It's Time to Get Freaky!

Allakhazam has put together an awesome beta promotion for anyone of our registered members that would like to check out the upcoming collectible battle game, Freaky Creatures! All you have to do is visit the following page and follow the simple instructions and within 24 hours you'll receive your exclusive invite to the closed beta.

The code that you receive wil also grant you access to some extra features! You'll have access to four of the creature types, instead of the two that most beta entrants receive. In addition, you'll receive double the parts with which to customize your battle hungry pet!

Remember that Freaky Creatures is not only still in beta, it's also under a closed NDA! So as much as we want to hear about how awesome the game play is, sharing is not a good idea right now. But you can enjoy the battles, customization and fun all you want!

Let's Get Freaky!

If you've been following our coverage of the summer shows you'll know I caught up with Freaky Creatures at Comic-Con and Gen Con and have been impressed with their product from day one. I'll admit when I first saw the press release regarding the new game and saw the site I was less than blown away, but after some battles and research into the game I can see this being something I play in addition to my usual MMO list!

Freaky Creatures certainly has a great take on a collectible game. From the first glance you'll see that the collectibles are sturdy, well made and impart a sense of character all their own. Each of the 10 collectibles available at launch later this year represents an incredible amount of artistry and collaboration among very talented people. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that with each detail you find that is exactly what you think it should be in this game, many people lost a lot of sleep to make it just perfect! Trust me, there are a lot of good things.

Let's not forget that while the first set of creatures is going live this fall we'll be seeing many additions to the collectibles over the lifetime of the game and new editions will also make their way to the stores. So if you're into the collectible thing it has quality figurines, and if you're like me and are not so much into collecting, the game itself is filled with mechanics and depth that will keep you hooked for a long time.

New Screens Reveal Robust Gameplay

From Abandon Interactive Entertainment :

MALIBU, Calif. - September 23, 2008 - Abandon Interactive Entertainment today released five new action-packed screenshots for the upcoming online creature building and battling game, Freaky Creatures. Swarming shelves in early 2009, Freaky Creatures combines the best of collectible action figures, trading card games, MMOs and virtual worlds. The updated screenshots demonstrate a variety of in-game elements, including creature creation, socialization and combat:

Freaky Creatures is an upcoming MMO game on a reusable USB flash drive that is bundled with collectable action figures. Players take their action figures online and build their own ultimate, customizable creature and battle against friends. The variety of parts and powers will allow players to create more than three billion visual combinations. Players can socialize and interact with the Freaky Creatures universe by building their own teams, posting leader boards and stats, and by playing mini-games.

One of the great things about smaller companies launching in the MMO world is that they're up against the giants who have what seem to be unlimited budgets and promotional opportunities, requiring nothing short of incredible ingenuity and creativity from the teams. So it was great that the first game advertisement I saw at the Gen Con show was for Freaky Creatures . It was even more incredible that, after walking the area outside the exhibit hall and gaming rooms, the contest they were running for beta keys was advertised everywhere!

Watching their exhibit hall booth traffic was even more exciting as potential players lined up to take a crack at the game. Unfortunately early Thursday the beta servers were taken offline to deal with patch issues (what can you say? It's beta!) and while many walked away disappointed for the moment, judging from the lines later in the week, most folks stopped by again to give it a shot.

One of the best reactions I heard was someone talking about how excited they were to get their kids into it, and someone standing close by said "Screw your kids, me and my buddies are dying to play!" Judging from the reactions, they've not been disappointed. The most common reaction is that parents are excited to have a game that introduces their kids to playing with others, collectibles, online play, and competition all at once. And parents are excited for a fun zero barrier to entry game with rewards for participating and games that are often as quick as five minutes each.

The folks over at Abandon Interactive Entertainment have come up with a new way to do multi-player, turn based, lobby, combat games! Sell the online game along with cute (or ferocious, consumer’s choice!) toy versions of your monster avatars, and come up with a slick website! Support the heck out of it, as any good online game should be, and you have what I think will be a huge success - Freaky Creatures.

This upcoming multi-player game has been in development more years than many of us can comprehend spending on one project. But hard work, a lot of dedicated and tenacious people, and a well thought out plan is bringing us a beta on (and maybe before) August 1st! Creative Director Matt Saia took me on a demo of the game itself, and if I was prepared to see an online version of a trading card game (which I was), I've changed my mind! This game goes much deeper, and has a level of fun built around, under, inside, and through it. The folks on this team haven't put anything into this game that doesn't add an element of enjoyment.
