you right now. Any last words you would like to share with all the CoH fans who are eagerly anticipating Going Rogue?

Matt Miller: Going Rogue is everything we wanted it to be. It's brand new stuff for existing players to tackle and more content than we could bring you in any single issue we've ever done. More than that, it offers something that hasn't been explored in an MMO before - moral choices that can profoundly impact your game experience and truly immerse you into the life of your character. But it's not just that. It's an excellent starting point for brand-new players and a great re-entry point for returning ones. Praetoria is a brand-new starting experience, so that "brand new MMO" feeling is there all over again in Going Rogue.

ZAM: Thanks for answering our questions, and good luck with Going Rogue!

Matt Miller: No problem, now if you don't mind, I'm going to log into Going Rogue. I've got some Heroes that have always want to see what being the bad-guy is all about!

Remember everybody, if you want to get a free jetpack code for your first days in Going Rogue, be sure to make a comment in the comment section of this interview below, saying what you're looking forward to best in Going Rogue, and we'll send you a code!

Hi all -

We're working on a solution to the free jetpack codes that were promised to our readers. The response we received was more than we anticipated, so please bear with us as we figure out how to distribute the codes. Thanks for your patience, and I hope we can get you your jetpack codes soon.

Free Jetpack Codes

So, it's been over a month since you posted 'we're working on it'- should I just assume that even though, I commented on this story within the first couple hours it was posted, that I won't be getting a code? I would think that you would be able to resolve it by now. Admittedly the article and promise of a code was what led me to your site (I'm sure that was the desired effect). But why would I or any other newcomer feel compelled to remain a member of this site when our first experience here was to be lied to? Not cool.

My reason for playing City of Heroes
# Aug 22 2010 at 12:08 PM Rating: Decent
When I heard that you could switch sides with this new expansion, I signed up for a City of Heroes account. I've been playing the game for a few days now and so far, I like what I see.
..i stupidly keep checking this site...
# Aug 19 2010 at 9:57 AM Rating: Decent
I don't know why i stupidly keep checking this site for this free code for a jet-pack. I do know this I wont trust much of anything I read on this site and other sites it is associated with. I use to value Wow-Head as good source but if this is what we have to expect from this whole network, then I may look elsewhere for honest game news and contest. Its not about the free jet-pack, its about saying you will give one and then don't, that's called integrity and you guys need to learn it.

Also if you dont intend to give a code to everyone who post, dont use this in your subtitle "......Also, we've got free jetpack codes for you all!...."
